Austrian Airlines: Instead of going to Lviv, we went back to Vienna

The passengers of Austrian Airlines flight OS381 actually wanted to fly from Vienna to Lviv on January 17, 2022. However, this turned into a sightseeing flight, so the passengers had to get off again at the Austrian capital airport. The Embraer 195 with the registration OE-LWC was already close to its destination airport in Ukraine, but then turned around and flew back to Vienna. When asked, an Austrian Airlines spokeswoman told Aviation.Direct that landing in Lviv was not possible due to bad weather and snow on the runway. The airports of Ternopil, Ivano-Frankivsk and Uzhhorod are nearby and would have been suitable for landing the Embraer 195 aircraft. When confronted with this, the AUA media officer replied that "the airports mentioned are not operationally accessible for us". As a result, the passengers did not reach their destination of Lviv, but unexpectedly returned to Vienna-Schwechat. Those affected have been rebooked onto other connections and are expected to reach their destination Lviv as quickly as possible.

Germany shortens convalescent status to 90 days

The recovered status has been shortened to three months in Germany - the Ministry of Health justifies this with the new virus variant Omicron. The reason for this is that, due to the predominant Omicron variant, there is a much greater risk of falling ill or being a carrier after this time. The previous period of six months applied as long as the Delta variant had to be dealt with. This reclassification has serious consequences for entry from so-called high-risk areas and thus also for entry from Austria: If a corona infection occurred more than 90 days ago, you are no longer considered recovered and must go into quarantine. People who have been vaccinated twice, on the other hand, can enter the country without any restrictions for up to nine months after the second dose. Specifically, the pure recovered status is now recognized if, firstly, the positive test used to detect the disease was at least 28 days ago and, secondly, if the disease occurred no more than 90 days ago. “Net” the recovered status would therefore be valid for a good two months, as fvw.de reports.

Qatar Airways opens a new cargo connection to Munich

Munich Airport is seeing further growth in so-called cargo-only traffic. Since yesterday, Qatar Airways has been flying regularly to and from Munich with a cargo version of the Boeing 777. The route begins in Bangalore, India, and leads via Qatar's capital Doha to Munich and then on to Chicago. The return flight in exactly the reverse order brings the freighter to Munich every Tuesday. Qatar Airways operates this service on behalf of the international logistics service provider DB Schenker, thereby expanding the cargo connections from Munich to include other important destinations. "The new cargo service shows once again that Munich Airport plays an important role as a reliable component of the infrastructure and an important part of global supply chains, even in times of pandemic," the press release states.

Blue Air relies on hot water expansion from Romania

The Romanian low-cost airline Blue Air plans to focus more on warm water routes from Bucharest, Cluj and Iaşi in the 2022 summer flight schedule. The focus will be on destinations in Croatia, Greece and Spain. "Over the past two years, the freedom to fly has been taken away from all of us and flying has only been affordable for a small group of people flying to a limited number of destinations," said Chief Commercial Officer Krassimir Tanev, formerly Managing Director of the defunct Level Europe. "At Blue Air, we believe the worst times are over and, looking at booking trends, our customers expect the prohibitive restrictions to be lifted by April." Blue Air plans to serve around 2022 routes in summer 115. By comparison, there were 2019 routes in summer 71. The weekly seat capacity is to be increased by around 72 percent. The growth is to be achieved primarily with new Boeing 737 Max 8s. There are currently five in the fleet of 20 aircraft. Additional B737 Max 8s are to be taken over in the course of this year. From Bucharest, the destinations Zaragoza, Santorini, Thessaloniki, Tenerife South, Split, Skiathos, Seville, Porto, Palma de Mallorca, Ibiza, Düsseldorf, Dubrovnik, Corfu, Chania, Bordeaux, Bilbao and Alicante are to be added during the summer period of 2022. Yerevan: Fly Arna starts with two Airbus A320

The Armenian airline start-up Fly Arna will initially launch with two Airbus A320s, which will be stationed in Yerevan. The company announced that it will initially station destinations in Russia, Central Asia and the Middle East. The first flight is planned for May 2022. Fly Airna is backed by the Armenian National Interests Fund with a 51 percent stake and the Air Arabia Group with 49 percent. The first Airbus A320 aircraft are to come from Air Arabia's inventory. A third aircraft is to follow a few weeks after the start of flight operations. It has not yet been decided whether the aircraft intended for further expansion will be purchased from Air Arabia's inventory or whether used or new aircraft will be bought or leased on the open market. According to Air Arabia CEO Adel Ali, discussions are still ongoing in this regard, with offers already being received. Anif CEO David Papazian emphasized during a press conference that Fly Arna is to launch without government subsidies. Asked about the fact that the European Union still has Armenia and its aviation authority on the blacklist, the manager said that this issue should be addressed to the Civil Aviation Authority, but added that intensive discussions are already underway and that they are very close to solving this problem.

German bomb prankster arrested in Amsterdam

Talking about bombs in airports or airplanes is not a good idea at all. A 22-year-old German had to experience this at the weekend at Amsterdam-Schiphol Airport. According to a statement from the Dutch police, the traveler told a fellow passenger shortly before departure that he had a bomb with him. He apparently did not mean it seriously, but the crew reacted immediately and called the police for help. The 22-year-old had to leave the plane immediately and was arrested. The plane was delayed by around half an hour as a result of this incident. The German was questioned extensively. He and his luggage were also searched thoroughly, but nothing was found that could have posed any kind of danger. During questioning, the 22-year-old is said to have stated, among other things, that it was a joke. Of course, the police also took a close look at the plane itself. Specially trained bomb-sniffing dogs also assisted. After the all-clear was given, the flight was able to take off. The German joker was not allowed to fly, however, because he was still in custody. According to the police, it is currently unclear what punishment he could face in the Netherlands. The airline could also possibly make a claim for damages. In any case, the 22-year-old should now be aware that jokes about bombs on board are not well received in aviation and can lead to numerous immediate measures in accordance with the principle of safety first.

UFO welcomes plans to facilitate works council formation

The German flight attendants' union UFO is positive about the plans announced on Saturday by Labor Minister Hubertus Heil, which are intended to simplify the establishment of works councils. Among other things, the government member is planning to tighten criminal law. This should mean that works councils can be initiated even against the resistance of employers. In the past, for example, there was considerable resistance from management at SunExpress Germany. Legal means were also used to prevent the establishment of an employee representative body. Ultimately, this is history, because this carrier has finally ceased flight operations and is in liquidation. "Many committed colleagues have so far not dared to force the establishment of a works council, especially at small airlines. But at the Lufthansa subsidiary Eurowings Discover, where we are currently supporting the establishment of a works council, the fear of dismissal in often temporary employment contracts plays a central role," explains Daniel Kassa Mbuambi, CEO of UFO. Heil plans to have the disruption or obstruction of the establishment of works councils prosecuted as a criminal offence by the judiciary on suspicion, even without a report being filed. "The proposed tightening of criminal law will help employees to exercise their right to establish works councils and can help to take active employees out of the firing line of employers, particularly at airlines that have not yet had collective agreements," said Mbuambi.
