After a "break" of over 27 years, Zambia Airways has resumed flight operations. In December 2021, the dormant carrier was reactivated and operated the "comeback flight" from Lusaka to Harare on March 28, 2023. Two years after the original cessation of flight operations, the liquidation of Zambia Airways was initiated. This lasted an impressive 25 years, but was stopped on December 1, 2021. With the support of Ethiopian Airlines and the Zambian Industrial Development Corporation, the carrier was successfully awakened from its slumber. The company had actually wanted to take off again earlier, but the corona pandemic meant that the project had to endure some delays. On March 28, 2023, the time had come, because the "comeback flight" was carried out. Initially, the focus will be on routes within Zambia. The 55-minute flight to Harare was operated by a de Havilland Dash 8-400, the only aircraft in the airline's fleet. The airline will fly three times a week between Lusaka and Harare and plans to carry at least 2028 million passengers annually by 1,9. Last month, the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe (CAAZ) granted two Foreign Operator Permits (FOP) to Eswatini Air and Zambia Airways, giving ZN the green light to operate scheduled services to Harare, returning it to the international network after almost three decades.
