Data breach: Air Baltic has to disable web check-in

The Latvian airline Air Baltic is currently struggling with a data breach. This means that web check-in is not available on many flights. The affected passengers must appear at the check-in counter at the respective airport with their ID. The carrier informs travelers by email that reservation data has been sent to other passengers due to a technical error. Put simply, this means that people who are not concerned with the confidential data have received a reservation confirmation from Air Baltic that they should not have received. To ensure that the tickets are not used improperly under a false name, the Latvian carrier is asking the affected passengers to appear in person at the check-in counter. For this reason, internet check-in is not available on many flights. The company emphasizes in a letter that there are no extra costs for using the counter check-in, which is requested. Air Baltic usually asks you to pay if you have not previously checked in via the internet. The airline also stresses that no payment data is affected by the data breach. Those recipients to whom reservation data was accidentally sent would not have access to credit card information and/or similar payment methods. Due to the data breach, additional services cannot be booked online. These can currently only be purchased by phone, email and at the airport counter. This is also for security reasons, according to the letter from Air Baltic.

IATA: Traffic volume is approaching pre-crisis levels

According to the latest figures from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), 2023 percent more passenger kilometers were sold in March 52,4 than in the same month last year. Traffic volume is said to have been 88 percent of the level before the corona pandemic. Globally, there is expected to be major growth in almost all markets. The Asia-Pacific region stands out in particular. Since corona restrictions were lifted relatively late in this part of the world, there is obviously a great need to catch up on travel. In Europe, on the other hand, the recovery is extremely uneven. While some markets are approaching or long since surpassing pre-crisis levels, Germany is at the bottom of the list, as no European market is recovering more slowly than that of Germany.
