Still in May: Play takes over the first A321neo

The Icelandic airline start-up Play has been relatively quiet for some time, but now the company has announced that it will take delivery of its first Airbus A2021neo in the last week of May 321. Two more aircraft are to follow in July 2021, meaning the carrier will take off with three A321neos. Company boss Birgir Jónsson told the daily newspaper Morgunblaðið that pilot training has already started. This is being carried out in a simulator center in the United Kingdom. The AOC and operating license are expected to be granted in May 2021. The first commercial flight is scheduled to take place at the end of June 2021. The three A321neos will have around 200 seats. Initially, the company plans to fly primarily to European destinations. After US travel restrictions are relaxed, destinations in the United States are also being considered. The fleet is to grow to six to seven aircraft. Jónsson said the time horizon was "around autumn 2021". During a TV interview, the manager named the first destinations from Reykjavik: London, Paris, Copenhagen, Alicante and Tenerife. The planned US flights could start in autumn 2021 at the earliest, but Birgir Jónsson said in this media interview that spring 2022 is realistic. This also includes the travel restrictions in the United States. Ultimately, the company is building on the business model of the failed Wow-Air and wants to build a hub for transatlantic flights between Europe and the USA in Reykjavik Keflavik.

Germany deletes Malta and UK from the risk list

Germany is lifting the travel warnings for Malta, the United Kingdom and Albania. The Portuguese region of Algarve is also no longer classified as a risk area. The state-run Robert Koch Institute made these changes, which the Foreign Office's travel warnings are based on. The German classifications are primarily based on the seven-day incidence. For several weeks now, virus mutations have also been taken into account. The multi-stage system begins with an incidence of 50, which then results in entry on the risk list. However, the deletions are not always consistent, as the Canary Islands, for example, have had a seven-day incidence of less than 50 for some time and are still designated as a risk area. The Finnish regions of Uusimaa and Varsinais-Suomi and the Norwegian province of Rogaland have made it off Germany's "red list". Armenia, Montenegro, Poland and Hungary have been downgraded from high-incidence areas to risk areas.

April 2021: Airbus delivered 45 machines

The European aircraft manufacturer Airbus was able to deliver significantly fewer aircraft in April 2021 - in direct comparison with March 2021. The manufacturer announced that 45 commercial aircraft had been handed over to customers. In March, the figure was 72. In the first four months of the current year, Airbus was able to deliver a total of 170 aircraft. In April 2021, 48 new orders were also placed. At the same time, customers also canceled orders for 22 commercial aircraft. Due to the corona pandemic, production is currently running at only 60 percent of capacity. This is to be ramped up to pre-crisis levels by summer.

AUA announces Linate flights - withdrawal from Malpensa

From June 1, 2021, Austrian Airlines will fly up to twice a day between Vienna and Milan-Linate. At the same time, the previous connection to Malpensa will be discontinued. The carrier was able to secure slots at the metropolis' inner-city airport a few weeks ago. AUA was also allocated take-off and landing rights for a connection between Salzburg and Linate, but a spokesperson told Aviation Direct that - unlike Vienna - these will not be used. Slots in Linate are considered extremely popular because the airport is located within the city of Milan. "Linate is much more comfortable for our passengers, especially for business travelers from Milan and the surrounding area," says Chief Sales Officer Michael Trestl. A mix of Embraer 195 and A320 family aircraft will be used on the route. UFO and VC strongly criticize Carsten Spohr

The unions UFO and Vereinigung Cockpit have strongly criticized statements made by Lufthansa CEO Carsten Spohr to shareholders and on the program "Offengesagt". The employee representatives see this as a frontal attack on the collective agreements. The Kranich boss said, among other things, that the collective agreements would cause a "cost explosion" and could therefore also endanger jobs. He also questioned the benefits of the social partnership and suggested, among other things, that the closure of Germanwings was also related to the high strike rate. The unions claim that it should now be obvious that management has decided against Germanwings and in favor of the non-unionized Eurowings Discover. According to the two employee representatives, Carsten Spohr's statements are "an affront to all employees of the Lufthansa Group". They are therefore now demanding that the Lufthansa board make a clear commitment to the company's collective agreements. The appeal is also directed to the federal government, asking the state, as the largest single shareholder, to intervene and ensure “respect for the rights of employees as provided for in the constitution and the Collective Bargaining Act”.

Karlsruhe starts electric charity sharing

Electric cars from the provider Deer can now be rented at Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport. This is a so-called car sharing concept. VW ID.3 vehicles are stationed on site. Two charging points have been set up in front of the regional airport's terminal. The electric cars are usually parked at these. According to the press release, one-way trips should also be possible, provided they are returned to another charging station from the provider Deer. "Due to the transport and climate change, we urgently need mobility concepts for the future that enable more mobility with fewer vehicles," explains Horst Graef, Managing Director of Deer GmbH. "Sharing our electric vehicles is aimed precisely at this and takes people from A to B in an ecologically and economically optimized way. We are pleased that with Karlsruhe/Baden-Baden Airport we have been able to integrate a second important transport hub into our mobility network and together reduce CO2 emissions."

Survey: The majority of Austrians should be critical of openings

A recent survey conducted on behalf of the Austrian television station ATV found that 17 percent of respondents believe that the openings announced for May 19, 2021 pose a high risk for intensive care units. Only eight percent of Austrians see "no risk whatsoever." 51 percent of respondents said they consider the risk to be moderate. SPÖ voters are particularly critical of the opening, with 83 percent seeing a medium or high risk for intensive care units. FPÖ voters are less critical of the opening on May 19, 2021: 36 percent see a low risk for intensive care medicine, 28 percent see no risk. "The question is ultimately: is the risk manageable? FPÖ voters are likely to be convinced of this, as 64 percent see only a low or no risk. At the end of the day, it's a game against time," says opinion researcher Peter Hajek.

Flying personnel: Lauda Europe starts vaccination campaign

The second largest airline operating at Vienna-Schwechat Airport, Lauda Europe, is also launching a vaccination campaign for its flight crew. According to the letter sent to employees, this is being carried out in cooperation with the state of Lower Austria and Flughafen Wien AG. A vaccination line has now been set up in the Handling Center West, which is operated under the supervision of the state of Lower Austria. This is not intended exclusively for Lauda Europe and/or Austrian Airlines, but for all companies operating at the airport. The order resulting from the national vaccination plan Phase III continues to apply. For transport companies or carriers, this initially stipulates that people with direct customer contact and/or increased foreign travel that cannot be avoided for professional reasons are first in line. All other employees will have their turn at a later date as part of the company vaccinations, which are carried out under the supervision of the respective federal state. Lauda Europe flight crew can register for the vaccination campaign through the Human Resources Department until May 12, 2021. The usual information must be provided. The appointments for the vaccinations are then allocated. The letter does not state which vaccine will be used. The vaccine is allocated by the state of Lower Austria anyway, so Vienna Airport and/or Lauda Europe have no influence on this. Similar campaigns are also currently being carried out by the sister company Buzz, which has three Boeing 737-800s stationed in Vienna, and by competitor Wizz Air. What all airlines have in common is that the infrastructure that was set up in the Handling Center West as part of the company vaccinations is being used. The
