The Bavarian Nuremberg Airport counted around 2021 million passengers in 1,1. This was around 16 percent above the volume in 2020, but around a quarter below 2019. The airport hopes that the Ryanair base will give another boost in the current calendar year.
Airport boss Michael Hupe is of the opinion that the “desire to travel is growing again” and assumes “a significant recovery in passenger numbers, depending on the Corona situation”. Hopes are now directed towards the summer of 2022: Nuremberg Airport assumes that the route offer will include over 60 destinations, most of which are already bookable. Ryanair alone will be flying to 27 destinations with two stationed aircraft from the end of March. Corendon Airlines also follows with two stationed aircraft and 23 destinations. In total, more than 20 airlines fly to Nuremberg Airport on a regular basis.
In the previous year, Corendon, Ryanair and Turkish Airlines were the airlines that carried the most passengers to / from Nuremberg. KLM offered most of the frequencies in transfer traffic and flew without a pandemic-related interruption. After a difficult start to the year in the 2020/21 winter lockdown, traffic and demand recovered noticeably during the summer months. Up to 40 destinations could be reached non-stop again in the high season, including the most important hubs, holiday and city destinations. With the emergence of new variants of the COVID-19 virus, the demand for flights has recently decreased again and most airlines reduced their offer again, so that the traffic development in winter 2021/22 fell below expectations. The air freight business proved to be much more dynamic, including for urgently needed medical material and equipment. With 7.935 tonnes flown, the value was 15 percent above the previous year and even above the pre-Corona value of 2019.
