Appeal to the EU: Austria for immediate kerosene taxation

A few days ago, the EU announced an EU-wide minimum tax that will gradually be imposed on kerosene from 2023. This is not happening fast enough for domestic aviation representatives: Austria, together with Belgium, is joining a Luxembourg initiative to accelerate the taxation of kerosene. The transport ministers of the three countries sent a joint letter to the EU Commission on Tuesday. According to this, the European Union should refrain from the phased model and initiate the taxation "immediately". According to the draft, the minimum tax rate for aviation fuel would start at zero from 2023 and gradually increase over a period of ten years until the full tax rate is met. The environment does not have that much time. The European "Green Deal" can only be realized if the exemption for aviation fuel is dropped. The paper also outlines possible consequences if the plan is not implemented by the European Union. In the letter, which is addressed to Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, her two Commission Vice-Presidents Frans Timmermans and Margarethe Vestager, as well as four other Commissioners, the initiators point out the possibility for individual member states to take their own measures in this regard. However, this is the last resort, as the common market would suffer as a result. This is reported by the Kurier. Green Climate Minister Leonore Gewessler and Aviation State Secretary Magnus Brunner (ÖVP) signed for Austria.

USA: No more air travel to Belarus

The United States is also sending a clear, if only symbolic, signal to Belarus. The US Department of Transportation is banning the sale of airline tickets to Belarus. It is primarily a symbolic step, as there are no direct flights between the two countries. The American pilots' association ALPA welcomed the Ministry of Transportation's order, for which exceptions are only made if they are in the national interest of the United States, for humanitarian reasons and for reasons of national security. This is reported by Tagesschau. The background to the restrictions is the diversion of a Ryanair flight to Minsk and the subsequent arrest of a Belarusian journalist who was on board. The blogger Roman Protassevich faces 15 years in prison.

Cooperation between Dronamics and the Bodensee-Airport Friedrichshafen

Don't be surprised if more and more drones appear over Lake Constance Airport: Friedrichshafen will be embedded in the planned Europe-wide network of Dronamics, a British company that specializes in setting up a freight network with unmanned drones. The signed letter of intent includes the necessary storage space for the goods to be transported, parking space for the drone and the commercial framework after an introductory phase. Use of the drones - European connections The drone, which will soon be undergoing flight testing and certification, will be operated under the name "The Black Swan" and can transport a payload of 350 kg. The range of the Black Swan is 2.500 km. By linking up to 22 drone ports across Europe (including Belgium, Croatia, Hungary, Romania, Italy, Sweden, Portugal, etc.), ideal coverage of the entire European area is to be achieved. "In Dronamics we have found a cooperation partner who will inspire the freight business with innovative technology. This will also open up completely new opportunities for the movement of goods for our industry in the Lake Constance region and also demonstrate the future-oriented strength of an airport in this region," said the airport's managing director, Claus-Dieter Wehr.

Fraport receives compensation for the costs incurred

Fraport AG has received compensation totaling around 160 million euros from the Federal Republic of Germany and the State of Hesse for uncovered holding costs incurred at Frankfurt Airport during the first lockdown last year. The full amount has a positive impact on the Group's operating result (EBITDA) and thus strengthens Fraport AG's equity. In February of this year, the federal and state governments had already agreed in principle on corresponding aid for several German airports. "We are still in the biggest crisis in modern aviation, which is causing high losses. We have kept Frankfurt Airport open for return flights and freight traffic throughout, although from an economic point of view a temporary suspension of operations would have made more sense. The reimbursement by the federal government and the State of Hesse is a strong signal for the preservation of the airport infrastructure," said Stefan Schulte, CEO of Fraport AG.

Lufthansa Technik turns an Airbus into a laboratory

The aviation industry in Hamburg is preparing to fly with hydrogen. The starting signal has now been given for the construction of a new development platform. With funding from the Hanseatic city, Lufthansa Technik, together with the DLR, the ZAL and Hamburg Airport, will design and test extensive maintenance and ground processes for dealing with hydrogen technology over the next two years. For this purpose, an aircraft from the Airbus A320 family will be converted into a stationary laboratory at the Lufthansa Technik base in Hamburg. "The transformation of our industry towards climate-neutral flying is unavoidable. With this project, we want to tackle this enormous technological challenge, also for the MRO industry, at an early stage. In doing so, we are actively securing the future because we are already building up know-how for the maintenance and ground processes of the day after tomorrow," explained Johannes Bußmann, CEO of Lufthansa Technik AG. "I am therefore pleased that we have succeeded in joining forces with strong partners on this project. I am very grateful for the foresight of the city of Hamburg and the generous support of this project."

Air France ends the Embraer 145 era

The Embraer 145 model is now rarely seen in Europe. The Air France subsidiary Hop still used the small regional jet on a larger scale, but that is now officially over. The last unit, F-GRGC, has not flown for a long time anyway. Air France decided some time ago that the now aging Embraer 145s would leave the Hop fleet. Now comes the final end for the F-GRGC, which has been in service with the group since 1997. This regional jet was last in commercial scheduled service on March 20, 2020. Since then, this Embraer 145, the last of its kind at Air France, has been waiting for better times. It will no longer have these at Air France, because the aircraft was formally taken out of service on July 5, 2021. This also marks the end of the era of the Embraer 145 at the French aviation group. Or not? The E145 regional jets operated by the Slovenian company Amelia under a wet lease agreement will continue to be in use. The three aircraft will be used from Paris-Orly.

Green Airlines: Alk Air withdrew aircraft prematurely

The charter marketer Green Airlines has lost another "airline partner" because the Bulgarian Alk Air withdrew the chartered Boeing 737-300. There seems to be a bad atmosphere between the two companies, with the passengers being the ones who suffer. Alk Air operated the last charter flight for Green Airlines on July 4125, 5 under flight number VBB2021. After the LZ-MVK landed in Rhodes from Rostock, it did not go to Paderborn as announced, but back to the home base in Sofia. All subsequent Green Airlines charters were no longer carried out. In the meantime, some airports no longer list the connections at all. Green Airlines knew that it had a serious problem because it no longer had an operating carrier for the flights it had sold. Nevertheless, sales were open for a relatively long time before they were stopped for the rest of the week under VBB flight numbers. Passengers received a terse and ultra-short email just one day before departure that their booking had been canceled. This is written in English, does not contain a signature or telephone number and certainly no instructions on passenger rights. Three completely different explanations Alk Air simply stated that it would no longer fly for Green Airlines. The Bulgarian airline did not give any reasons. The company's customer service wrote briefly and succinctly that the flights had been cancelled by the carrier. They were offering rebookings with other airlines. However, this is only a small "consolation", because there are no same-day connections to Paderborn and Rostock from Rhodes, for example, that would not feel like a "tour of Europe". It is also noteworthy that the press office of Green

Air France gives an insight into long-haul offers

Air France is continuing to adapt its route network and increasing its offerings to "leisure" destinations. For the 2021 winter season (October 2021 - March 2022), the airline is offering its customers new connections to sunny destinations around the world from Paris-Charles de Gaulle. The carrier's first flight to Zanzibar (Tanzania) will take off on October 18. The route will be operated twice a week with a Boeing 787-9. The destination Colombo (Sri Lanka) will also be celebrating its premiere with three weekly flights. Papeete (French Polynesia) will also be served more frequently due to increasing demand - up to five times a week from November 3. The Middle East is not neglected either: Air France will fly to Muscat (Oman) three times a week from October 31, 2021. The airline will be stepping up its service on the route to Dubai (United Arab Emirates), with the company aiming for up to 23 flights per week from October 14. Finally, USA lovers can also rejoice, as the connection to Miami will be expanded to up to 12 weekly flights.

Brussels puts Tarom state aid on hold

The Romanian airline Tarom cannot expect that the state aid will be paid out quickly. The EU Commission has announced an in-depth review of the rescue plan. The government wants to give the ailing carrier a helping hand with 190 million euros, but the plan submitted in Brussels differs greatly from that of other countries. The plan is to forgive Tarom's debts and at the same time inject capital. Since the airline had already received repeated financial support from Romania before the crisis, it is now being looked at more closely. However, the comparison with Alitalia seems obscure, because Italy has waved through pretty much every form of state aid in recent years. For Tarom, however, it is likely to prove complicated that the government paid around 2020 million euros into the carrier in February 37. At that time, the green light was given after a lengthy discussion. In October 2020, a guarantee was granted for a loan of 19 million euros. Some competitors are taking legal action against the authorisations granted by the EU Commission before the Court of Justice of the European Union.
