Belgium: General strike shuts down public rail services

In Belgium, a general strike has brought large parts of the country to a standstill. Among other things, rail traffic was largely halted yesterday evening. In large parts of the country, only around a quarter of trains will be running by the end of the strike on Tuesday evening, reports Reisevor9. A replacement timetable is in force. In the provinces of Liège, Luxembourg and Namur, no trains are running at all due to a lack of staff. Deutsche Bahn's ICE connections between Brussels and Frankfurt am Main will also be cancelled on Tuesday, according to the railway. In addition, a large number of Thalys trains are expected to be affected. Several public sector unions have called for a strike today. The reasons behind this include general dissatisfaction with working conditions and demands for higher incomes. Restrictions are expected in waste disposal, administration and education, among other areas.

Tunisia drops quarantine requirement for unvaccinated people

Tunisia has relaxed the entry requirements for people without full vaccination protection. Anyone who is at least 18 years old and not or not fully vaccinated no longer has to go into quarantine after crossing the border. All that is required is a negative corona test. These must be PCR tests that are no more than 48 hours old or rapid antigen tests that are no more than 24 hours old. The certificates, which must be issued by a health authority and have a QR code, must be presented when checking in on the arrival flight. Children and young people under the age of 18 are not required to provide proof; fully vaccinated passengers only have to show their vaccination certificate. Vaccination protection is considered complete if the last dose was received at least 14 days before arrival, or 28 days if the Johnson & Johnson vaccine was used, as Check24 reports.

From Wednesday: Austrian Airlines drops the masks

Austrian Airlines will drop FFP1 masks from Wednesday, June 2022, 2. Passengers will only have to wear mouth and nose protection if there is a corresponding order from another country. This is the case, for example, from/to Germany. From Wednesday, the Austrian federal government will also suspend the FFP2 mask requirement on public transport, including train stations, stops and airport terminals, for an initial period of three months. The Vienna state government, however, does not support this. Since there is no commercial airport in the city of Vienna, Vienna's special route is not relevant for passengers. Austria's largest airport is in Lower Austria. From June 1, 2022, Austrian Airlines will only insist on wearing mouth and nose protection if, for example, there is a corresponding instruction from the destination country by means of a NOTAM. Otherwise, crews and passengers can fly maskless. "From June 1.6.2022, 23.8.2022, according to the current Covid Measures Ordinance, the mask requirement on board public transport and thus also on aircraft will be suspended. For Austrian Airlines passengers, this means that wearing an FFP2 mask or mouth-nose protection on board is no longer mandatory until August 2, 1. Of course, passengers can continue to wear a mask if they wish. On flights to countries that still require a mask requirement (FFP2022 or mouth-nose protection), passengers and crew members must continue to wear a mask," explains an Austrian Airlines spokesperson. A few days ago, competitor Ryanair announced that it would no longer require masks to be worn on flights to Austria from June XNUMX, XNUMX. AUA's parent company Lufthansa has meanwhile instructed crews to comply with the mask requirement ordered by the government there on flights to Germany.

KLM also starts with premium economy

The Dutch airline will equip its long-haul jets with up to 28 premium economy seats. KLM is following the major cabin trend and plans to offer them on North American routes from the end of July. The new seating class at KLM will have between 21 and 28 seats, depending on the aircraft type. The seats are wider and offer more legroom at 38 inches or 97 centimeters, have a larger screen, USB and power socket, a footrest and can be reclined further than the economy class seats. Those traveling in this class are also allowed to board first and carry more luggage. "Based on extensive market research, we expect a lot from the new Premium Comfort class. The product meets the needs of business and leisure travelers. It strengthens KLM's position as a global network airline with an attractive and differentiated offering: World Business Class, Premium Comfort and Economy Class," says Boet Kreiken, Executive Vice President Customer Experience at KLM. The new cabin class also offers more specialized catering. On intercontinental flights, one or two meals are served depending on the length of the flight. There is always a choice between a meal with meat or fish and a vegetarian meal. After the meal, there is a selection of coffee, tea, liquor and ice cream. Snacks and cocktails are also available. The meals will focus on dishes that were previously successful in World Business Class, the carrier said in a press release. Passengers will also receive more flexible baggage regulations and priority check-in and boarding.

Sri Lanka lacks kerosene

Sri Lanka is suffering from a serious economic and currency crisis. Kerosene is in short supply - the government is asking airlines to stop refueling locally. Due to a lack of tourism revenue during the pandemic, the economy in Sri Lanka has collapsed. Everything is scarce and expensive locally - the currency crisis is increasingly endangering oil imports into the country. The result: airlines are no longer to refuel in Sri Lanka for the time being. The government is calling on airlines to carry enough fuel for the return flight on flights to Sri Lanka or to plan a refueling stop elsewhere. This is reported by the German aviation portal Aero. The supply situation in the country is also posing challenges for SriLankan Airlines. The airline currently gets its fuel for long-haul flights mainly in India and Dubai.

MUC expects increased traffic during the Pentecost holidays

Munich Airport is expecting one of the strongest travel waves of the year with the start of the Bavarian Whitsun holidays. According to the airlines' registrations so far, almost 3 flights to and from around 19 destinations are planned for the period from June 15.000 to June 190 inclusive. This is more than three times as many take-offs and landings as in the Whitsun holidays last year and corresponds to three quarters of the volume from the pre-crisis year of 2019. In view of the significant increase in traffic, passengers should plan a sufficient time buffer and be in the terminal around two and a half hours before departure, the airport said in a press release. In terms of travel destinations, passengers from Munich can once again choose from the entire range of classic European holiday destinations. Most departures in European traffic during the Whitsun holidays are to Italy with 727 take-offs. Close behind is Spain with 694 take-offs, with Palma de Mallorca still the most frequently flown holiday destination (164 take-offs). 441 aircraft will take off for Greece during the Whitsun holidays. 430 aircraft will take off for France, and 374 will depart for Turkey. 154 aircraft will take off for Portugal. Munich is now well connected on long-haul routes again. Destinations in the USA in particular are frequently served: during the Whitsun holidays, travellers can choose from a total of 337 departures to 13 American destinations. A further 66 flights will go to three Canadian destinations. Three attractive destinations are also on the flight schedule in South and Central America: Rio de Janeiro in Brazil, Cancun in Mexico and Punta Cana in the Dominican Republic. A total of 34 flights will take off from Munich.

German travel agencies are registering high and short-term demand

A recent survey has shown that many travel agencies in Germany are currently experiencing extremely high demand. However, bookings are still being made at short notice. But not all agencies can benefit from the current boom. The portal Counter-vor-9 conducted a survey of 300 travel agencies. 27 percent of those surveyed stated that there is currently a very high volume of bookings. 49 percent said that it should be rather high. But not everyone is benefiting from the current high demand, as numerous agencies also stated that they are already feeling dampening factors due to increased prices. 70 percent of travel agencies stated that bookings are still being made at short notice. For 12 percent of survey participants, bookings are even said to be made very shortly before departure. Longer-term bookings are said to continue to be rare. The factors for this are different, but to put it simply, a mixture of the unclear situation as to what will happen with Corona in autumn 2022 and the war in Ukraine.

Also because of Corona: Premium economy increasingly in demand

A piece of luxury above the clouds: More and more airlines are adding premium economy products to their range of products. For a reasonable surcharge, they offer passengers more space, more storage space and often other benefits. The US airline Delta Air Lines, for example, is scoring points with its guests with the so-called Delta Premium Select class. In addition to noticeably more legroom, footrests and larger screens, it is also intended to impress passengers with special amenity kits and noise-cancelling headphones. This summer, aircraft with superior class will be used on almost all of the airline's transatlantic routes - including the connections from Munich to Detroit and Atlanta, from Frankfurt to New York-JFK, Detroit and Atlanta and from Zurich to New York-JFK. Several companies and organizations in the industry can confirm the trend towards premium classes. While economy class is still the most frequently booked cabin class, the online travel company Skyscanner is recording a continuous increase in bookings for premium economy class. The more comfortable category is becoming increasingly popular, especially on long-haul flights such as to Sydney or New York. According to a recent survey by Skyscanner, 49 percent of Germans surveyed plan to spend more money on their vacation this year. 19 percent of them want to invest specifically in flight upgrades. "If you like to stretch your legs and don't want to fight for elbow room with the person sitting next to you, an upgrade offers significantly more comfort," explains Skyscanner travel expert Naomi Hahn. "The good news is that a seat in Premium Economy costs on average up to 20 percent less this year than before the pandemic. My
