May: Clear round for Airbus

The European aircraft manufacturer Airbus was unable to deliver a single aircraft in May 2020, but it also did not receive any cancellations. In May 2020, Airbus delivered a total of 24 A220, A320 and A350 aircraft to customers. However, no new orders were placed in the midst of the Corona crisis. One small ray of hope, however, may be that no cancellations have been received. Net new orders are currently on the books. In May, Airbus delivered two A299-220s to Air Canada and 300 aircraft from the A18 family, including the first A320neo to WIzzair. Four A320 XWBs in the A350-350 and A900-350 configurations were made available for Airbus wide-body aircraft.

Tuifly is cutting 700 employees

Tuifly actually wanted to get back into the long-haul business in autumn 2020 and operate some routes from Düsseldorf. But that won't happen now. Job cuts, especially among flying staff, are also imminent. A spokesman for the German holiday airline confirmed that the long-haul plans have been temporarily abandoned. Due to the Corona crisis and the resulting unclear situation, this step is now considered to be pointless. But that's not all, because the fleet currently consisting of 39 Boeing 737s is to be halved. At the same time, the Bremen, Cologne/Bonn and Münster/Osnabrück locations are to be closed. Although some of them no longer have any flight operations, these airports have historically been the home base for numerous employees. According to information from the news channel NTV, 700 employees are to be laid off. There is no official confirmation of this from Tuifly. "We now expect swift negotiations from the Tuifly management," says Markus Wahl, President of the Cockpit Association. "These discussions must be conducted honestly and openly, without calculation. Neither the employees nor the company can afford to wait.” The VC is of the opinion that the start of long-haul flights is currently not possible due to the currently unclear situation in the long-haul travel market. This is hitting the flying staff particularly hard. “The Corona crisis is turning the travel industry upside down and destroying years of plans built up by companies and employees at a breathtaking speed. After the debacle surrounding Lufthansa state aid, politics now has its next test, because the TUI Group has already received billions in tax money. It must not become the norm for tax money in companies to become a threat to employees.

Dispute with the USA: China is rowing back

Less than 12 hours after the United States withdrew landing rights from four Chinese airlines, the People's Republic is rowing back and relaxing its entry regulations. From June 8, Beijing will allow foreign carriers to fly to any airport once a week. This sends a positive signal to Washington and - at least for the time being - puts an end to the dispute above the clouds. The new relaxations will be accompanied by increased security precautions, as n-tv.de reports. For example, people will have to be tested for the new Covid-19 pathogen upon arrival. In addition, further relaxations are being promised: If no corona cases occur in the next three weeks, flights will be allowed twice a week.

Air Mauritius is about to be dissolved

The Corona crisis hit many airlines like a slap in the face. While most companies are gradually recovering from this shock, the future for Air Mauritius looks anything but rosy. According to reports, the airline could slowly run out of steam. The carrier only filed for creditor protection at the end of April. At that time, the top priority was to save the company from bankruptcy. Today, however, they are far from that, as aerotelegraph.com reports. "The possibility of liquidation is becoming more and more visible," says the special administrator. The island state's national airline could be coming to an end on its 50th anniversary.

Lufthansa Group continues to expand

The airlines of the Lufthansa Group are slowly but surely waking up from their Corona sleep and continuing to expand their flight offerings. In September, 90 percent of all originally planned short- and medium-haul destinations and 70 percent of long-haul destinations are to be served again. Parent company Lufthansa alone will fly to North America more than 100 times a week in the autumn via the Frankfurt and Munich hubs. In addition, around 90 flights to Asia, over 20 to the Middle East and over 25 to Africa are planned each week. "From September, Lufthansa will offer a total of 1.800 weekly connections on short- and medium-haul routes. 102 destinations will then be served again from Frankfurt, and 88 from Munich," the statement said. Swiss also gives an outlook for the future. In the autumn, the Lufthansa subsidiary plans to fly to around 85 percent of all destinations that were served before the Corona crisis again with around a third of the capacity. This is to be done "in line with the easing of entry regulations in the respective destination countries," it said. Eurowings is also increasing its flight program for passengers and plans to fly to 80 percent of travel destinations again over the course of the summer. "After the travel warning was lifted, interest in holiday destinations such as Italy, Spain, Greece and Croatia in particular is increasing rapidly. That is why Eurowings will be bringing 30 to 40 percent of its flight capacity back into the air in July - with a focus on Düsseldorf, Hamburg, Stuttgart and Cologne/Bonn," the company said.

Wizzair Abu Dhabi doubles its fleet

The Abu Dhabi branch is scheduled to launch in October with six Airbus A321s. Originally, three aircraft were planned. Wizzair intends to launch the subsidiary in Abu Dhabi with six Airbus A321s, not three. This was announced by company boss Jozsef Varadi in a conference call. According to current planning, flight operations are scheduled to begin in October 2020. Tickets will go on sale in June 2020. The manager has not yet named any specific destinations. In any case, the destinations are to be in Africa, India, Europe and the Middle East. The European destinations from Abu Dhabi that can already be booked are operated by Wizzair Hungary and are not the "new destinations" that are eagerly awaited in the industry. The subsidiary's fleet is to be expanded rapidly. Varadi expects that up to 15 aircraft will be operated in Abu Dhabi within the next 100 years, reports the Khaleej Times portal. The Emirate of Abu Dhabi is increasingly focusing on low-cost airlines and has founded two joint ventures through holding companies: Wizzair Abu Dhabi and Air Arabia Abu Dhabi.
