Brussels with 120 destinations - Innsbruck is in the air

Brussels Airport is starting its winter flight schedule with 120 destinations. Despite the corona pandemic, these may include new destinations such as Kittila, Kuusamo and Innsbruck. However, their inclusion depends on how the crisis develops. The Air France-KLM low-cost subsidiary Transavia has not yet made a final decision on whether or not to include the "ski route" to Tyrol. The background to this is the travel warning issued by Belgium. This means that a quarantine could be imposed on return. This obviously has an enormous negative impact on demand. Transavia is therefore monitoring further developments and will decide at a later date whether to hop or drop flights between Brussels and Innsbruck. According to current planning, home base carrier Brussels Airlines is offering 2020 destinations in the 21/50 winter flight schedule, including 16 long-haul destinations. Tuifly Belgium currently has 30 destinations in its program. A total of 40 airlines plan to operate 450 connections per week from Brussels to 120 destinations. It is currently impossible to estimate the extent to which reductions may be necessary due to developments in the pandemic. The situation is changing week by week, sometimes even daily, across Europe.

Dortmund with more winter destinations than last year

Dortmund Airport has managed a small "feat" in the middle of the Corona pandemic: While many airports are suffering from reduced services, the regional airport even has more destinations than last year. 42 destinations in 25 countries are served - in the previous period there were 39 destinations in 22 countries. However, the quite euphoric announcement by Dortmund Airport should also be treated with a little caution, because the last few months and weeks have shown that due to very short-term and dynamic developments in the Corona pandemic, routes are often started later or not at all. Terminations are also absolutely not uncommon. It therefore remains to be seen whether the airlines operating in Dortmund will actually fly to 42 destinations in 25 countries.

ANA before halving its long-haul fleet

Japan's All Nippon Airways is facing drastic cuts due to the corona crisis. Around half of the 60-plane long-haul fleet is to be shut down and up to 3.500 jobs are at risk. The staff cuts are to be completed by 2022. If possible, Japan wants to avoid dismissals, which are frowned upon, and prefers not to fill vacancies when employees retire or leave voluntarily. However, redundancies cannot be completely ruled out. In Japanese culture, loyalty to the company is extremely important, so employer dismissals are very rare and are only the absolute last resort. Kydo News also writes that the long-haul strategy is being revised. This means that around 30 of 60 long-haul jets will have to be shut down. It is unclear whether these can ever be put back into service. Japan's entry and quarantine regulations are extremely strict. This has a very detrimental effect on the business of ANA and its competitors. Tourist entries are currently not possible.

Helvetic cancels “pop-up flights”

The Swiss regional airline is abandoning the concept of so-called pop-up flights due to the new corona wave. According to the company, no further such trips are currently planned. Helvetic is also not currently flying on the route on its own account. A Helvetic spokesperson confirmed to the Swiss newspaper Blick that no further pop-up flights are planned for the time being due to the current corona situation. This also includes the recently announced trip to Florence, which has already been canceled. The program was complicated from the start, because the first "pop-up flight", planned to Montenegro, had to be canceled because Switzerland had put the destination country on the quarantine list shortly beforehand. Two trips to Croatia and one to Greece were carried out. Helvetic Airways and the cooperating tour operators also had to cancel those planned to Paris and Vilnius due to the pandemic situation. Much more problematic for Helvetic Airways, however, is that Swiss will make drastic cuts in its winter flight schedule. Currently, some aircraft are in use for the largest customer, but this could change downwards depending on how the pandemic develops. Blick writes, citing a Helvetic spokesperson, that the company plans to get through the winter with charter flights and football charters. It is expected that a maximum of 30 percent of capacity will be in the air.

Bergamo is sticking to expansion plans

Despite the coronavirus pandemic, Milan Bergamo Airport is sticking to its master plan to further develop its infrastructure. A new arrivals area with an additional Schengen area was recently unveiled. In total, the company plans to invest 435 million euros and increase the total area of the terminal to 70.000 square meters. This also includes the current expansion work on the west side of the existing building to prepare for a future direct connection to rail traffic, which will significantly improve the connectivity options for the airport's passengers. "We must look ahead and remain positive that we will return to pre-pandemic traffic levels and therefore we must remain prepared and ready for the future," explains Giacomo Cattaneo, Director of Commercial Aviation at SACBO. "While we expand and develop our infrastructure, we remain true to our simple approach for both passengers and our airline partners. We want to ensure that we continue to be a fast and vibrant airport, full of services and facilities for everyone." While construction work continues to gain momentum, the airport remains committed to expanding its route network. Most recently, Blue Panorama celebrated its first flight to Dakar. The Italian airline's connection to the capital of Senegal, which launched last Friday, complements the airport's growing range of African routes, alongside flights to Morocco and Egypt. "We are delighted that Blue Panorama has recognised the demand in the market and decided to serve the large Senegalese community in Italy from Milan Bergamo. Despite the hardships of this year, we remain committed to our passengers and partners and it is
