The last meeting of the Supervisory Board this year was dominated by the current operational and financial issues of the airport company.
The management reported to the supervisory board that a major reason for the long waiting times, especially on the first weekend of the autumn vacation, were the pandemic-related staff shortages among service providers and process partners. The FBB then successfully organized support at the critical points. In preparation for the Christmas traffic, further measures were taken, such as the expansion of the seating in the waiting areas, cleaning intervals, orientation in the terminal, even closer coordination with all process partners in the terminal and - in preparation for winter - the restarting of the 2. Runway.
With a view to the summer flight schedule 2022, the management reported on the preparations for the commissioning of Terminal 2. The schedule until the end of March includes training programs for FBB employees, the authorities, airlines and service providers as well as trial operations. The management also reported to the Supervisory Board on the status of the repair of the moving walks in Terminal 1. Starting with the repair of the systems in the Main Pier, the moving walks will gradually be put back into operation from summer 2022. The expected traffic development was also discussed. After the expected almost 10 million passengers this year, FBB is assuming that it will be able to welcome 17 million passengers at BER in the coming year.
“The management gave the supervisory board a detailed report on the difficulties encountered during the autumn holidays and presented the measures FBB will take to ensure that things run smoothly at BER during the Christmas holidays and beyond. We have also made it clear that the structural staff shortage among partners at the airport and the high additional expense for the pandemic-related travel regulations of the various destination countries will pose major challenges for the passenger processes at BER well into the coming year. However, none of this will prevent us from further improving the passenger processes together with our partners at BER ”, says Aletta von Massenbach, CEO of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH.
