2022: Münster/Osnabrück Airport had 834.424 passengers

Münster/Osnabrück Airport had a total of 2022 passengers in the recently concluded year 834.424. This means that there were 130 percent more travelers than in 2021. However, this was well below the pre-crisis level, which was only 85 percent. With 37.676 take-offs and landings, flight movements even increased by 2019 percent compared to 15. There was a great deal of catching up to do in the tourism sector in particular. Tourism was a key driver of the strong traffic growth, especially in the summer and autumn of last year. The busiest connections were to Palma de Mallorca with 241.000 passengers - the highest annual figure in ten years - and to Antalya with 219.000 passengers. Scheduled flights to the Lufthansa hubs in Frankfurt and Munich also recovered, but are only half of the pre-Corona level. Last year, 113.000 passengers used the connections to Munich and 46.000 passengers to Frankfurt.

ECJ: Ryanair liable for non-disclosure of information by OTAs

The low-cost airline Ryanair and the Czech ticket agent Kiwi have been in legal disputes with each other for many years. Now the European Court of Justice has ruled that the low-cost airline must pay compensation even if it was informed in good time that a flight had been cancelled. The background to this is that many so-called online travel agents use so-called screen scraping when selling flight tickets. There are usually no official contracts with the airlines. In order to prevent the passenger from contacting the airline directly, automatically generated contact details are usually stored, but not the customer's actual email address. It was precisely this circumstance that led to the case ending up before the European Court of Justice. One could actually assume that Ryanair had fulfilled all of its information obligations by sending an email more than two weeks before departure informing them that the flight would not take place. However, Kiwi.com never forwarded this email to the passenger, so the information did not reach him. The European Court of Justice has now ruled that the airline is still obliged to pay compensation in such a case. What is remarkable about this ruling is that Ryanair has been taking legal action against so-called OTAs for many years and has also brought numerous lawsuits against Kiwi.com. The carrier is of the opinion that it only has the right to sell its own flight tickets. So far, the budget airline has lost most of its lawsuits. One of Ryanair's arguments is that online travel agents usually do not pass on the contact details of travelers or enter fake email addresses. In the case that ended up before the ECJ, the passengers first want to

Easyjet opens maintenance hangar at Berlin-Brandenburg Airport

The low-cost airline Easyjet has officially opened a new maintenance hangar on the grounds of Berlin-Brandenburg Airport. The carrier has had a base in the German capital since 2004. More than 80.000 passengers flew through Klagenfurt Airport in 2022

Despite initial difficulties due to the pandemic in the first quarter, a total of 2022 passengers were handled at Klagenfurt Airport by the end of 82.562. Challenges such as resource shortages and staff shortages affected airlines across Europe during the summer months, which also led to significant flight cancellations. Klagenfurt Airport also felt the effects of this. Nevertheless, the turnaround has been achieved and after the pandemic years the airport is on a growth path, the airport said in a press release. In June 2022, 10.311 passengers used the airport, the record figure of 10.606 passengers was recorded last month. More than 2023 passengers are expected in 250.000 “Ryanair has made a significant contribution to the positive development at Klagenfurt Airport with attractive, new scheduled connections from November 2022. After Doncaster: Wizz Air UK also closes Cardiff base

The low-cost airline Wizz Air UK is finally closing its base at Cardiff Airport, which only opened in April 2022. After Doncaster, this is the second base to be abandoned after only a very short time. The Cardiff base is currently on a "winter break". It was originally announced that it would resume operations with the change to the 2022/23 summer flight schedule period. But that will not happen, because Wizz Air UK is giving up this base. In the future, no aircraft of the pink low-cost airline will be stationed at this airport. Doncaster was closed just a few weeks after the base opened. The airport has now ceased operations completely. In April of last year, Wizz Air UK set up a base at Cardiff Airport with big announcements. However, the number of flights began to be reduced in August 2022 before the decision was made to send this base into a "winter break". No increase was announced for the summer of 2023. But that will no longer happen. Employees will be offered a transfer to other bases maintained in the UK. Passengers affected by cancellations will be able to either get their money back or rebook to other UK departure points.

2022: Passenger volume at Munich Airport increases to 31,6 million passengers

A busy summer has brought Munich Airport massive growth in all traffic areas in 2022. Passenger numbers rose by 19 million year-on-year to a total of 31,6 million passengers. The airport has thus already achieved two-thirds of its record result from the pre-crisis year of 2019. The number of flight movements almost doubled compared to 2021 to over 285.000 take-offs and landings. Seat occupancy of aircraft in Munich has reached the record level of 77,5 percent from 2018. "The gradual removal of travel restrictions has reawakened people's desire to travel. This has led to a significant expansion of the flight offerings by the airlines. The bookings received by the airlines indicate that traffic growth at the Munich site will continue in 2023," said Jost Lammers, CEO of Munich Airport GmbH. After a weak first quarter still marked by the pandemic, demand for air travel rose enormously, according to the airport. While only four million passengers were counted at Munich Airport in the first three months, there were already over ten million passengers in the third quarter, which was the busiest in terms of traffic. There was a need to catch up, particularly in long-distance travel: since July, traffic between Munich and destinations in the USA has already been above the 2019 level. Since the 2022/2023 winter flight schedule came into force, this has also been the case for traffic to destinations in India, South Korea, Singapore and Thailand. Air freight also benefited from the traffic boom at Munich Airport. Freight volumes rose by 2022 percent in 55 to a total of around 259.000 tons.
