Good Bye in Downunder: Cobham has floated out the last Jumbolino
The BAe 146 regional jet, also known as the Jumbolino, is now rarely seen. The last operator in Germany was WDL, which now operates as German Airways and has become an Embraer 190 operator. In Australia, Cobham Aviation Services Australia operated the last commercial flight with this model. This aviation company was once one of the world's largest BAe 146 operators. Since 1990, over 33 examples - including the successor model Avro RJ - have been in operation. The last example, VH-NJY, was taken out of service towards the end of last year. The regional jet with this registration was an Avro RJ100, which was taken over by Cityflyer Express in 1998 for a British Airways operation. In 2021, the four-engine aircraft moved Down Under. Cobham's last BAe 146 flight was a so-called "fly in - fly out" charter between Murrin Murrin and Perth. This aircraft type had been in use in Western Australia since 1985. The now defunct Ansett and National Jet Systems, from which Cobham emerged, originally brought the British four-jet aircraft to Down Under. The successor models Avro RJ85/RJ100 had been in use at Cobham since 1998. The operation of the 20 Boeing 717s, five de Havilland Dash 8-400s and four Embraer 190s is to be continued. The first-mentioned aircraft type is also used for domestic flights for Qantas under the brand Qantas Link. There is no direct successor for the retired BAe 146s.
