Pilatus opens a new paint shop in the USA

Aircraft manufacturer Pilatus has opened a new paint shop in the United States of America. It is located in Broomfield (Colorado) and is designed to meet the sharp increase in demand for the PC-24 and PC-12NGX types. Pilatus has invested around 15 million US dollars and created 25 jobs. The paint shop is located at the site of Pilatus' US subsidiary, which has been based in Broomfield, Colorado, for 26 years. "We are proud to be able to strengthen our presence here in Colorado and increase our number of employees in order to meet the growing demand in the North and South American markets," said Thomas Bosshard, CEO of the Pilatus subsidiary, Pilatus Business Aircraft Ltd.

Danger of strikes at Lufthansa: Cockpit Association initiates ballot

There is renewed friction between the unionized Lufthansa pilots and the management, because according to an internal paper, the Cockpit Association is preparing a ballot vote on possible strikes at Lufthansa and Lufthansa Cargo. Negotiations on a new wage agreement have been considered deadlocked for some time. There is said to have been no new offer from the employers' side at first. The Cockpit Association has terminated the existing agreement as of June 30, 2022. Among other things, the demands are five percent more pay and annual increases that should be based on inflation. There are also disagreements about how many aircraft should be operated under the group collective agreement. Previous contracts stated that there must be at least 325 aircraft. In the wake of the Corona pandemic, Lufthansa terminated this agreement and is currently building a "cheaper platform", colloquially known as "Cityline II". This is a thorn in the side of employee representatives. The Cockpit Association and Lufthansa still hope that a compromise can be found at the negotiating table. However, indefinite pilot strikes during peak travel times are no longer completely out of the question, as employee representatives have already initiated a ballot vote.

Night trains: Alpen-Sylt-Express stops operating

The private night train operator Alpen-Sylt-Express is ceasing all trips at the end of July 2022. The RDC subsidiary justifies the decision by saying that there is a lack of carriages and that the sharp increase in operating costs has made the night train uneconomical. The company offers trips to Sylt from Salzburg and Switzerland. It only started in 2020 and is a subsidiary of the US Railroad Development Corporation. "Unfortunately, we have to inform you that it is with a heavy heart that we have decided to end the Alpen-Sylt Night Express season early and cancel all trips from July 29, 2022," the company said. "All previous trips, including the trip on July 23, will take place as planned. We would have been very happy to welcome you back on board our Alpen-Sylt Night Express this summer. Unfortunately, we are currently faced with circumstances that no longer allow us to offer our night train with the quality and reliability that you can expect from us." Seasonal service from Basel and Salzburg was only reactivated at the end of May 2022. The trains were previously coupled together near Gemünden and ran together to Sylt. Trips were offered on Fridays and Sundays. The trains have sleeping, couchette and seating cars.

From September 1, 2022: Spain introduces free train tickets

The Spanish government wants to support commuters with free train tickets from September 1, 2022. However, not everyone will benefit from this offer, as it is aimed at people who have already used monthly tickets, for example. Spain wants to make free tickets available to this group of people by the end of the year. It is not yet entirely clear whether monthly tickets can then generally be obtained free of charge or whether only holders of season tickets will benefit. The government justifies the measure with the sharp rise in inflation. The free tickets are only valid for connections with Cercanías (Madrid agglomeration), Rodalíes de Catalunya (Catalan suburban trains) and Media Distancia regional trains - which belong to the Renfe group. Single tickets and tickets for long-distance trains and trains operated by other carriers are excluded from the offer. Tourists will probably not be able to take advantage of such an offer; it will be an offer aimed at Spanish residents.

German air traffic control sees “rapid recovery after Corona”

In the first half of 2022, around 1,2 million flight movements were carried out in accordance with instrument rules in the Federal Republic of Germany. This corresponds to around 76 percent of the volume that was recorded in the same period in 2019, according to the German Air Traffic Control. The DFS expects that the currently high demand summer will lead to a further recovery. It is currently assumed that around 2022 percent of the value that was recorded in 85 can be achieved in 2019 as a whole. Managing Director Arndt Schoenemann sees "a rapid increase in traffic after the corona crisis". In some places, the airspace is already above the pre-crisis level. The German Air Traffic Control cites the airspace above 7.500 meters monitored by the Karlsruhe Center as an example. This is also being used more frequently because the French air traffic control has reduced capacity due to a system change. The DFS also emphasized that space has to be made for military flights again and again. This has a negative impact on the performance of the airspace for civil flights. However, this should not be a problem yet, as the current volume is still well below the 2019 level.

Ravn Alaska wants to convert Dash fleet to hydrogen propulsion

At the Farnborough Air Show, Ravn Alaska airline signed a letter of intent to convert 30 de Havilland Dash 8s to hydrogen-powered aircraft. The regional airline currently operates eleven turboprop aircraft, including ten Dash 8-100s and one Dash 8-300. In the future, the company plans to switch from kerosene to hydrogen-powered aircraft. The company has chosen ZeroAvia's project for this purpose. Initial test flights are expected to take place shortly, but certification will take several years. "We want to be at the forefront of zero-emission aviation as soon as FAA-certified technologies come to market. ZeroAvia is making great strides to bring hydrogen-electric propulsion to Alaska's skies, and we look forward to working together to make green flight a reality," said Rob McKinney, Chief Executive Officer of Ravn Alaska. ZeroAvia will provide Ravn with its ZA2000 modular hydrogen fuel cell engine with 2-5 megawatts of power, which is currently under development. It is designed for turboprop aircraft with 40 to 90 seats and is scheduled to enter service in 2026. The targeted range is more than 500 NM.

Statistics: This is how Austrian airports got through the first five months of 2022

In the first five months of 2022, Austrian commercial airports counted a total of 8.024.070 passengers on 76.309 flights. With 6.837.029 travelers, the vast majority came from Vienna-Schwechat Airport. In terms of flight movements, the capital's airport also had significantly more movements than all other federal state airports combined, with 62.877 takeoffs or landings. In Salzburg and Innsbruck, it can be seen that significantly more winter sports enthusiasts flew to Austria again in winter 2021/23. Both airports generate the majority of their annual turnover from incoming business in the cold season. With only 18.738 passengers on 334 flights, Klagenfurt had the fewest travelers in the first five months. Linz performed significantly better with 50.949 passengers on 1.182 movements, but the volume was still well below the volume it had before the corona pandemic. At both airports, the situation was made more difficult by the fact that scheduled flights were repeatedly temporarily suspended.
