Wiener Riesenrad wagon becomes a hotel room

The Ferris wheel in the Prater is considered one of the landmarks of the Austrian capital Vienna. In the future, it will be possible to spend the night in one of the cabins, as the hotel and hostel operator Superbude is marketing a carriage as a "pop-up hotel". According to the landlord, the first overnight guests will "move into" the Ferris wheel on May 20, 2022. The carriage in question has been converted accordingly and, according to Superbude, is to be the world's first floating hotel room. The aim is to score points with a good view and included breakfast. In the future, it will be possible to book this unusual accommodation via the provider's homepage. This is not yet possible at the moment. Superbude offers other quite bizarre overnight accommodation options in Frankfurt and Vienna, among others. It is apparently aimed at people who are looking for an extraordinary "kick".

Graz: Free airport shuttle has started operations

Since Monday, there has been a new airport shuttle in Graz, which is initially being evaluated as part of a six-month test operation. This is intended to transport passengers between the airport and public transport stations, thus closing a gap. Use is initially free of charge. The trial operation is part of the Graz project "Move2Zero" and is intended to be operated on a demand-based basis. The concept is most comparable to a so-called on-demand bus. In concrete terms, this means that you have to register your travel request. According to Graz Holding, only vehicles with electric drives are used. The automated charging system "Matrix Charging" from the Graz-based company Easelink is also used. The on-demand shuttle takes passengers from selected public transport stops to the airport and back, initially until mid-October 2022, emission-free, on-demand and free of charge. In contrast to classic scheduled services, the shuttle does not run according to a timetable, but when it is called. It can be called via www.grz-shuttle.at or via the QR codes placed at the stops. After the start and destination stops, the number of people and the luggage have been announced, the shuttle will be at the pick-up point in just a few minutes. The on-demand shuttle runs daily from 4.30:20.00 a.m. to 5:600 p.m. and serves the stops at Graz Airport, Graz-Feldkirchen Airport S-Bahn station (line S620), Abtissendorf Flughafenstraße regional bus stop (bus line XNUMX/XNUMX) and Amedia Express Graz Airport Hotel. A battery-electric shuttle is used: the Mercedes e-Vito. The e-Vito is charged using the automated conductive charging system "Matrix Charging" from Easelink. As soon as the shuttle parks in front of the arrivals hall at the airport, the so-called Matrix Charging Connector automatically lowers from the vehicle underbody and connects to the charging plate on the parking lot floor. Seasonal route: Croatia Airlines starts Zurich-Dubrovnik

On June 10, 2022, Croatia Airlines will start a seasonal non-stop connection between Zurich and Dubrovnik. This will be operated with medium-haul Airbus A319 jets. On board, specialties from the home country of the Star Alliance member will be served in economy and business class. Croatia Airlines offers a total of five different fares on this route. According to the airline, the aim is to appeal to as many passengers as possible and to enable the trip to be as individualized as possible. Dubrovnik is a popular holiday resort on the Mediterranean. Numerous airlines fly to the local airport seasonally. In view of the strong competition from Ryanair at its home base in Zagreb, Croatia Airlines is working on a decentralized strategy. It is increasingly stationing aircraft outside the capital and adding further routes in the W pattern.

Maldives: Hotel operator acquires second de Havilland DHC-6

In the Maldives, Soneva Holdings, which operates numerous luxury hotels, will be using a de Havilland DHC-6-300 seaplane to transport guests from Malé to hotels on the islands. The company is cooperating with Manta Air, as this is formally a commercial passenger transport operation and requires an AOC and operating license. However, the aircraft is leased from Soneva Holdings. According to CH-Aviation.com, the turboprop aircraft is 45,5 years old and is currently in Cairns, Australia, as VH-FIW. Maintenance work is being carried out there. The DHC-6-300 will soon be transferred to the Maldives. Before it is used as a hotel shuttle for the first time, the aircraft will be fitted with a VIP cabin. This aircraft was most recently used by Dimonim Air and is owned by the leasing company Montrose Global. It is not the first seaplane that Soneva Holdings has organized. In 2018, a Viking Air DHC-6-200, registered 8Q-RAL, was also leased from Montrose Global. The aircraft was originally operated by Trans Maldivian Airways on behalf of the hotel group, but has since been handed over to Manta Air.

From June 12, 2022: Regiojet takes on Brno-Vienna Airport

The private railway company Regiojet will serve Vienna-Schwechat Airport from June 12, 2022. Three daily train journeys are planned from Brno via Vienna Central Station to Austria's largest airport and back. The Czech city of Brno is currently suboptimally connected to Vienna Airport. The service from the local airport is limited, so many travelers currently drive to Schwechat by car. A few weeks ago, politicians presented the project of direct trains between Brno and Vienna Airport. Regiojet is now creating facts and taking them on board. From Brno, as Brno is called in Czech, for example, there will be an early train that will reach Vienna Airport at around 6:00 a.m. This will enable the majority of the so-called morning wave flights to be reached. This will lead to an operational change, because until now the Prague-Vienna train has spent the night in Vienna Central Station. In the future, it will travel from Vienna Airport to Brno in the evening and from there will start the early morning journey to Vienna Airport. Regiojet explained to Aviation.Direct that in most cases these are extensions of the existing Prague-Vienna connection. These no longer end at Vienna Central Station, but at Vienna-Schwechat Airport. It is still unclear whether passengers will be allowed to travel between the city and the airport. If this is the case, passengers would have another choice in addition to the City Airport Train, the express train (including regional express), the Vienna Airport Lines and the Railjet trains. When asked about the Budapest trips, Regiojet explained that these will continue to be offered. The extension to Vienna-Schwechat Airport affects the trains coming from Prague, which have so far stopped at

Quarterly figures: car rental company Sixt made strong gains

The German car rental company Sixt SE was able to increase its group revenue again in the first quarter of the current year. It took in 580,8 million euros, 15 percent higher than the figure for the first quarter of 2019. In direct comparison with the same period last year, the Sixt Group had an increase in revenue of 76,1 percent. However, the first three months of last year were severely affected by the corona pandemic, so that demand for rental cars was rather subdued. As a result, the company posted a loss of 2021 million euros in the first quarter of 13,7. Most recently, earnings before taxes were 93,5 million euros, significantly higher than in the same period in 2019. At that time, the bottom line was 40,1 million euros. Sixt says it was able to expand its fleet by 35 percent year-on-year. It currently has around 125.000 vehicles that group-owned companies offer for rental. The fleets of franchisees are not included in the number of units mentioned. The management of Sixt SE currently assumes that there will be very high demand, especially in the second and third quarters of the current financial year. This is primarily due to the fact that private holiday trips are increasing again this year. Supply is also tight due to the fact that vehicle manufacturers have delivery backlogs. This has an impact on prices, which are rather high this year. Sixt assumes that this will be a long-term trend.

Majority sold to South African for just $3,16

The Takatso consortium only had to spend US$3,16 to buy the 51 percent majority stake in South African Airways from the South African government. The deal was formally completed last week. However, the investor will have to put a lot of money into the ailing company to keep it in the air permanently. The carrier has been financially struggling for over a decade. Even before the corona pandemic, the government had to repeatedly provide cash injections, otherwise South African Airways would have been bankrupt. The crisis hit the company even harder. It had to enter into creditor protection proceedings. Takatso, consisting of local aircraft lessor Global Aviation and Harith General Partners, a pan-African investor in African infrastructure, was confirmed as the new majority owner of South African Airways last June. But it was not until the end of last week that the South African government announced the details of the deal. The government now holds 49 percent of the airline. Initially, the new majority owner will invest around 186 million US dollars in South African Airways, according to official figures. Although government officials say that the state will provide further money in the future, an internal document from the South African Ministry of Finance was published in local media. It states that Takatso reserves the right to decide whether current liabilities must be paid by the government.
