Freight: Leipzig grew again in July 2021

Corona test kits and increased online trading, among other things, brought further growth in the freight sector to Leipzig/Halle Airport in July 2021. 133.873 tons were handled, 9,1 percent more than in the same month last year. In the first seven months of the year, volumes rose by 18,9 percent compared to the same period last year to around 899.682 tons. This means that the significant freight growth continued in the second half of the year. Last year, more than 1,38 million tons of freight were handled, a new record result. The airport is DHL's largest hub worldwide and Amazon Air's first regional air freight center in Europe. This makes the airport one of the most important hubs for express and e-commerce shipments. A total of over 82 cargo airlines fly to the airport and serve a route network that includes over 271 destinations worldwide. The airport records up to 1.300 take-offs and landings in freight traffic every week.

For the eighth time: Budapest receives Skytrax Award

Budapest Airport was able to defend its Skytrax title of “Best Airport in Eastern Europe” again this year. This award was given to Hungary's largest airport for the eighth time in a row. "It is a great honour that Budapest Airport has been named the best airport in Eastern Europe for the eighth time in a row based on the votes of passengers. Especially given that the last 18 months have been the most difficult period for the aviation industry, requiring extra efforts from everyone. This year's award is therefore particularly meaningful to us, as passengers have recognised not only the airport's overall performance, but also our response to the pandemic," said Budapest CEO Chris Dinsdale.

Half-year figures: Etihad in the black

The corona pandemic has hit almost all airlines around the world hard. It also left its mark on the previously successful Gulf carriers. Etihad Airways has now announced that it expects to have achieved an operating profit in the first half of 2021. EBITDA is reported to be positive at 0,1 billion US dollars. The Abu Dhabi carrier seems to have achieved a small work of art, as the communicated capacity utilization achieved in the first six months of the current year is stated to be only 24,9 percent. This low factor is attributed in particular to the entry and quarantine regulations that many countries have issued due to the corona pandemic. The otherwise strong passenger business was rather weak for obvious reasons. However, Etihad seems to have succeeded in generating more revenue in the cargo sector. In this segment, it reports a 56 percent increase to the equivalent of around 0,8 billion US dollars. Another building block was the reduction in costs. According to the announcement, this was reduced to 1,4 billion US dollars.

Germany: DB train drivers on strike

Rail travelers in Germany must be very patient, as the German Train Drivers' Union is calling on its members to go on strike. In a ballot in which 70 percent took part, 95 percent voted in favor of the industrial action, according to the GdL. Train drivers in Deutsche Bahn AG's freight transport have been called to strike since 19 p.m. on Tuesday. On Wednesday, at 00 a.m., the call to employees in passenger transport and infrastructure followed. The measure is scheduled to last until 2 a.m. on August 00, 13. Union leader Claus Weselsky criticizes the fact that managers should receive high company pensions while at the same time train drivers' pensions are to be cut by around 2021 euros per month. According to him, train drivers are only entitled to a company pension of 2 euros per month, while managers should receive up to 00 euros. Deutsche Bahn AG expects that many train connections will be canceled due to the strike. Since not all train drivers are members of the GdL and there may also be strikebreakers, some connections can be offered. Nevertheless, travelers must be very patient. Private railway companies are not affected by the industrial action and, as long as the tracks are not blocked, are running as scheduled. International connections may also be affected by the strike, as they may not be able to travel through Germany due to a lack of train drivers.
