On Sunday, March 5, 2023, around 45 minutes before the arrival of United Airlines flight UA2609, a passenger attempted to attack a flight attendant with a broken spoon. The cabin crew member was reportedly stabbed, but other passengers intervened and were able to prevent anything worse from happening. The domestic flight, operated with the Boeing 757-200 with registration N67134, was en route from Los Angeles to Boston. Around 45 minutes before landing, a man from Massachusetts is said to have attempted to open an airplane door. When a flight attendant then tried to confront him, he attacked her. The "unruly PAX" is said to have stabbed the cabin crew member with a broken spoon. The cabin crew initially became aware of the incident due to an alarm, as a door on the starboard side, located between first and economy class, had been unlocked. When a flight attendant examined the door, he found that the door lock handle had been pushed a quarter of the way into the unlocked position. The emergency slider had also been moved to the disarmed position. After relocking the door, the flight attendant reported the incident to the captain. Another flight attendant recognized that Torres had been near the door and believed that he was the one who had tampered with the door. The crew approached Torres to question him and the man requested video evidence to prove that it was him. The stabbing attack then followed. Other passengers intervened, pushing the unruly PAX to the ground and preventing worse from happening.
