Construction work will start as early as 2023: tram to Palma de Mallorca Airport is coming

The journey from Mallorca airport to the capital Palma is to be made more comfortable and environmentally friendly thanks to a new tram line. Construction work on the tram on Mallorca was supposed to have started in 2011, but something always got in the way. But it is now really set to get underway next year. The foundation stone for this was laid by the Balearic Prime Minister and the Transport Minister of the Spanish central government when the two institutions signed the agreement. This guarantees the Balearic Islands full financing of the first construction phase, amounting to 185 million euros, for the "Trambadía", which means something like tram on the bay. The total cost of the project would be 250 million euros, as mallorcazeitung.es reports. The journey time on the approximately 10-kilometer-long route with 16 stops between Son Sant Joan airport and Plaça d'Espanya in downtown Palma is to be 30 minutes, with a tram running every ten minutes. There will also be a connection to Ballermann later on. The first train is scheduled to run in 2027, but until then millions of holidaymakers will continue to rely on buses, taxis or rental cars every year, which can cost time and nerves, especially in high season. In addition, traffic is often backed up on the motorway towards the city, especially when holidaymakers rush into the city instead of to the beach in bad weather.

Zagreb Airport in October just below pre-crisis level

A total of 321.046 passengers were handled at Zagreb Airport last October. This corresponds to a decrease of 2,9 percent compared to 2019. This means that the airport is approaching the level before the pandemic, but only just missing it. The situation is similar with the number of flight movements, at 4.038, only seven fewer than three years ago. The gap is a little clearer in the cumulative view: In the period from January to October, Zagreb Airport welcomed a total of 2.623.203 travelers, a decrease of 11,3 percent compared to 2019 - in absolute numbers there are 333.906 fewer passengers. Zagreb Airport expects around three million passengers by the end of the year, according to the online portal Ex-Yu-Aviation.

Emirates flies record result

Emirates has returned to profitability after the heavy losses caused by the pandemic. The Gulf carrier can put the red pen aside for now, as the bottom line is a significant increase of the equivalent of 1,1 billion US dollars for the first six months of the year - a new half-year record. The airline has thus achieved a turnaround; the group loss in the same period last year was a whopping 1,6 billion US dollars. Accordingly, revenue figures also soared: While around 6,7 billion US dollars were generated in the same period last year, revenue in the first six months of the current fiscal year amounted to 15,3 billion US dollars - an increase of 128 percent. "We expect customer demand in our business areas to remain strong in the second half of 2022-23. However, we also expect headwinds and are keeping a close eye on inflation costs and other macroeconomic challenges such as the strong US dollar and the fiscal policies of the key markets. “We expect to return to profitability by the end of the financial year,” said Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates Airline and Group.

Lufthansa orders 24.000 economy class seats from Recaro

Lufthansa has ordered around 24.000 economy class seats from German manufacturer Recaro for installation on the mainline and Swiss airlines. These are the CL3710 and CL3810 models. The order volume corresponds to the requirements for around 100 aircraft. "We look back on 50 years of partnership with Lufthansa and it is a great honor for us to continue working with them to optimize the passenger journey," said Mark Hiller, CEO of Recaro Aircraft Seating and Recaro Holding. "Our shared goals for sustainable, comfortable seating solutions have brought great success to both Recaro and Lufthansa and I am confident that our CL3710 and CL3810 seats will continue this tradition of excellence." The CL3810 economy class seat will be retrofitted to Swiss' A330-300 and Lufthansa's B747-8 aircraft. The seat is 15 percent lighter than its predecessor, allowing airlines to save thousands in fuel costs and optimize cabin performance. The CL3710's modular design in Lufthansa's colors minimizes maintenance and keeps total cost of ownership low. The six-way adjustable headrest with neck support increases sleeping comfort for the passenger, and the seat's storage flap is designed to conveniently accommodate personal smart devices.

Silk Way West orders two Boeing 777-8F

Cargo airline Silk Way West Airlines has ordered two Boeing 777-8F aircraft. It has also secured options for another two units. The order had previously been listed by the manufacturer as an unidentified customer. The Azerbaijan-based carrier had already decided in mid-2022 that it would order the competing A350F model. It has now also placed an order with competitor Boeing. Silk Way West is currently a pure Boeing operator. "We are pleased to announce this order with our long-standing partner Boeing and to become one of the world's first customers for the latest cargo aircraft," said Zaur Akhundov, President of the Silk Way Group. "Silk Way West Airlines is celebrating its 10th anniversary this year, and for the past ten years the airline has operated an all-Boeing fleet. Air Astana reactivates Beijing flights

Kazakhstan's national airline will again connect Almaty with the Chinese capital from November 22, 2022. The flights will be operated once a week with an Airbus A321LR. Air Astana is thus further expanding its route network to China in addition to the two weekly flights from Almaty to Chengdu. Departure from Almaty is at 1:35 a.m. and passengers land in Beijing at 8:30 a.m. The return flight from the Chinese capital is at 11:30 a.m. and arrival in Almaty at 14:45 p.m. All times refer to the respective local time. The airline has been offering Beijing flights since 2002, but paused the connection from March 2020 due to the corona pandemic. In these 18 years, more than 1,1 million passengers have been carried on the route, Air Astana said in a press release. The resumption of the route comes as a surprise, especially since China has so far stuck to its own zero-Covid policy and is thus one of the few countries that has barely opened up so far. Accordingly, all air travelers are required to undergo a ten-day quarantine upon arrival in Beijing. In addition, all passengers from Kazakhstan, including transit travelers, must present a health code issued by the Chinese Embassy in Kazakhstan or the Chinese Consulate General in Almaty. In addition, a negative PCR test result from two different laboratories must be presented both 24 hours and 48 hours before departure.

Japan: Skymark orders Boeing 737 Max

The Japanese airline Skymark Airlines once wanted to fly long-haul with Airbus A380s. The order fell through for financial reasons. Mexico: Unruly-Pax freaks out and hits Emirates check-in agent

On November 1, 2022, a passenger lost her temper at Mexico City Airport and attacked a check-in employee working for Emirates. The argument is said to have been triggered by two circumstances: on the one hand, the traveler's passport had expired and, on the other hand, he had already arrived at the counter after the check-in time. The result: the check-in agent had to refuse the woman permission to fly. That was probably the right decision, because he turned out to be a dangerous "unruly PAX". The excluded passenger did not want to acknowledge the decision and lost his temper. She threw her laptop, his open suitcase and other items at the airport employee. At the same time, she shouted insults and even started hitting the ground employee. Other employees tried - without any significant success - to intervene and calm the situation down. This at least ended the physical attacks, but the woman then stood on the counter, clearly showed her bottom to the check-in agents and shouted vicious insults at other passengers. Security and the police had to be called for help and finally intervened. Emirates said of the incident: "We can confirm that an incident occurred on November 1 at the check-in counter at Mexico City International Airport in which a passenger who was late to the check-in counter was travelling with an expired passport. The passenger was denied boarding, became agitated and physically abused ground staff, prompting airport security and police to intervene. The safety of our passengers and staff is of paramount importance and will not be compromised."
