Good Bye in Downunder: Cobham has floated out the last Jumbolino

The BAe 146 regional jet, also known as the Jumbolino, is now rarely seen. The last operator in Germany was WDL, which now operates as German Airways and has become an Embraer 190 operator. In Australia, Cobham Aviation Services Australia operated the last commercial flight with this model. This aviation company was once one of the world's largest BAe 146 operators. Since 1990, over 33 examples - including the successor model Avro RJ - have been in operation. The last example, VH-NJY, was taken out of service towards the end of last year. The regional jet with this registration was an Avro RJ100, which was taken over by Cityflyer Express in 1998 for a British Airways operation. In 2021, the four-engine aircraft moved Down Under. Cobham's last BAe 146 flight was a so-called "fly in - fly out" charter between Murrin Murrin and Perth. This aircraft type had been in use in Western Australia since 1985. The now defunct Ansett and National Jet Systems, from which Cobham emerged, originally brought the British four-jet aircraft to Down Under. The successor models Avro RJ85/RJ100 had been in use at Cobham since 1998. The operation of the 20 Boeing 717s, five de Havilland Dash 8-400s and four Embraer 190s is to be continued. The first-mentioned aircraft type is also used for domestic flights for Qantas under the brand Qantas Link. There is no direct successor for the retired BAe 146s.

Last year, 9,95 million passengers took off and landed at BER

A total of 9,95 million passengers took off or landed at BER last year. That was almost 900.000 more passengers than the year before and less than a third compared to the record year of 2019 with 35,65 million passengers. The fourth wave of the corona pandemic had little impact on the desire to travel during the Christmas season. A total of 1,06 million passengers took off and landed at Berlin Brandenburg Airport last December - just 160.000 fewer people than in the previous month of November 2021. During the holidays in the last two weeks of December alone, 640.000 passengers were processed. In December 2019, 2,6 million people still used the then Schönefeld and Tegel airports. The first half of 2021 had started cautiously with 1,59 passengers in the period from January to June. With the start of the summer holidays in Berlin and Brandenburg, the desire to travel increased significantly. In the second half of the year, a total of 8,36 million people traveled via BER. The month with the highest number of passengers was October 2021 with 1,7 million passengers. Air freight handled 3.100 tonnes of goods last month. The level from the pre-crisis month of December 2019 was exceeded by 300 tonnes. Overall, cargo volume last year was around 27.500 tonnes of freight. That was 7.500 tonnes less than in 2019. "Since July 2021, more than a million people have used BER Airport every month. Compared to the first half of the year, the number of passengers has increased more than fivefold. The utilisation of BER has been close to normal corona-free operation during the morning and evening peak times since July," says Aletta von Massenbach,

Around 5,32 million passengers used Hamburg Airport

By the end of 2021, 5,32 million passengers had used Hamburg Airport, 69 percent fewer than in 2019. Even though the traffic balance shows a sharp decline compared to the pre-Corona year, the development compared to the previous year is positive. After months of standstill, Hamburg Airport began to show an initial recovery in summer 2021. Traffic figures rose gradually and reached their peak during the autumn holidays. But air traffic is still a long way from normality: With the start of the fourth Corona wave, passenger numbers fell again, resulting in a traffic balance of around 2021 million passengers at Hamburg Airport in 5,32, which is below expectations. Compared to 2020, which was also affected by the Corona effects, passenger numbers rose slightly by 17 percent. With around 69.500 take-offs and landings, the total number of flight movements in 2021 increased by around 5 percent compared to the previous year (2020: approx. 66.300 take-offs and landings; 2019: approx. 155.200 take-offs and landings). Despite the positive development, the overall traffic balance remains below expectations: At the beginning of the year, Hamburg Airport had planned for 8,5 million passengers. In the first half of the year, the forecast had to be gradually reduced as demand recovered only slowly due to the pandemic-related travel restrictions. In the summer, the longed-for upturn then appeared and traffic figures rose steadily. The positive signals from the airlines also increased: the A380 returned, capacities were increased. The trend reached its peak in autumn: In October alone, Hamburg Airport recorded 953.000 passengers - that is almost a fifth of all passengers in 2021. Positive signal:

Flight attendant worked at United for 20 years under the identity of a child who died in 1979

For almost 20 years, a Brazilian worked as a flight attendant for United Airlines under a false name. Nobody noticed, but the man has now ended up in court because he is said to have simply assumed the identity of a four-year-old boy who died in a car accident in 1979. The purpose of this operation was that the 49-year-old needed US citizenship in order to be able to work as a flight attendant in the United States of America. According to a report in the Dailymail, he obtained the passport by submitting forged documents and false information to a provincial authority and was subsequently able to extend it without any problems. For almost 20 years, he pretended to be the person who died in a car accident in 1979, and at first nobody noticed. Investigators were unable to establish any close acquaintance between the long-deceased man and the impostor. The public prosecutor's office is puzzled as to how he was able to obtain a social security number of the boy who had died in the late 1990s in the 1970s and how it was accepted everywhere. But that's not all: The Brazilian even took out loans, bought a BMW on credit and even managed to get married under a false identity. He even managed to get a house and a mortgage loan. Needless to say, for 20 years nobody at United Airlines noticed that a flight attendant was employed under a false identity. Between 1998 and 2020, the man managed to have "his" US passport reissued an impressive six times. However,

Memmingen Airport scratches the million

Memmingen Airport has again approached the million mark in the past year: after a Corona-related loss in the previous year, 2021 was marked by consolidation. Now the hope is to reach the level of 2019 again this year. After a balance of 690.780 passengers in the previous year, Memmingen Airport was able to start climbing again in 2021 and recorded an increase of 980.503 percent with 42 passengers. "Despite all the restrictions, the desire and willingness to travel was clearly noticeable among our passengers," explains Airport Managing Director Ralf Schmid. The airlines flying to Memmingen have also done their best to maintain an attractive offer and even expand it to include some new destinations. The new flight connections from Memmingen to Plovdiv, the second largest city in Bulgaria, and to Lappeenranta in Finland recently celebrated their premiere. A total of 11 new destinations were added. The new year has now started with optimism, and the company hopes to reach the previous record of around 1,7 million passengers from 2019. "Corona continues to pose a major challenge, particularly with the new virus variant Omicron," says Ralf Schmid, "so we have to wait and see how things develop." Nevertheless, the company hopes that the situation will calm down in early summer. This year, in the 15th year of scheduled flight operations in Memmingen, the company is cautiously optimistic that it will be able to continue the upward trend. Last year, Sofia was the most popular destination for passengers, followed by Skopje and Palma. On March 27, Ryanair will connect Memmingen Airport with Santiago de Compostela for the first time. Then it will be

Air Italy liquidators have laid off their entire workforce

There is obviously no future for the former airline Air Italy, as the liquidators have served notice on all employees. The employment contracts were terminated with immediate effect on January 1, 2022. Severance payments were paid out. In 2016, Qatar Airways bought into the then Meridiana and had big growth plans. Around a year later, it was announced that 20 Boeing 737 Max 8s and 30 B787-9s would be added to the fleet. The Air Italy brand was introduced in 2018. The growth plans fell apart in February 2020 because there was disagreement among the shareholders about who had to inject how much capital. On February 11, 2020, it was announced that Air Italy would cease flight operations and go into voluntary liquidation. In a short transition phase, some connections were maintained with the help of wet lease equipment. The carrier was founded in 1963 as Alisarda. The name alludes to the company's headquarters on the Italian island of Sardinia. In 1990, the company merged with a Spanish company and operated as Meridiana before being renamed Air Italy in 2018. Most recently, the carrier belonged to a holding company that was 51 percent owned by Alisarda and 49 percent by Qatar Airways. The financial need for restructuring and expansion was great. The Gulf carrier announced around the time of the liquidation announcement that it still believed in the concept, but that financial resources would have to be injected by all shareholders. However, the Italian majority owners were no longer willing or able to do this. Most recently, the liquidators tried to

December 2021: Ryanair with 9,5 million passengers

The Ryanair Group counted around 2021 million passengers in December 9,5 with a capacity utilization of 81 percent. This is significantly higher than the previous year's performance, but has suffered a drop compared to November 2021. In the previous month, the Irish low-cost group had 10,2 million passengers with a capacity utilization of 86 percent. The group's latest figures also showed a slowly increasing trend in the load factor. This is also declining again in view of the renewed tightening of corona restrictions in various countries. Ryanair passenger numbers at a glance:

Next cruise corona cluster: MSC Grandiosa

The MSC Grandiosa is another cruise ship that is struggling with corona cases on board. So far, at least 45 people are said to have tested positive for the coronavirus, although no further details have been given about the variant. In recent weeks, shipping companies have been struggling with some larger clusters on board, despite the fact that mostly only fully vaccinated people with negative tests are allowed on board. This led to Aida, among others, having to prematurely cancel the departure of the Aidanova and Tui Cruises that of the Mein Schiff 6. The operator of the Grandiosa, MSC, announced, among other things, that the people who tested positive on board had been isolated and then disembarked. The company had cooperated with the health authorities and used the nearest possible port for disembarkation. A possible cancellation of the current voyage is not yet an issue - at least not for the time being.
