USO: Ryanair and Lauda are said to have poorly cleaned cabins

For several weeks now, the Spanish trade union USO has been strongly criticizing the implementation of Spanish COVID-19 protection measures by the airlines Ryanair and Lauda. In particular, the fact that FFP2 masks are not issued to the flight crew, contrary to local legislation, has already led to complaints being made to the aviation authorities and the labor inspectorate. USO is now also criticizing the cleaning processes of the Ryanair Group, because they do not have cleaning by specialist staff between two flights. The cabins are only thoroughly cleaned and disinfected at night. From the point of view of the employee representatives, this is not enough in times of Corona. They also point to competitors who do have specialist staff clean between two flights. At Lauda and Ryanair, the cabin crew is supposed to take on this task "without cleaning agents, protective equipment and training." Since July 8, 2020, binding COVID-19 safety regulations have applied to all airlines operating from Spain, which are based on the recommendations of the EASA. According to the USO, Ryanair and Lauda are ignoring these. The employee representatives are particularly annoyed that instead of the mandatory FFP2 masks, reusable MNS masks, which were produced in China and are not approved in Europe, are now being issued to staff. There are not even replacement masks for passengers on board for a fee. In this context, the EASA recommends that airlines should have them available. However, there is no mention of these having to be free for passengers. The USO union continues to criticize the fact that, despite a complaint already submitted to the relevant authorities, in-flight sales have not been reduced. Duty-free items are still being offered.

State aid for Brussels Airlines is available

So far, Lufthansa has been able to agree on state support for itself and its subsidiaries - only Brussels Airlines has been left out. Until now: As the public broadcaster VRT reports, an agreement has been reached with the Belgian government. According to this, Brussels will receive a loan of 290 million euros from the state, which must be repaid by 2026. The condition: the financial injection must benefit the Belgian flag carrier and may not be passed on to Lufthansa or other companies of the airline. In addition, the government will receive a lien on shares in the Kranich Group. If the airline is no longer able to repay the loan, these will go to the Belgian state. In addition, Lufthansa has also committed to supporting the ailing airline's flights. An additional 170 million euros will be pumped into the company. 70 million euros of this will go towards restructuring, and the rest of the money will be used for financial consolidation. The agreement also stipulates the continued existence of the Brussels Airlines brand and the headquarters in Brussels and is awaiting final approval by both the Lufthansa board and the Belgian government. The European Commission could also put a stop to the plan.

Precautionary deletion: Airline has to pay

Occasionally, when severe weather is forecast, airlines inform their passengers the day before of the decision to cancel the flight. Bad weather is usually considered an extraordinary circumstance and exempts the airline from paying compensation. But not in this specific situation, the Berlin Regional Court ruled. The defendant airline canceled the affected flight for the following day "as a precaution" due to a severe weather forecast. Under the file number 67S49/19, the Berlin Regional Court now ruled that this was not an extraordinary circumstance because there was no corresponding warning from air traffic control. The air traffic control could have restricted air traffic, but did not do so. The court now awarded the plaintiff compensation.

Lufthansa launches “Ocean”

In the midst of the Corona crisis, Lufthansa submitted an application for AOC and OL for its new tourism project, known under the working title "Ocean". The company is to serve as a wet lease platform and bring together all tourism offers, reports CH-Aviation.com. A year ago, the Lufthansa board announced that leisure traffic was to be completely reorganized. Eurowings apparently turned out to be a financially expensive failure, as the long-haul product never became profitable. However, the new company is not to be located in the low-cost segment, but is based on the Swiss Edelweiss Air. It is currently planned that eleven aircraft will be used from Frankfurt, Munich and Düsseldorf. It can therefore be assumed that further changes are imminent at Eurowings. Within the group, the subsidiary Germanwings and the SunExpress Deutschland stake have already been disposed of. Lufthansa announced last year that the German Wings activities would be bundled in one platform. The subcontractor Luftfahrtgesellschaft Walter, which flew DHC Dash 8-400s for Eurowings before the Corona crisis, has since filed for bankruptcy.
