Vereinigung Cockpit criticizes the anti-strike debate

On Monday, March 27, 2023, EVG and Verdi called for a comprehensive warning strike in the transport sector, thereby largely paralyzing the Federal Republic. More and more voices were raised that such industrial action should be banned. Since last week, Ryanair has been calling for people to sign a petition that aims to at least allow overflights in the event of ATC strikes in France. The Cockpit Association rejects the approach and also has absolutely no opinion of the anti-strike discussion in Germany. They point out that intervening in the right to strike would be an intervention in the social market economy.

Works meeting: Ryanair teased against AUA deletions

Due to works meetings called by the Vida union and the Bord works council, Austrian Airlines had to cancel around 28 flights on Tuesday, March 2023, 100. This came at an inconvenient time, especially in Germany-Austria traffic, because on Monday a large number of flights between the two countries were canceled due to a large-scale strike. At the end of last week, it was announced that the management of Austrian Airlines had improved the previous offer to the flight personnel. According to the proposal, there should be higher wages for the employees, with the salaries of the flight attendants in the lowest seniority levels to increase particularly sharply. The union did not want to reveal its cards in advance and pointed out that the works council would first discuss the offer with the employees at the works meetings. There will also be delays and cancellations on Wednesday. This is due to the fact that some aircraft are not at the airports where they should actually be. This affects, for example, long-haul flights to the United States of America. Austrian Airlines explained, among other things, that it had tried to proactively rebook the affected passengers on other connections. Competitor Ryanair used the opportunity to run a promotional campaign. It introduced so-called "rescue fares" starting at 69 euros and claimed that Austrian Airlines had had to cancel "hundreds of flights". "Ryanair is once again saving the day in Vienna after Austrian Airlines canceled hundreds of flights at short notice on Tuesday, March 28. Ryanair is offering rescue fares starting at just 69 euros to help Austrian travelers who have been affected by the recent last-minute cancellations.

Nuremberg satisfied with hub connection to Heathrow

There has been a non-stop connection between Nuremberg and London Heathrow for just over a year. The Bavarian airport considers this to be particularly important because it has been able to attract many transfer passengers for flights to the USA. "The connection from British Airways to the London Heathrow hub was a long-awaited wish of passengers and companies from our metropolitan region," says Dr. Michael Hupe, Managing Director of Nuremberg Airport. "The connection not only brings business travelers, schoolchildren, students and tourists to London, but also to many destinations worldwide via the hub." In addition to domestic British transfer connections to Edinburgh, Manchester or Glasgow, for example, New York Airport is at the top of the list of transfer destinations. Followed by Chicago, Dallas, Phoenix, Miami and Boston. The route is also popular in the opposite direction, as the recently published 2022 annual report of the Nuremberg Congress and Tourism Center (CTZ) shows: According to this, the US market developed excellently and remains Nuremberg's most important foreign market with over 120.000 overnight stays, to which the new British Airways connection in particular contributes.

Symbolic decision: EU Commission declares Alitalia loan illegal

The EU Commission has ruled that a state loan of 2019 million euros granted to Alitalia in 400 was also illegal. The competition authorities ordered Italy to demand the money back. However, the decision is more symbolic. Alitalia had to file for bankruptcy in May 2017 and was kept afloat until autumn 2021 with the help of state loans granted in several tranches. According to the EU Commission, the successor Ita Airways is not considered a legal successor, so it does not have to pay Alitalia's debts. Since the former flag carrier has been in liquidation for some time and numerous assets have already been sold, it is extremely unlikely that there are sufficient funds to comply with the EU Commission's order. Competitors who had sued against the emergency loans granted to Alitalia argued from the outset that they suspected the Italian government was planning for the insolvent carrier to never have to repay the money. The EU Commission has now ordered that the loan of 400 million euros must be reclaimed. A further loan of 2017 million euros was granted in 900. Alitalia has not been able to repay this either. Due to the insolvency proceedings, it can be assumed that the Italian taxpayer will never see the money again and therefore the EU Commission's decision is only symbolic.

Because of rioters on board: Ryanair had to land in Memmingen unscheduled

On Sunday evening, a Ryanair flight en route from Dublin to Bodrum had to make an unscheduled stopover in Memmingen. According to the police, the reason for this was that a drunken man was causing a disturbance on board. The "unruly PAX" is also said to have tried to open an emergency exit door. He is said to be a 48-year-old Irishman. In addition to causing a disturbance, he is said to have threatened the cabin crew of the budget airline. According to official information, the man was not disturbed, so the captain decided to make an unscheduled landing in Memmingen in order to hand the troublemaker over to the German police. Immediately after arriving at a parking position, the federal police entered the Ryanair jet. The police stated that he at least offered passive resistance. After his arrest, the public prosecutor's office ordered that the 48-year-old Irishman be taken to a hospital to determine his state of health. The Ryanair plane was apparently fully occupied. The unscheduled stopover in Memmingen caused a significant delay for the remaining passengers. This also affected those who were booked on the return flight from Bodrum to Dublin. The Federal Police are now conducting an investigation under Section 315 of the Criminal Code (dangerous interference with aviation security) on the orders of the public prosecutor.

Air Baltic leases further Wetlease machines

The Latvian airline Air Baltic will deploy additional wet-lease aircraft between March 27 and May 31, 2023. The reason for this is that engine maintenance on some A220s is taking longer. Therefore, aircraft and crews are being leased from XFly (Bombardier CRJ-900NG - 88 seats), Danish Air Transport (Airbus A320-232 - 180 seats), Carpatair (Airbus A319-100 - 150 seats) and Cyprus Airways (Airbus A320-232 - 180 seats). Air Baltic itself also flies in the ACMI for other carriers. For example, six Airbus A220-300s are in use for Swiss.
