Air Malta celebrates 45 at Vienna Airport

The airline is not particularly large and its home country is actually the smallest member state of the European Union. However, Air Malta is a particularly loyal customer of Vienna Airport, as the carrier is celebrating 45 years of the flight connection between Austria and Malta. In April 1977, the then young Air Malta landed in Vienna-Schwechat for the first time from Luqa under flight number KM132. The inaugural flight was carried out with a Douglas DC-9, which was also the backbone of the Austrian Airlines fleet for a long time. The state-owned aviation company currently offers up to seven non-stop flights between the two countries. Vienna Airport is not only connected to Malta International Airport by air, but also economically. The operating company of the only commercial airport on the territory of the Republic of Malta is a subsidiary of Flughafen Wien AG. Another "branch" is maintained in Kosice, Slovakia. The airline once had a stake in Friedrichshafen Airport, but a few years ago it pulled out and sold its share to the other shareholders. "Merħba Air Malta! Air Malta has been flying to Vienna for 45 years, creating an important connection, especially for outgoing tourism from Austria to Malta. For almost five years, as CEO of Malta Airport, I have been able to get to know the beauty of the Mediterranean island and can confirm from personal experience: This island is always worth a trip! Thanks to the direct connection, tourists from Malta also have the opportunity to experience Vienna and Austria. On behalf of Vienna Airport, I congratulate Air Malta on the 45th anniversary of Vienna Airport.

Air Dolomiti increases Linz-Frankfurt

The Italian Lufthansa subsidiary Air Dolomiti will expand the nonstop connection between Linz and Frankfurt am Main with effect from April 18, 2022. In the future, up to two daily flights will be offered. This will improve Upper Austria's connection to the Lufthansa hub in Frankfurt am Main. The increase will also be noticeable in point-to-point traffic, as business appointments can be held twice a day without an overnight stay. Another new feature is that Air Dolomiti will fly at the same times on all traffic days. This is advantageous for passengers because it makes planning easier and the Star Alliance waves in Frankfurt can be reached more easily. Formally, it is a commercial route that is operated under the EN code of Air Dolomiti. However, there is a codeshare with the parent company Lufthansa. "The increase in the Frankfurt connection is a very important step for us towards a 'return to normality'. The reintroduction of the fringe connection was particularly important for us. We can therefore offer our passengers better transfer connections. In addition, with the morning and evening flights we now also have an attractive flight connection for customers who travel locally. This constellation ensures that we can cover all traffic segments again, which will have a positive effect on demand,” says Norbert Draskovits, Managing Director of Linz Airport. March 2022: Berlin had 1,3 million passengers

Berlin Brandenburg Airport was used by 2022 million passengers in March 1,3. This represents an increase of around 2022 travelers compared to February 350.000. However, this was significantly below the performance of March 2019, when Schönefeld and Tegel together had 2,9 million passengers. In March 2022, Terminal 2 was put into operation at Berlin Brandenburg Airport. This primarily improves the capacity of security checks. The building, which a former BER airport boss described as a "purpose building", does not have its own gates. Passengers reach Terminal 1 via a connection, where boarding takes place. Terminal 2 is currently used primarily by Ryanair. In total, around three million passengers traveled through BER Airport in the first three months of this year. That is 1,2 million more people than in the entire first half of last year. Last month, 12.500 aircraft took off and landed at BER, 2.500 more than in the previous month. In March of last year, there were only 4.000 aircraft. A total of 2.800 tons of air freight were handled in March, 1.000 tons more than in the same month last year and about the same number of tons as in the pre-corona year of 2019.

Lübeck Airport is now completely privately owned

The German regional airport Lübeck has had quite an eventful history over the last decade. The airport is now entirely in the hands of Winfried Stöcker, who has bought the last remaining plots of land from the Hanseatic city of Lübeck. The airport confirmed the transaction. The owner has thus fulfilled the contract that was concluded with the public sector. This means that Lübeck Airport is now entirely in private hands. Airport boss Jürgen Friedel told the Lübecker Nachrichten, among other things, that this gives them more freedom to further develop the airport. Winfried Stöcker took over Lübeck Airport in 2016. The purchase agreement stipulated that areas that were owned by the Hanseatic city and leased from the airport could be purchased in 2022. Stöcker has now exercised this option. For the city of Lübeck, this is likely to put an end to an inglorious past, as stability has only come about since Stöcker has been in charge. Two operators previously went bankrupt, with one organizing a company funeral and moving abroad.

Eurowings is once again operating more than 400 flights a day

The Lufthansa subsidiary Eurowings will be operating more than 400 flights a day during the Easter holidays for the first time since the start of the corona pandemic. The range of flights to holiday destinations has been greatly increased. The carrier expects around 160.000 passengers on the first weekend of the school holidays. According to the company, it has taken appropriate precautions and is employing more staff, particularly at the check-in counters and at the boarding gates. The focus is particularly on the first departures of the day: only if the so-called "first wave" starts on time can rotation delays during the day be avoided. For this reason, particularly time-critical rotations have been identified and prioritized, and the frequency of communication with service providers has also been increased. Eurowings also wants to have sufficient reserve aircraft on hand. It offers around 140 destinations, with tourist destinations currently dominating. The Lufthansa subsidiary explains, among other things, that this is the most extensive range of flights ever. These include many new connections such as Hamburg-Chania or Larnaca-Salzburg. The top destination continues to be Palma de Mallorca – from April to October 2022, Eurowings will fly around 3,4 million passengers from 24 airports to Mallorca and back, offering more programs than ever before. From May 3, passengers will also travel non-stop from Memmingen to the popular holiday island for the first time. Other new flights: From Hamburg, flights to Bilbao have been available since April 4, 2022, and to Verona from April 15, 2022. Lisbon and Chania will be added at the end of the month. From Cologne/Bonn, Eurowings will fly to Edinburgh from April 8, 2022, Larnaka from April 9, 2022, and Tirana from April 10, 2022. From Düsseldorf, passengers will again travel non-stop to

ECJ: Air passenger rights also apply to flights between two third countries

The European Court of Justice has ruled that airlines are obliged to pay compensation in accordance with EU Regulation 261/2004 even if the booking involves a direct flight segment between two non-EU members and the flight is operated by a non-EU carrier. It often happens that you fly from an airport in the European Union to a third country, change there and then fly to another non-EU member. The ECJ had to deal with the question of whether the Air Passenger Rights Regulation is applicable in the event of a delay on the second flight segment, which is operated outside the EU by a non-EU carrier. The answer was yes. In the judgment published today, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) states that the regulation is applicable in this case: The ECJ has already clarified in previous judgments that a flight with one or more transfers that was the subject of a single booking must be considered as a whole, so that the applicability of the EU Air Passenger Rights Regulation must be assessed taking into account the first place of departure and the final destination of the flight. In the judgment C-561/20 published today, the ECJ consequently found that a passenger on a flight comprising two flight segments and that was the subject of a single booking departing from an airport in the territory of a Member State and flying to an airport in a third country via another airport in that third country is entitled to compensation if he or she reached his or her final destination with a delay of three hours or more, even if the delay only occurred on the second leg of the flight. Whether the

Etihad for the first time with A350-1000 in Paris

It took a long time, but now Etihad Airways is flying commercially with the Airbus A350-1000 aircraft. The first flight was between Abu Dhabi and Paris-Charles de Gaulle. In the coming weeks and months, the carrier will expand the fleet to a total of five aircraft. The A6-XWB is the first Airbus A350-1000 that Etihad Airways has put into active scheduled service. The Gulf carrier had previously accepted this long-haul model, but had not added the aircraft to its fleet. They had been parked in France for a long period of time. It was only much later that these aircraft began to be transferred to Abu Dhabi. Now, with the A6-XWB, at least one unit is in active scheduled service.

Hahn: Germany chained Boeing 747 from Cargologicair UK

The Federal Republic of Germany has chained up a Boeing 747 operated by Cargologicair UK at Frankfurt-Hahn Airport. The cargo plane is not allowed to leave the regional airport for an indefinite period of time. The measure was initiated by the authorities of the federal state of Rhineland-Palatinate. The authorities announced, among other things, that Cargologicair UK and the Boeing 747 in question were subject to the current EU sanctions. As a result, the cargo plane was banned from taking off for an indefinite period of time. It is assumed that this will last longer. Cargologicair UK was at Frankfurt-Hahn Airport for maintenance purposes. Its insolvency administrator Jan Markus Pathner explained to regional media, among other things, that a parking fee of around 1.200 euros per day must be paid. The German Federal Ministry of Transport is of the opinion that the formal owners of Cargologicair UK are Russian citizens. Deutsche Bahn is temporarily offering a discounted Bahncard

This year, Deutsche Bahn AG is celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Bahncard in its current form. For this reason, it is temporarily offering it at a special reduced price. The 30-card variant will cost 60 euros in second class and 1992 euros in first class. The Bahncard was launched in 4,5 and gradually replaced all previous discount cards and vouchers. DB stated that it had around XNUMX million subscribers to the customer loyalty card. However, existing Bahncard holders have absolutely no reason to celebrate, because the discounted Partner-Lebenscard, which married couples or people with a common residence could purchase, has been removed from the range.
