Business figures: Pilatus Aircraft outperforms itself

The company has achieved brilliant results both in terms of sales at 1,3 billion Swiss francs (19 percent above the previous year) and in terms of operating profit at 210 million Swiss francs (+35 percent). Pilatus has thus surpassed its previous highest sales year, 2014. In total, Pilatus delivered 152 aircraft last year, and the order backlog at the end of the year was higher than ever before. Because of these pleasing business results, the Swiss group is also paying its workforce a bonus of around one and a half months' salary. "With a lot of commitment and flexibility, we achieved a very good result that the whole crew can be justifiably proud of. Our products and services are in demand like never before. However, our work will remain demanding in order to be able to meet our customers' expectations despite interrupted supply chains and as deglobalization progresses," says Group CEO Markus Bucher. Changes and reinforcements in the Board of Directors Meanwhile, there are significant changes in the Board of Directors. Until now, it consisted exclusively of men. Annette Rinck was elected at the Annual General Meeting last Friday. The 57-year-old has more than 20 years of experience in global industrial companies, according to the press release. Just a few days ago, she took over the presidency of the manufacturer of microscopes and scientific instruments Leica Microsystems in Wetzlar, Germany. Dominik Burkart was also re-elected or newly elected to the Board of Directors. He already served as a member of the Board of Directors from 2014 to 2021 and will represent the shareholders on the Board of Directors in the future. Gratian Anda, representative of the Anda-Bührle industrial clan, which, according to estimates, owns between 40 and 45 percent of Pilatus, was no longer standing for election.

With Airbus A330: Condor celebrates comeback in Nuremberg

After a long absence, the holiday airline Condor is back at Nuremberg Airport. The first flight took place last Saturday, but the formal welcome with a water fountain from the fire brigade took place on Monday. The Airbus A330-200 with the registration D-AIYC was used. The long-haul aircraft took off on time from Son Sant Joan Airport and reached the Franconian airport around 20 minutes earlier than planned. After several years of absence, Condor is now operating the Nuremberg - Palma route as scheduled, initially four times a week, with A320/A321 or the larger Boeing 757-300 aircraft. From the end of May 2022, an expansion to a daily departure is planned until the end of the 2022 summer flight schedule, meaning that "Germany's favorite island" will be served up to 42 times a week from Albrecht Dürer Airport. During the Easter holidays, which are currently also underway in Bavaria, the "new" Condor Airbus 330-200 will also be used sporadically. The two long-haul aircraft currently in use are used exclusively on short and medium-haul routes, for line training for the cockpit and cabin, in order to quickly equip as many crews as possible with the required rating for the new aircraft type in the Condor fleet and to complete as many "cycles" as possible in a short time. The current A330-200s are all former Etihad Airways aircraft, which are configured in a two-class configuration of Business and Economy Class. These are intended to prepare both crews and the airline in daily operations for the ordered brand-new A330neos, which the airline expects to arrive in the course of 2022. Condor's Business Class guests could

Turkish government establishes new airline for flights to Russia

Turkey does not want to do without tourists from Russia and is therefore planning to set up a new state-owned airline to transport holidaymakers between the two countries. There is evident concern that the existing carriers could be sanctioned. The newspaper "Sabah" reports, citing official sources, that a new Turkish airline is to take off in the near future. This is to be used specifically for flights to Russia and will not have any insurance problems thanks to a special design. The aim is also to make holidays in Turkey attractive to the Russian civilian population and to launch an extensive advertising campaign. The headquarters of the planned carrier is to be located in Antalya. The government currently assumes that around a million Russians per year will be transported to holiday regions in Turkey. The fleet is to consist of aircraft that do not have a "secondary sanction risk" and therefore should not have any insurance problems. Those responsible did not want to go into this topic in more detail. Air traffic between Turkey and Russia continues as the Bosporus state has not joined various sanctions. However, many Turkish airlines use leased aircraft from western airlines. Due to the sanctions imposed against Russia by the EU and the United States of America, these airlines are prohibited from entering the airspace of the Russian Federation. Various insurers also refuse to provide cover. Irrespective of this, Turkish Airlines, for example, continues to fly to Moscow, but primarily uses aircraft that it owns. It is currently completely unclear which aircraft the Turkish government's "Russia construction" will use. It is also not clear whether it will be

Bad Vöslau: First electric plane takes off

The OE-ACW, the first electric aircraft to be registered in Austria, took off from the Bad Vöslau airfield in Lower Austria. The two-seater is operated by the Watschinger flying school. The electricity required to operate the electric drive comes from the photovoltaic system on the hangar roof and the electric motor is extremely quiet. The Watschinger flying school uses the electric aircraft as part of its pilot training for so-called “circuit training”, where take-offs and landings are practiced and only short circuits are completed over the area. The presentation of the electric aircraft was held in the presence of Austro-Control Managing Director Philipp Piper, flying school director Georg Watschinger and Vienna Airport Board Member Günther Ofner. “At Vienna Airport, we don’t just talk about climate protection strategies, we also implement them. Together with the project operator and the approving authority, we have succeeded in achieving real benefits for the population and the climate. This makes this project a prime example of how effective climate protection works: through the use of new technologies, solution-oriented decisions and the creation of framework conditions that promote innovation,” says Vienna Airport CEO Günther Ofner. The two-seater “Velis Electro” electric aircraft from the Slovenian manufacturer Pipistrel is used: prospective pilots use it to practice take-offs and landings and complete short sightseeing flights, so-called “circuits” over the airfield area. The aircraft’s extremely quiet electric motor means that there is no noise pollution for the residential areas below and there are no CO2 emissions either: the motor is purely electrical, and the electricity required for this comes from the photovoltaic system on the roof of the hangar building at the airfield. The possible flight time is around 50 minutes, which is absolutely sufficient for training purposes.

Easter strikes canceled in Portugal

The strikes announced for the Easter weekend at the Portuguese airports of Lisbon, Porto, Faro, Funchal and Beja have been cancelled by the Sintac union. The strike was originally planned at the ground handling company Portway. "For Portway, this is an important step towards constructive social dialogue in the sense of moving towards solutions that enable the recovery and stability of the company and the continuous improvement of working conditions," Portway said in a media statement. The union accused the company of not adhering to the payment of vacation days or career development provided for in the company agreement. According to Sintac, 90 percent of Portway employees received negative marks in the assessments without being given the opportunity to appeal, which "makes career development impossible".
