UFO rejects amendment on EU emissions trading in aviation

The Independent Flight Attendants Organisation (UFO) is critical of the amendment proposed by the European Parliament's Environment Committee to expand the EU Emissions Trading System (EU ETS). From the union's point of view, this would lead to a shift in traffic flows and the corresponding emissions to countries outside the EU. "The proposal to expand the European emissions trading system would have serious consequences for Europe as an aviation location and its employees, because it would lead to an unequal distribution to the detriment of European carriers. For this reason, we appeal to EU parliamentarians to reject this amendment at all costs," said Daniel Kassa Mbuambi, Chairman of the Board of UFO. Not only UFO, but also other German and European trade associations and unions in aviation see not only the danger of distortion of competition and thus, ultimately, the destruction of European jobs, but also the prevention of the effective limitation of CO2 emissions, as emissions would be removed from the EU's regulatory sovereignty. "We now urgently need a fair arrangement at international level within the framework of the CORSIA agreement in order to make a truly sustainable contribution and avoid carbon leakage. Special regulatory paths for a limited geographical area will not help to achieve the climate goals set. Rather, the distortion of competition resulting from the amendment will ensure that good European jobs disappear and are created under worse conditions outside the EU. The EU Parliament must take action here," adds Kassa Mbuambi. According to the amendment approved by the Environment Committee to expand emissions trading in air transport, this would apply to all flights leaving the EU. So far, only flights on routes within the EU have been recorded. After the decision in the Environment Committee,

Delays and cancellations: works meetings at Austrian Airlines

On Thursday, June 2, 2022, the works councils of the flying and commercial-technical staff of Austrian Airlines will inform their colleagues. This will result in cancellations and delays both on the evening of June 1 and all day on June 2, 2022, the company confirmed. "On the management side, we fundamentally support the holding of works meetings, but the timing and manner of holding them just before the Whitsun weekend with high travel volumes is very irritating. An event in hybrid form or with two dates would have led to fewer disruptions and incomprehension on the part of our customers," Austrian Airlines COO Francesco Sciortino told Aviation.Direct. "We apologize to our passengers for the inconvenience. The company is making every effort to keep the impact as minimal as possible." According to the employee representatives, these are regular works meetings. The works council must update employees at least twice a year. Due to the Corona pandemic, the schedule could not be kept in physical form. Now they are meeting in person again and will have a lot to discuss. However, there will be delays and cancellations on both 1 and 2 June 2022. An Austrian Airlines spokesperson told Aviation.Direct: "The works councils for the flying and commercial-technical staff are planning works meetings from 2 a.m. on 2022 June 09.00, so unfortunately there will be delays and cancellations in the Austrian Airlines flight program on the evening of 1 and during 2 June 2022. From a current perspective, 14 of these scheduled rotations are on the short-haul route.

Pandemic still has winter tourism firmly in its grip

In the past winter season, noticeably fewer holidays were taken in Austria than before the pandemic. There is still a large gap in the balance sheet of accommodation providers. In total, the operators of hotels, guest houses and holiday apartments recorded 52,7 million overnight stays. This was 27,8 percent less than in the last normal season before the coronavirus crisis (2018/19), according to preliminary data from Statistics Austria. Despite the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the majority of bookings came from abroad: According to the statistics, three quarters of all overnight stays in winter 2021/22 were by foreign guests. In total, eight million guests decided to stay in Austria in winter 2021/22. Figures picked up speed from February "After a difficult start to the 2021/22 tourist winter season due to the nationwide lockdown in November/December 2021 and the rapid spread of the delta and omicron variants of the coronavirus, overnight stays picked up speed again from February 2022," summarized Statistics Austria Director General Tobias Thomas. Overall, the past winter season "was significantly more positive than the previous winter season, which was almost completely canceled due to the corona pandemic." The 2018/19 winter season, which was the strongest to date with 72,9 million overnight stays, was missing around 20 million bookings last winter. This year in April, the last month of the season, 7,5 million overnight stays and 2,3 million arrivals were recorded, according to the information.

Reimbursement of hotel costs – Opodo gave in after the VKI lawsuit

The travel agent denied responsibility for refunds in the event of a trip cancellation. After a lawsuit supported by the VKI, Opodo finally gave in. Who should I contact? - This is the question asked by many consumers who have booked their trip through a travel agent - such as Opodo - and are waiting for their refund, for example because of a trip cancellation. The travel agent sometimes refers to the booked hotel or airline, which in turn refers to the travel agent. Experience has shown that this leads to great frustration - as was the case with a family that turned to the Association for Consumer Information (VKI). A consumer wanted to spend the 2020 summer vacation in Mallorca with his wife and two children and booked the flight and hotel through the agent Opodo at the beginning of 2020. The corona pandemic thwarted these vacation plans: At the planned time of travel, there was a travel warning for Mallorca, the hotel was closed and the flight was canceled by the airline. A year later, the airline finally paid back the cost of the flight tickets, but the hotel costs of 1.750 euros were still pending. The hotel referred to Opodo as the contractual partner. However, contacting Opodo proved difficult and the company repeatedly stressed that Opodo only acts as an intermediary between the provider and the customer and that the refund therefore comes primarily from the booked hotel. Only when the hotel makes the refund to Opodo can Opodo pass this amount on to the consumer. The VKI is therefore supporting the consumer's lawsuit against the company behind the Opodo brand on behalf of the Ministry of Social Affairs.

Whitsun holidays: Nuremberg Airport expects a rush

With around 240.000 passengers expected, Nuremberg Airport can return to pre-pandemic levels during the Whitsun holidays. For comparison: in 2019, 243.000 holidaymakers used the airport during the holidays. The number of destinations has also returned to its previous strength, at almost 70. Around 1.800 take-offs and landings are coordinated, which corresponds to an average of 105 per day. The busiest travel day will probably be the last Friday of the two holiday weeks (June 17). Top direct destinations from Nuremberg are Antalya and Mallorca. This is followed by the major hub airports of Frankfurt, Istanbul and Amsterdam with onward flights to the USA, Thailand or South America, for example. The holiday regions of Izmir, Heraklion and Thessaloniki as well as Hurghada in Egypt are also particularly popular. The planes are full again, but even those who decide at short notice have a last-minute chance of a vacation under blue skies: There are still free seats on the planes to Ibiza, Chania on Crete, Faro in Portugal and Lamezia Terme in Italy. Always worth a trip: Paris, the city of love, where flights are now also being made to the Orly city airport. Plan enough time in advance In order to be prepared for the increased number of passengers, the airport's operational areas are increasing their staff, for example at check-in or baggage handling, as Nuremberg Airport announced in a press release. Due to the high volume of travel, travelers are asked to plan enough time. Especially during the holiday weeks, it is recommended to be at the airport at least two hours before departure, as waiting times can be expected both at check-in and at the security check. The catering industry is also preparing for the rush.

Summer holidays 2022: Paderborn expects 100.000 passengers

The German airport Paderborn/Lippstadt expects around 2022 passengers during the 100.000 summer holidays. The "school break" lasts six weeks in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia. During the school holidays, according to Paderborn/Lippstadt airport, the destinations Antalya (Corendon, SunExpress and Pegasus), Feuerteventura (Freebird Europe), Gran Canaria (Freebird Europe), Heraklion (Corendon Europe, Freebird Europe), Hurghada (Air Cairo), Kos (Freebird Europe), Palma de Mallorca (Eurwings, Freebird Europe) and Rhodes (Corendon Europe, Freebird Europe) will be available to choose from. We are currently very well on track with regard to the increased forecast for passenger numbers. The summer holidays will make an important contribution to this," emphasizes airport managing director Roland Hüser. According to the airport, passengers do not have to fear that there will be problems with handling at Paderborn/Lippstadt Airport. The service provider for flight security checks has already taken sufficient precautions with regard to the expected capacities. In previous irregularities at neighboring airports this year, the home port has already proven its ability to accommodate additional aircraft at short notice. In the pre-Corona year of 2019, 114.056 passengers used Paderborn/Lippstadt Airport for their departure and landing as part of their summer vacation.
