While the aviation, hotel and tour operators sectors are suffering massively from the corona crisis, campsites in Germany have even recorded record numbers. According to the Federal Association of the German Camping Industry, there were more than 2020 million overnight stays in July 8,5 alone - more than ever before in a single month. German accommodation providers are suffering massively from the fact that international tourists and business travelers are traveling significantly less. This led to a decline of 22 percent. Much was offset by domestic travelers, but not all of it. Campsites were able to grow during the crisis, in some cases even by double digits. Due to the lockdown phase, the bottom line is still a minus of 34,6 percent. A look at the campsites indirectly confirms the picture that the aviation industry had repeatedly outlined. Holiday trips by plane were significantly less in demand in the busiest months of July and August 2020. Many Germans spent their holidays within Germany and, interestingly, liked to use campsites. Caravan and mobile home rental companies not only recorded record sales, but were largely fully booked. But the hype is likely to be short-lived, as the peak travel season is over. The circle is now closing with aviation, as demand in autumn and winter is also low at German campsites. It will be interesting to see whether many Germans will remain loyal to their newly discovered camping in summer 2021 or whether they will rather book a flight again. It is precisely this decision, which is difficult to predict, that determines the capacity planning of many airlines.
