Austro Control: These are the next steps for the newly founded DHL

The Austrian Austro Control confirms that DHL Express wants to set up a new cargo airline in Austria. The application for an AOC and operating license is already in preparation. The newly founded airline is primarily intended to serve the intra-European market. DHL Express has chosen Austria as its location after an intensive evaluation process. A key factor in this was the high international reputation enjoyed by the aviation authorities in Austria, Austro Control and BMK. In the wake of Brexit, over 100 easyJet aircraft were successfully placed on the Austrian aircraft register as part of a similar process. Once DHL's AOC application has been received, Austro Control will initiate the review process based on the relevant EU regulations. If the process is successful, the new airline wants to locate its headquarters and key personnel near Vienna and would fly under the Austrian national emblem with Austrian registration plates on its aircraft. "We are delighted that DHL Express has decided to submit the application for an AOC to Austro Control. The decisive factor was the excellent international reputation that we have earned, not least through the acquisition of easyJet on the Austrian aircraft register, and of course the high quality of the domestic aviation authorities in the BMK and at Austro Control," says Austro Control Managing Director Valerie Hackl in an initial reaction. As part of this AOC process, the following key audit areas are the focus: How is the operation, how are the management systems organized Which aircraft are to be operated Do pilots have the necessary qualifications Which approach and departure procedures are used

From Vienna: Wizz Air is bringing eleven routes back into the program

Wizz Air is reactivating 11 routes to and from Vienna in the next few days. This means that 61 Wizz routes to 31 countries can currently be booked from Austria. Wizz Air is starting the comeback marathon with two attractive city destinations: From May 31.05, passengers can again travel from Vienna to Milan and Athens. From June 14.06, the Milan frequency will be increased to five times a week and the Athens frequency to four times a week. Island flights to Malta and Crete will also be resumed. The numerous reactivations are a reaction to the travel restrictions that have been relaxed with immediate effect, meaning that only 3G proof (tested, recovered or vaccinated) is required to return to Austria from Italy or Greece, for example. "Bookings are currently picking up strongly and I am therefore sure: Summer 2021 will be a travel summer! My colleagues and I are delighted to finally be able to welcome more and more Austrians on board again,” said Andras Rado, Senior Corporate Communications Manager at Wizz Air.

Due to the spread of the B.1.617.2 variant of the coronavirus, which was first discovered in India, Austria has again imposed a landing ban on aircraft from Great Britain. From June 1, no aircraft from the United Kingdom will be allowed to land in Austria, according to a decree from the Ministry of Health. In addition, Great Britain is already on the list of virus variant areas. As in the case of Brazil, India and South Africa, entry from the United Kingdom is therefore only possible to a limited extent. Essentially, only Austrian citizens and people with a residence or habitual abode in Austria are allowed to enter.

DHL founds cargo airline in Austria

Since Amerer Air withdrew from the air freight segment in 2012, there has no longer been a pure cargo airline in Austria. This is now changing, as the logistics group DHL has founded a branch in the Alpine republic. The new company will be based near the capital Vienna and will operate Boeing 757F aircraft. These will be transferred from sister company DHL Air UK. In return, the British cargo airline will focus more on long-haul traffic. Boeing 777Fs will be introduced into the fleet for this purpose. "With the new airline, we are not only adapting our European network to changed regulations, but also preparing it for further growth," explains Roy Hughes, Head of the European Air Freight Network at DHL Express. "With this step, we are meeting our customers' continued high demand for cross-border express deliveries and can provide them with sufficient express capacity. With the new structure, we can make our air traffic network in Europe more flexible and stable and at the same time ensure better integration into our global network through a higher number of intercontinental flights.” “The decision to locate in Austria is a strong signal for our country,” explains Magnus Brunner, State Secretary for Aviation. “A new airline with an Austrian license that is intended to create new jobs on the ground – i.e. in administration – creates added value. This decision to locate the airport recognizes the quality of Austro Control. This confirms the competence of Austro Control and the Supreme Civil Aviation Authority located in the BMK. The State Secretary also refers to Austria’s geographical location in the heart of Europe: Austria has a central position due to its infrastructure and is a hub

Sanctions: EU bans Belarus from flying and landing

The European Union is not leaving the forced landing of a Ryanair plane unpunished. Among other things, the new sanctions package against Belarus includes an EU-wide flight and landing ban. The 27 heads of state and government agreed on this at the special EU summit. According to this, Belarusian airlines should no longer be allowed to use EU airspace and airports. In their summit declaration, the heads of state and government also called on EU airlines to stop flying over Belarus' airspace. "The verdict was unanimous, this is an attack on democracy, this is an attack on freedom of expression and this is an attack on European sovereignty," said EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen. "This outrageous behavior requires a strong response." The first airlines are already avoiding the airspace. The airlines Lufthansa, SAS, Wizzair and Air Baltic announced that they would no longer fly over Belarus in the future. Lithuania, where the Ryanair plane was headed on Sunday, is banning all takeoffs and landings of planes flying over Belarusian airspace from Tuesday, as stern.de reports. The Ukrainian president is putting trips related to Belarus on hold for the time being. The Lithuanian government has also confirmed such plans. On Sunday, Minsk forced a Ryanair plane on its way from Athens to Vilnius to make a stopover in Minsk using a fighter jet and citing a bomb threat from the radical Islamic Hamas. After landing, the opposition activist Protassevich, who lives in exile in Poland and Lithuania, and his girlfriend from Russia were arrested.

Swiss completes A220 fleet renewal with 30th aircraft

AUA's sister airline took delivery of its 30th Airbus A220 at Zurich Airport, thereby reaching an important milestone in the fleet renewal project. It was the first to order and operate the aircraft model, which was developed from scratch. The Airbus A220-300, registered HB-JCU, was christened "Davos" upon arrival. The aircraft, registered HB-JCU, was flown in directly from Mirabel, Airbus Canada's plant in Montreal. With the arrival of the Airbus A220-300, the carrier has successfully completed the introduction of this short- and medium-haul aircraft with lower CO2 emissions. "With the arrival of the 30th Airbus A220 today, we have reached an important milestone in the largest fleet renewal project in Swiss' history," explains airline boss Dieter Vranckx. "We are proud to operate 30 aircraft of this innovative aircraft type. The Airbus A220 contributes to our having one of the most modern fleets in Europe. This is how we are taking our environmental responsibility seriously and will continue to invest in modern aircraft and technologies in the future," said Vranckx. Swiss now operates nine aircraft of the smaller Airbus A220-100 (125 seats) and 21 of the larger Airbus A220-300 (145 seats). It was the first to order and operate the aircraft model, which was developed from scratch.
