Malta mandatory vaccination: Curious justification by the Minister of Tourism
The fact that Malta has only been allowing fully vaccinated tourists to enter since Wednesday is likely to cause another "quasi-total failure" for tourism. The ministry is now trying to find a justification for the new entry regulations. Among other things, it writes: "Malta is proud to be considered one of the safest summer travel destinations in Europe, having achieved herd immunity (over 80% of adults are vaccinated) and hopes to be able to safely welcome EU tourists this summer." Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo is quoted as saying "All our decisions aim to find a balance and put the health of Maltese citizens and tourists coming to our country first." The Ministry of Tourism summarizes the current "corona rules" as follows: Wearing masks on beaches and in swimming pools is recommended, but is no longer mandatory. A maximum of 2 people are allowed to remove their masks in public outdoor areas if they are vaccinated and have an official vaccination certificate. Beach bars, cafes, restaurants and cultural clubs are open and can accommodate up to six people per table, discos and nightclubs are closed. Fully vaccinated tourists arriving from the EU are not subject to quarantine or other restrictions, while unvaccinated tourists from the same countries must undergo mandatory quarantine.
