Montgomery: Rampworker dies in Embraer 175 engine

A tragic accident occurred at Montgomery Airport in the US state of Alabama on the afternoon of December 31, 2022. For reasons that are still unclear, an apron worker was sucked into the engine of an Embraer 175 flying for American Airlines and lost his life as a result. According to official information, the accident happened on December 31, 2022 at around 15:00 p.m. An airport employee who was responsible for loading baggage was said to have been near the Embraer 175's engines after they started. The man was literally sucked in. Although other workers immediately alerted the cockpit crew to the accident and rushed to help, the apron worker could no longer be helped. His colleagues found him dead. The NTSB has launched an official investigation to determine whether the man acted recklessly and, contrary to safety regulations, stood too close to the engine that had just been switched on, or whether the pilots started it up without the appropriate clearance. At the moment, no statement can be made on this, as the accident investigation is ongoing. The FAA says that the airport had to be closed for several hours due to the incident and was only reopened to traffic at around 20:30 p.m. The passengers and crew members have left the Embraer 175. The aircraft was no longer used commercially that day and the flight was also canceled. The travelers were rebooked on other flights. The pilots are said to have been aware of what had happened.

Around 29.000 travelers are said to have chosen destinations such as Bangkok, Malé, Cancún and Mauritius. For this reason, Austrian Airlines doubled the frequency of flights to the Maldives over the holidays: instead of three, the red-white-red airline's planes took off from Vienna Airport to Malé during the holidays, six times a week. The frequencies to Mauritius and Cancún were also increased by one flight each, so that Austrian flew to Mauritius four times a week and to Cancún three times a week. On short-haul routes, Paris, London and Barcelona were particularly heavily booked. In total, the carrier had around 400.000 passengers around Christmas and New Year. Flight operations were anything but idle over Christmas and the New Year. On December 24th and 31st, more than 17.000 passengers flew to their destination with Austrian Airlines. "As a red-white-red airline, we are particularly pleased that we were able to bring many Austrians to their loved ones or on vacation over the holidays," said Michael Trestl, CCO Austrian Airlines.
