American Airlines remains deep red

Oneworld member American Airlines is still deep in the red. In the third quarter of 2020, the company posted a loss of 2,4 billion US dollars. The same period last year reported a profit of 425 million US dollars. If the government does not release further aid funds, there is a risk of drastic job cuts. The management of American Airlines and the relevant unions are demanding that the Trump administration resume or extend the support program that expired at the end of September 2020. Otherwise, thousands of employees face dismissal. According to the company, 20.000 people are on voluntary unpaid leave or have resigned themselves. American Airlines sent another 19.000 employees on so-called forced leave on October 1, 2020. As part of the use of loans from the state fund, which was filled with 25 billion US dollars, dismissals were excluded until the end of September 2020. This protection for employees has now been removed. Further assistance is required, as otherwise the current staffing levels will no longer be maintained. According to a statement from American Airlines, the capacity currently offered is around 59 percent of last year's level.

Cebu Pacific cooperates with Lufthansa subsidiary

Low-cost airline Cebu Pacific and Lufthansa subsidiary Jettainer have been working together since October 2020. The German provider will take over the management and maintenance of the loading equipment fleet. With this partnership, Jettainer is acquiring the airline's existing ULD fleet, which consists of around 2.700 containers. Since the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic, Cebu Pacific has been working to drive its transformation towards more efficient operations. At the same time, the airline is implementing measures such as digitization and optimization of operational processes, combined with the use of supply chain solutions, to reduce costs. "As we continue to work on expanding our global position, we are always looking for growth opportunities. With this in mind, we have had extensive discussions about the possibilities of outsourcing our ULD fleet. Jettainer's total package, which includes innovation, transparency and absolute reliability, convinced us to entrust them with our business. We believe this move will allow us to reallocate and prioritize resources and capital in a way that supports our recovery,” said Michael Ivan Shau, Chief Operations Officer at Cebu Pacific, adding: “The agreement with Jettainer also contributes to our ongoing optimization process, as their advanced technology and loading equipment provide us with the much-needed flexibility to implement our growth strategy.” Cebu Pacific intends to switch to a fully containerized fleet of Airbus jets, consisting of the A320neo, A321neo and A330 family models. Since 2017, the company has also been using an ATR72-500 cargo aircraft. It is the first pure freighter of this type in the Philippines. A second aircraft of this type is to be added at the end of the year.

Fly Armenia: AOC withdrawal without ever having flown

Fly Armenia Airways actually wanted to fly to the EU soon, but that is proving difficult because all carriers from this country are on the European Union's "blacklist" and so is the aviation authority. The startup has not yet operated a single flight, but Armenia suspended the AOC. The specialist portal CH-Aviation.com writes, citing the Armenian aviation authority, that the approval, which was only granted in July 2020, was suspended in September. However, no information on the reasons was given and Fly Armenia Airways could not be reached for comment. A possible re-acquisition can take place in November 2020 at the earliest.

Southwest flown deep in the red

The once highly profitable low-cost airline Southwest Airlines posted a loss of 2020 billion euros in the third quarter of 1,2. The company has never lost so much money in just three months. In the same period last year, it was clearly in the black at 659 million US dollars. The figures communicated by Southwest also show that sales have fallen by 68 percent to 1,8 billion US dollars. Company boss Gary Kelly does not expect demand to stabilize in the short term. In a press release, he suspects that this will only be the case when vaccines are generally available and herd immunity is achieved with them.

Green Airlines plans to launch with “Chailair” Beech 1900D

The German start-up Green Airlines announced on Thursday that "Chailair Aviation" (sic!) will take over the announced flights between Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden and Berlin-Brandenburg. It is noteworthy that the name of the French airline Chalair Aviation was misspelled, and several times. If this typo appeared just once in the press release, it would be clear that it was a simple typo. However, since "Chailair" is repeatedly written instead of "Chalair" in the subject line, the headline and the body text, it does give the impression that the correct name of the contract partner is not known. Air Alsie rejected the project for unspecified reasons. Shortly afterwards, Green Airlines removed all photos and logos that refer to the Danish carrier from its homepage. Instead of the announced ATR 72-500, 19-seat Beech 1900Ds can now be seen in the Green Airlines reservation system. On Thursday afternoon, only one seat was marked as blocked on the first flight. Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport issued a press release on Thursday about the upcoming 2020/21 winter flight schedule. FKB did not mention Green Airlines at all. There is also not a single reference to the planned service on the airport's homepage or in the flight schedule. Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport recently announced that the flights had not yet been registered.

Athens-Ellinikon: once gateway to the world, now demolished lost place

The airport has been closed since 2001, but the East Terminal, for example, is completely legally accessible from the outside. There are no barriers or fences. There is only one security guard on site around the clock to prevent further vandalism. Incidentally, another "garbage dump" appears to be the former petrol station. There you can find pretty much all the bulky waste that can accrue in households. While the atmosphere that you can perceive at the West Terminal actually only consists of a car park, a huge pile of rubble and signs indicating departures and arrivals, there is much more to see in the East. Depending on your position, you have a good or bad view of the area. In places, bushes, small trees, grass and lots of weeds grow between the concrete slabs. Nature is reclaiming the former airfield. Unfortunately, this is also coupled with a lot of junk that has been left behind or disposed of by the population. Construction rubble and other rubbish, of course, included. The feeling at the East Terminal is a little "strange". Many signs are now very faint, but at first glance it would also pass for a departure hall that is on Corona break. The closer you get, the more obvious it becomes how desolate the buildings are. Entering without a helmet is very dangerous, say the employees of the owner company. There is an explicit warning against "entering" the fenced-in areas or buildings without permission, a helmet and accompaniment by a representative of the owner who knows the area. It is relatively easy to get permission if you ask for it. If you do not do this, however, the security guards who are omnipresent will

WDL rents Embraer 190 to Ego Airways

The German ACMI and charter provider WDL Aviation was able to accommodate an Embraer 190 regional jet with the Italian start-up "Ego Airways". The D-AZFB is already at Malpensa Airport and will be re-registered in the Italian register as I-EGOA at a later date. Citing a company spokesperson, Airliners.de reports that this is a dry lease. Put simply, this means that Ego Airways is renting the aircraft without staff. The Italian company does not currently have an AOC. The company plans to operate the Embraer 190 itself once operations begin. This is currently planned for December 2020.
