Airport Managing Director Michael Hupe: “Travel broadens horizons and connects people and the economy. The town twinning forms a bridge to other regions and cultures. As an airport, we help to promote exchange between Antalya and Nuremberg." Russia wants to launch new supersonic passenger plane

The Russian Federation wants to put a supersonic passenger aircraft back in the air. A corresponding technology demonstrator is to be produced as early as next year. This is to be based on the MiG-29 fighter jet. The demonstrator will be produced by the Chaplygin Siberian Scientific Research Institute of Aviation, announced institute director Vladimir Barsuk at a press conference. Based on the test vehicle, a new supersonic passenger aircraft is to be brought to series production. This is to be developed from scratch. Barsuk said: "A new fuselage will be used, a new wing, a wing with a reduced supersonic shock wave. Modern research enables us to design the aircraft in such a way that the shock wave is significantly reduced. SibNIA will carry out flight tests." It is currently assumed that the development and research work on the demonstrator alone will take around two years. There is another supersonic project in Russia, as a corresponding business jet is to be developed under the leadership of the Rostec Group. There is currently no reliable information about the extent to which there is a connection between the two projects or whether they are identical. We will have to wait and see how things develop. Tu-144: Infamous Soviet history This is not the first "excursion" of the Russian aviation industry into supersonic passenger aviation. In the 1960s, the Russian aviation industry was in a race with the USA, France, the United Kingdom and other countries to build particularly fast commercial aircraft. The oil crisis at the time led to the United States withdrawing completely. What remains is the Concorde, which was developed and built jointly by France and the UK, and the Soviet

Potential Water Loss: FAA directs Dreamliner reviews

According to the US Civil Aviation Authority, the Boeing 787 aircraft poses a potential risk of water pressure loss, which could subsequently lead to leaks in critical components. The FAA has already issued a corresponding airworthiness directive. Since the Dreamliner was put into service, various defects have emerged that had to be remedied. It has now been determined that under certain circumstances water can leak out and this can subsequently damage important components or even cause dangerous short circuits. The FAA has not yet explicitly ordered any improvements, but has asked airlines, pilots, technicians, the manufacturer and experts to comment by January 27, 2023. The background to this is that the FAA wants to collect suggestions and reports of experience. The document published by the US authority also shows that it feels compelled to act for safety reasons. It is currently assumed that at least 135 Boeing 787s registered in the USA could be affected by the problem. According to the document, the agency was forced to act after receiving reports of a loss of water pressure during the flight and water leaks affecting several electronic devices. However, there are also immediate measures: Operators must immediately conduct a visual inspection of all potable water systems at Door 1 and Door 3 of the lavatories and galleys for missing or improperly installed clamshell couplings and take appropriate corrective action. According to the regulator, two operators using the Dreamliner reported water leaks. One stated that the leak was significant due to a loose potable water system hose caused by an improperly installed coupling in the lavatory. The other reported a water leak caused by a

Airbus A380: Emirates finds cracks in wing spars

The world's largest Airbus A380 operator, Emirates Airline, has discovered cracks in the wing spars of some superjumbos during inspections. The problem was immediately reported to the regulatory authorities and the European aircraft manufacturer. The latter has already sent a 60-strong team to Dubai to evaluate the problem and find solutions, reports Aviation Week, citing Emirates CEO Jim Clark. According to the report, Airbus has promised that repairs will be carried out. The spars will have to be reworked in various areas. The cause of the defect is currently still being evaluated. With 84 Airbus A380s, the Gulf carrier is by far the largest superjumbo operator. The defects identified also mean that the commissioning of units that were temporarily parked due to the corona pandemic has been delayed. For safety reasons, the spar problems must first be remedied with the support of the manufacturer. Specifically, the defects were found on four A380s. One aircraft is currently being handled by Airbus in Toulouse, France. Jim Clark said that the cracks were discovered during the usual inspections. The EASA has also been informed. Emirates assumes that an airworthiness directive will be issued. This could include that the wing spars must be checked regularly. However, the manager also qualified this to Aviation Week: At the moment, it is not a safety problem. Nevertheless, Emirates wants to have the defect fixed before it becomes one. The affected areas are the upper and lower flanges of the outer rear spar (ORS) between ribs 33 and 49, the outer inner front spar (OIFS) between ribs 8 and 14 and the outer front spar.

Bern: Flybair should take off again

The virtual airline Flybair was actually supposed to be sold, but both concrete offers received were too low in the opinion of the board of directors or contained conditions that could not be met. Now the company wants to offer flights on its own again. So far, Flybair has not been particularly successful, because the offer was accepted far less than predicted - also because of the corona pandemic. As a result, the number of flights has been greatly reduced. At the moment, it does not offer any holiday flights at all. That is about to change, because the board of directors has decided to continue on its own and to supplement the Helvetic Airways holiday program in summer 2023. The company is confident that it will be able to achieve profitable capacity utilization in summer 2023. Flybair does not have its own fleet, but charters aircraft from airlines. The seats are then marketed on its own account. According to the company, it is currently the only so-called virtual airline in Switzerland. Flybair was founded - also with the help of a crowdfunding campaign - after the bankruptcy of the former home base carrier Skywork. Between June and October 2023, two to four destinations are to be offered from Bern-Belp. Flybair has not yet announced any further details. In any case, the company is confident that it will be possible to get into the profit zone and thus restructure the company. It remains to be seen which operating carrier it will work with.

Klagenfurt Airport: Liliair and renewed vote on the call option on Tuesday

On December 20, 2022, Lilihill plans to present the Liliair airline project. On the same day, at the request of the ÖVP, the state government will again hold a vote on the possible exercise of the call option. In May 2022, this did not find a majority because the SPÖ state government members voted against it. The issue is now being discussed again, although it is unlikely that the Social Democrats will now change their minds. The ongoing dispute surrounding Klagenfurt Airport has been repeatedly described as resolved by Governor Peter Kaiser (SPÖ), but State Councilor Martin Gruber (ÖVP) is continuing to push the issue of the call option. The latter wants to ensure that the partial privatization is reversed and that the airport is once again fully owned by the public sector. In an open letter, "supervisory board members, management and employee representatives of Kärntner Flughafen Betriebs GmbH" address the public and write, among other things, that in connection with the most recent supervisory board meeting, which also dealt with the final report for the 2021 financial year prepared by the auditor EY, "credit and reputation-damaging statements, defamatory accusations and deliberately spreading false reports" were circulating. ORF Carinthia, among others, reported that EY had identified "serious deficiencies" and that there was a financing requirement of two million euros. Serious allegations were being made against the management. This is rejected in the said open letter as follows: "The auditor has found neither violations nor irregularities or offenses by the management in connection with the business conduct or preparation of the annual financial statements. On the contrary: the management has successfully and decisively guided the company through the Covid 19 pandemic.
