Too few pilots and new system: France expects delays and cancellations

The French Civil Aviation Authority expects that there will be delays in the airspace throughout the year. The reason for this is that the DSNA air traffic control has too few controllers and has also introduced a new system. The combination of these two circumstances means that, among other things, the Reims control center is only available to a limited extent. Installation of the new air traffic control system began in April 2022. The timing has been criticized by airlines, taking into account that air traffic is just getting started. Florian Guillermet, head of the French Civil Aviation Authority, assumes that improvements will not occur until next year. Due to the lack of capacity, numerous flights will be diverted to German airspace, especially during the peak season in summer 2022. This may lead to longer flight times at times and the "problem" has been at least partially "shifted abroad". It remains to be seen whether the DFS can handle the additional volume. However, Guillermet defends the decision to switch to a modern system. During a Eurocontrol webinar, he said, among other things, that France is still working with the old paper system. This is said to mean that the controllers cannot be as productive as those in countries that have already switched to modern computer systems. "That is why we made the crazy decision to update the system just before the summer, which could lead to significant disruptions," said the head of the authority. Although French air traffic control has hired many new controllers, according to Guillermet, the number of staff is still at "historically high levels".

Italy: No 3G ID required for entry

Since Wednesday, June 1, 2022, Italy no longer requires proof of 3G for entry. The controls, which were previously only carried out sporadically at best, are no longer applicable. The Italian Ministry of Health announced that the measure will not be extended. This means that people from all countries can enter the country again without a test, vaccination or recovery. The mask requirement has also been gradually relaxed, as it only applies on public transport, health facilities and schools. However, this could be lifted on public transport and in schools on June 15, 2022. The last word has not yet been spoken, so official announcements from the Italian Ministry of Health must be awaited. In Italy, regional governments have the option of imposing stricter measures. In the past, Sardinia and Sicily have occasionally made use of this. Therefore, you should continue to find out about possible regional special regulations.

Corendon goes long-haul with Airhub-A330

The Turkish airline Corendon Airlines is taking an Airbus A330-300 from the Maltese Air Hub Airlines on a wet lease. The long-haul aircraft will be used on various European routes from Antalya for eighteen months. Intercontinental flights are planned in the 2022/23 winter schedule. "I am pleased to announce our new cooperation with Corendon Airlines, which will help our new partners expand their range of connections between Turkey and Europe and other destinations around the world. Our partnership is of particular importance in view of the increase in passenger traffic in the upcoming post-pandemic recovery phase. The long-term agreement with Corendon Airlines is the result of our team's tireless efforts to provide our customers with the highest quality of service. We look forward to welcoming Corendon Airlines guests on board," said Haris Coloman, CEO and Accountable Manager at Airhub Airlines. During the current summer period, the Maltese carrier will operate numerous routes from Antalya, including routes to Germany, on behalf of Corendon Airlines. In the 2022/23 winter flight schedule, the long-haul service will then be launched. "With this aircraft, we will take the first steps of Comfort Class, our service concept with wider and much more comfortable seats, in contrast to what is known and common practice, for our customers on our existing dense European routes. Although only short rotations are planned for the current summer season, we believe that by using this aircraft on our long-haul flights planned for the short season, we will reach the next level of our services together with our partner. We wish everyone a good season," said Mine.

Tuifly keeps passengers waiting for their flights for days

The German holiday airline Tuifly is currently experiencing massive delays. For example, holidaymakers who wanted to fly from Fuerteventura to Frankfurt am Main had to wait a whopping two days for their return flight. The carrier believes that the ACMI market, which was cleared out due to the Champions League final, played a certain role. The main reason behind this, however, is that several Tuifly aircraft were AOG and the repairs took longer than expected. A company spokesperson also explained that handling capacities at some Greek airports are currently limited, so delays can easily occur here. Those holidaymakers who actually wanted to fly from Fuerteventura to Frankfurt am Main on May 27, 2022 have had very little of this. At first it looked like a routine trip home under flight number X32139. But soon the 160 or so passengers were given the bad news that the flight would not take place until the next day and that they would be taken to a hotel. The next day there was another bus shuttle to the airport. Check-in and security checks were carried out as usual. Then, according to those affected, nothing happened for six hours. Only then did two young Tui employees, accompanied by security guards, appear and deliver the more bad news: there would be no flights today either - they would collect their luggage and return to a hotel. A wet lease partner had pulled out at short notice. Affected passengers criticize the fact that they were not provided with enough information by Tuifly or the tour operator Tui. A simple, handwritten note stuck to the counter at the hotel reception was said to have been the only source of information for a long time.

Klagenfurt Airport: Chamber of Commerce sulks after the decision

The Carinthian Chamber of Commerce is clearly not happy with the fact that the state government has rejected the application by State Councillor Martin Gruber (ÖVP) to buy back Klagenfurt Airport. The decision has been acknowledged, according to a press release. Only recently, WK President and KBV Supervisory Board member Jürgen Mandl spoke out unequivocally in favour of exercising the call option. After more than 14 hours of deliberation, the state government decided by a majority not to exercise it. The KBV Supervisory Board decision has thus been more or less undone. "The state government, which is now responsible for the future fate of the airport, would be well advised to convince the new owner that the economy in Carinthia does not need colourful picture books, but active flight connections to the important transport hubs in Europe. The investor has failed to provide this for years, while airports in the surrounding area have massively expanded their position," demands Mandl.

Düsseldorf: Leav Aviation helps out at Tuifly

The German holiday airline Tuifly is currently experiencing an operational problem. The carrier is attracting negative attention with extremely long delays and cancellations. Some aircraft are unavailable due to technical defects. Now the young Leav Aviation is also helping out. The carrier from Cologne received official approval as an airline just a few weeks ago. Initially, it flew on a wet lease basis for the Air France-KLM subsidiary Transavia. It also operated flights from Amsterdam on behalf of Corendon Dutch Airlines. Most recently, it flew individual rotations for Corendon Europe from its home base in Cologne/Bonn. The D-ANDI has since been transferred to Düsseldorf. From there, it handles wet lease orders for Tuifly. The only Airbus A3 from Leav Aviation is used under X320 flight numbers to Heraklion, Rhodes and Corfu, for example. How long it will fly for Tuifly is currently not clear.
