Company boss Campbell Wilson justified this step with the higher profile of the latter airline. The manager also explained to the Press Trust of India agency that a further 268,5 million US dollars will be invested in the merged company. Tata Sons took over Air India and some of its subsidiaries some time ago. Intensive work is being done to unify and modernize the group. It has been known for some time that Vistara and Air India will merge. The two companies only officially announced last week that the merger process had begun. Formal approvals have been requested from the competition authorities. It is currently assumed that the merger will be completed by March 2024. Air India Express and Air Asia India, which is now officially called AIX Connect, will also be merged. In the future, Air India - including Vistara - will appear as a full-service brand. Air India Express – including Air Asia India – will continue to operate as a low-cost airline. The Air India/Vistara merger also means that Singapore Airlines will own a 25,1 percent stake in the joint venture. In this context, the airline will invest around 268,5 million US dollars.

Alaska Airlines loses trademark battle against Virgin Group

The airline Alaska Airlines has lost a court case in London regarding trademark rights against the Virgin Group. The background to this is that during the takeover of Virgin America it was agreed that the brand could continue to be used in return for a license fee. Alaska Airlines has since given up the Virgin America brand and is of the opinion that it therefore no longer has to pay license fees. The Virgin Group saw things differently and insisted on compliance with the contract, which stipulates that at least eight million US dollars per year must be paid until 2039. The court ruled in favor of the Virgin Group. However, a spokesperson for Alaska Airlines announced that they will appeal against the ruling as they consider it to be unfounded.

Online check-in: how long has it been around?

Some airlines explicitly require it and even charge "penalty fees" for non-compliance. If it doesn't work or isn't available - for example on charter flights - many passengers get upset. We're talking about online check-in, which is now almost indispensable. In the past, it was generally common practice and in most cases there was no other option: passengers had to go to the so-called check-in counter with their ticket, which was more like a small booklet, and their ID. There they were given their boarding pass and checked in their luggage. Business travellers in particular, who even in the "good old days" often only travelled with hand luggage, often found it annoying to have to stand in queues and sometimes lose valuable time. Some carriers have reacted to this and introduced so-called telephone check-in. The data then had to be given, the boarding pass was then issued and initially deposited at a collection counter at the airport. Nowadays, only a few carriers offer telephone check-in and if so, only for frequent flyers with the highest status and/or first class customers. The boarding pass is sent by email where possible or handed out by an employee at the airport. The exact details and instructions for telephone check-in can vary depending on the airline and airport. Passengers are usually provided with a special telephone number that they can call to complete the check-in process. Regardless: Telephone check-in was the precursor to today's internet check-in. Alaska Airlines was the pioneer The world's first airline to allow its passengers to check in online

Zagreb: Croatia Airlines slipped even deeper into the red

Croatian Star Alliance member Croatia Airlines posted a loss of EUR 18,2 million last year. Although it had significantly more passengers on board compared to 2021, it was in the red for the fifth time in a row. The carrier carried a total of 2022 passengers in 1.453.224. Despite the significant increase compared to 2021, this was not enough to achieve the turnaround. On the contrary: In direct comparison with 2019, when it had a net loss of EUR 10,7 million, it slipped even deeper into the red. Croatia's management explains this as follows: "The results in 2022 were primarily affected by the increase in fuel prices and the overall negative impact of the increase on other financial parameters." Sales are said to have been around 17 percent below the level before the corona pandemic. However, costs are said to have shot up by around 53 percent. The company criticizes the fact that, in addition to kerosene costs, fees for services at airports and air traffic control have also risen considerably. Last year, Croatia Airlines received a state subsidy of 33,7 million euros. The government also granted a so-called shareholder loan of a further 12,5 million euros. This increased the debt to the state to 78,8 million euros. In addition, the company owes three million euros to two Croatian banks. The airline emphasizes that it is in a position to meet all obligations resulting from the loans on time.
