First half of 2022: Austrians travel more than before the pandemic

According to preliminary data from Statistics Austria, the number of holiday trips in the first half of 2022 was slightly above the pre-crisis level. 9,77 million trips with at least one overnight stay were made. For comparison: In the first six months of 2019, there were 9,76 million trips.

Compared to the first half of 2021, the volume increased by 126,5 percent. Compared to the first half of 2020, this year was 89,7 percent higher. While in the first quarter of 1 the travel activity of the Austrian resident population was still below the pre-pandemic level - compared to the first quarter of 2022, 1% fewer vacation trips were taken (Q2019 14,1: 1 million vacation trips; Q2022 3,53: 1 million) – travel activity increased significantly in the second quarter of 2019. The number of holiday trips increased by 4,11% to 2 million compared to the second quarter of 2022 (2 million).

The number of business trips in the first half of 1 doubled compared to the same period of the previous year to 2022 million (+1,71%), but was still 106,2% below the pre-crisis level of 10,1 of 2019 million business trips.

Almost half of the holiday trips went abroad again

In the first half of 1, people living in Austria again spent almost half of their vacation trips (2022% or 46,9 million) abroad; in the first half of 4,58, just under every fourth vacation trip (1% or 2021. 24,6 million) undertaken abroad. The distribution of holiday trips in Germany and abroad largely corresponds to that of the first half of 1,06, when 1% (2019 million) of holiday trips were abroad. The most popular foreign destinations in the first half of 44,3 were Italy (4,32% of trips abroad), followed by Germany (1%) and Croatia (2022%). Long-distance travel was also in demand again, with the share of long-distance travel in the first half of 24,6 being 22,1% (first half of 9,0: 1%; first half of 2022: 6,0%).

The number of domestic holiday trips increased by 1% to 2022 million in the first half of 59,6 compared to the same period of the previous year, but was 5,19% below that of the first half of 4,5 (1 million ).

More than half of all holiday trips are made by private car

61,9% of holiday trips in the first half of 1 were made with private cars. This made the car the most common means of transport used to get there, with it being used more frequently for domestic trips (2022% of domestic vacation trips) than for foreign trips (73,8% of foreign vacation trips) (48,4: 2021% of domestic vacation trips, 83,1, 67,0% of outbound vacation trips; 2019: 77,7% of domestic vacation trips, 43,7% of outbound vacation trips). Compared to the first half of the previous year and the first half of 1, rail was able to gain shares as a means of arrival both for domestic and international holiday trips (2019: 2022% of all holiday trips; 17,1: 2021%; 11,7: 2019. 12,4%). The share of air travel abroad was 29,3% (2021: 20,6%; 2019: 37,6%).
