Ninth Boeing 777-F taken over by Lufthansa Cargo

After a 10-hour delivery flight, Lufthansa Cargo took delivery of its ninth Boeing 29-F in Frankfurt on September 2020, 777. The aircraft, registered under D-ALFI and named "Buenos días México", will in future transport up to 103 tons within the airline's cargo network. "Air freight secures important supply routes, especially in acute crises, and thus makes a fundamental contribution to the global economy. Mastering short-term global challenges is one of our core competencies, and countering long-term global challenges is our responsibility. With our new fleet, we are underlining our claim to actively and sustainably combine economic and ecological efficiency," said Peter Gerber, CEO of Lufthansa Cargo, at the handover of the "Fox India". In addition to the nine Boeing 777-Fs, Lufthansa Cargo's fleet currently includes six McDonnell Douglas MD-11Fs, which will be retired in the foreseeable future, three of them this year. Four more Boeing 777-Fs are also being marketed through a joint venture with AeroLogic. With a turnover of 2,5 billion euros and a transport performance of 8,9 billion freight tonne-kilometers in 2019, Lufthansa Cargo is one of the world's leading companies in the transport of air freight.

Swiss presents winter flight schedule

In winter, 85 percent of destinations are to be flown to - but only with 30 to 40 percent of capacity. Swiss is suffering more from the consequences of the Corona crisis than expected. This also has an impact on the winter flight schedule, which was presented today. "Due to the global development of the pandemic and the resulting travel restrictions and quarantine regulations instead of effective Corona testing procedures, our planned flight program for the coming winter is falling short of original expectations," said Swiss sales manager Tamur Goudarzi Pour. While a flight schedule of up to 50 percent was planned until a few weeks ago, the Lufthansa subsidiary has now had to cut this to around 30 to a maximum of 40 percent of the previous year, taking developments into account. Overall, the company plans to fly to around 85 percent of destinations again next winter. 67 of these from Zurich and 21 from Geneva. In the long-haul sector, Swiss will fly to Boston again in October. The city on the US coast will initially be served twice a week, and from March three times a week. Johannesburg will also be served again. Three flights per week are planned. In addition, the Zurich-Dubai route will be served three times a week from the end of October, and in the medium term Dubai will be connected from Zurich at least five times a week. Furthermore, Switzerland's flag carrier is planning three weekly flights to Los Angeles and Miami as well as to the Indian capital New Delhi from March 2021. The following long-haul destinations will also be served from Zurich: Newark, New York JFK, Chicago, San Francisco, Montreal, São Paulo, Tel Aviv, Mumbai, Bangkok, Singapore, Tokyo, Hong Kong and Shanghai. The African cities of Nairobi and Dar es Salaam will not be served in winter 2020/2021.

New: Edelweiss flies to Muscat in Oman

Edelweiss is gearing up for the autumn and winter holidays. Numerous routes are on the programme. The Swiss airline trusts in its customers' willingness to travel and offers weekly connections to the Seychelles, Cancún and Punta Cana. The classic Maldives holiday is also returning. Edelweiss has also conjured up a new route: the carrier is offering a direct flight to Muscat (Oman). However, due to the current situation, the route cannot be operated until November at the earliest, as the company announced today. In the short and medium-haul sector, the destinations Marsa Alam, Hurghada and Sharm El Sheikh are already extremely popular. The Greek islands, Italy and Kosovo are also very well booked for the coming holidays.

EU: States should intervene regionally

In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, the European Union wants to avoid border closures in the future. Comprehensive measures due to rising infection rates - such as travel warnings or even border closures - are to be avoided in the long term. This would only be at the expense of the tourism industry. And this is already weakened. Instead, the focus should be on the regional level. There are also calls for closer coordination on travel warnings, Covid-19 tests and quarantine regulations. In addition, business travel should be encouraged by eliminating quarantine regulations after negative rapid tests. Rapid tests are therefore an important building block for returning to more normality, as the news medium ORF reports. "Our goal is to limit travel restrictions to the necessary extent and to give people in Europe as much freedom to travel as possible again without neglecting health protection," it said after consultations between the EU tourism ministers.

Farewell: Berlin-Tegel opens the visitor terrace

On November 8, 2020, Berlin-Tegel Airport is to be closed forever after an Air France plane takes off for Paris-Charles de Gaulle. The jet is currently scheduled to take off at around 15:00 p.m., after which an era in Berlin will end. Looking back: Tegel was opened on January 2, 1960 - at that time still very provisionally. A Lockheed Super Constellation from Air France was the first aircraft to land at the then new airport. At first, however, Berlin-Tempelhof Central Airport remained the number one in Berlin, but that changed over the years. In 1974, today's hexagonal terminal was opened, which was actually supposed to be expanded to include a wider hexagon. Tempelhof was closed to civil air traffic in 1975 and had a comeback from 1981 to 2008. In Tegel, some of the expansions were strange, such as the conversion of parking decks or temporary container terminals. Unless an aviation miracle occurs, Tegel will close on November 8, 2020. The last regular scheduled flights will take place on November 7, 2020. Afterwards, Berlin-Brandenburg Airport, including the Schönefeld terminals, will be used. Berlin will then be a single-airport capital. The operating company invites the population and all those interested in aviation to experience Otto Lilienthal Airport live again. Therefore, the visitors' terrace will be open with free admission from October 3 to November 7, 2020. Between 11:00 a.m. and 20:30 p.m., a maximum of 900 people per day can enjoy the view. Attention: Due to the corona measures, free registration must be made at www.danketegel.berlin. Registration from up to

Qatar Airways: Government puts together multi-billion dollar aid package

Qatar Airways, which is actually financially strong, is also not spared from the consequences of the Corona crisis and needs state support - the Qatari government is contributing the equivalent of two billion dollars. This was urgently needed, because the Gulf airline is also in the red. According to the newly published figures, the bottom line was a loss of 1,9 billion dollars, as aljazeera.com reports. The pandemic and the failed investment in Air Italy in particular weakened the airline - and almost doubled the losses. "Without the Covid-19 pandemic, we could have topped our last financial year," said the airline's managing director, Akbar al-Baker.

Germany: Only 5 percent want to go abroad during the autumn break

While last year all of their holidays were planned in advance, only one in twenty Germans wanted to travel abroad during the autumn holidays. This was the result of a survey by the opinion research institute YouGov. Nine percent are still planning a break within the country for the school holidays. Seven percent of those surveyed have changed their minds and are now foregoing a previously planned trip abroad because of the Corona crisis. In contrast, two percent of those surveyed will cancel a trip planned in Germany. More than two thirds of those surveyed (70 percent), on the other hand, will not pack their suitcases at all and will spend the holidays at home. Last week, Federal Health Minister Jens Spahn (CDU) advised against traveling abroad during the imminent autumn and winter holidays in view of the increasing number of Corona infections.
