Smartwings launches the first charter flights from České Budějovice

After a delay of several years, the time is set to come in summer 2023. The Czech airport in Budweis wants to compete with Linz Airport. Smartwings will initially fly to Rhodes and Antalya with Boeing 737-800s. According to regional politicians, further destinations are already being prepared. The former military airport near České Budějovice was expanded at great expense and turned into a civilian airport. The initiators of the project at the time promised a veritable low-cost Eldorado, but they did not succeed in attracting a single low-cost airline to Budweis. In addition, there were considerable problems with the extension of the license, as the Czech air traffic control objected to a certain extent, as it was initially unable to control it in the way the operator wanted for personnel reasons. There were considerable restrictions that made the use of Airbus A320, Boeing 737 and Co impossible. A lot has also changed in terms of shareholders, as everyone except the South Bohemia region has dropped out. Almost nothing has remained unchanged at management level either. The South Bohemia region is now the sole shareholder of České Budějovice Airport. But that has not accelerated the repeatedly postponed start date. Regardless of this: Smartwings has announced flights to Rhodes in Greece and Antalya in Turkey for the 2023 summer flight schedule. These are not scheduled flights, but charter flights on behalf of the tour operator Čedok. This also means that there will initially only be one pair of flights per week. From August 4, 2023, flights to Rhodes will be made from Budweis on Mondays and Antalya on Fridays. For the time being

Bomb threat against Air China flight over Germany

Due to a bomb threat, Air China flight CA15 was escorted by fighter jets on December 2022, 617, en route from Chengdu to Paris-CDG via Germany, Belgium and France. The operator of a website had received the threat and immediately contacted the French executive. First, two fighter jets from the German Air Force took off in Rostock-Laage. These escorted the Airbus A330-300 with the registration B-8383 to the Belgian airspace border. Here the Belgians took over before the French armed forces escorted it. The long-haul aircraft was able to land safely in CDG and was then thoroughly investigated. The operator of a homepage received information in a comment post that there was at least one bomb on Air China flight CA617. As a precaution, he immediately contacted the gendarmerie, which, for security reasons, forwarded the theoretically possible threat to air traffic control and the military. The Airbus A330-300 was then escorted by the armed forces of Germany, Belgium and France until it landed in Paris. A comprehensive check has shown that there were no explosive devices on board and therefore no threat. The French police now want to find the perpetrator. The operator of the website, who has called in the police as a precaution, does not expect any criminal proceedings, as according to the statement of the gendarmerie, he acted in an exemplary manner and all necessary steps were taken in accordance with the principle of "safety first".

Graz Airport wants to “incorporate” a small part of the former Nittner Air Base

A few years ago, the former military area of Graz Airport was abandoned. Up until now, the future use was still completely open. Now the airport has applied for part of the area of the former Nittner Air Base to be included in the civil airfield. Even though there is an existing taxiway between the former military area and Graz-Thalerhof Airport, the former Nittner Air Base is not formally a civil airfield. In concrete terms, this means that the properties and infrastructure there are currently not allowed to be used for aviation purposes. This is exactly what Graz Airport wants to change and has submitted a formal application to the Federal Ministry for Climate Protection, Environment, Energy, Mobility, Innovation and Technology to amend the existing civil airfield permit to include part of the former military area. In concrete terms, this means that if the decision is positive, the former military infrastructure can then be used for civil purposes, for example by general aviation. Even though there was once military aviation in this area, the Ministry of Transport must first give the green light for civilian use. Specifically, the area of Graz Airport is to be expanded so that the former Nittner Air Base is also included in the civil airfield permit. This is a bureaucratic effort, because according to the mandatory publication in the official gazette of the Wiener Zeitung, this is a so-called major procedure. "It is intended to include a 7.255 square meter area of the former military airfield Graz Thalerhof (Nittner Air Base) in the airport area. The planned civil airfield expansion is located on plots 35/2, 35/4, 35/5 and 103/3 in the cadastral municipality 63286 Thalerhof. An approx. 5.655 square meter area of the former military airfield Graz Thalerhof (Nittner Air Base) is to be built on the expansion area.
