Munich wins the VC airport check - red lantern goes to Weeze

The German pilots' union Vereinigung Cockpit published its annual VC airport check this week. First place this time went to Munich Airport, and the inglorious "red lantern" went to Weeze. Second place goes to Leipzig/Halle, followed by Stuttgart, Bremen, Erfurt, Kassel-Calden and Cologne/Bonn. Vereinigung Cockpit describes these airports as "very good airports". Another positive aspect is the increased involvement of Vereinigung Cockpit (VC) in security issues at Cologne-Bonn, Stuttgart, Munich and Kassel-Calden airports. Exchange of information between all those involved is a fundamental prerequisite for safe flight and airport operations. "We welcome the fact that - despite all the ongoing security challenges - German airports are undergoing steady change for the better. The technical security level is high and is being continuously improved. But above all, we are pleased that the VC's expertise in safety issues is valued at more and more airports and that we, as a professional association, can contribute to the Local Runway Safety Teams (LRST),” says Matthias Baier, press spokesman for the VC. There is currently more movement at the lower end of the scale than in the upper segment. This year, Weeze Airport is at the bottom with a score of 2,9. Saarbrücken (from 2,2 to 2,7) and Nuremberg (from 1,8 to 2,3) also slipped significantly. The decisive factor for the significantly worse rating here was that the VC is still not invited to the LRST at these airports, where incidents or planned structural changes are discussed in a confidential setting. The more participants, the more effective

Lower Austria vacation campaign: 231 applications approved so far

The Lower Austria holiday campaign is intended to support caring relatives and encourage them to take a break from this challenging activity. "Caring relatives are of great importance for the entire care sector. Because the compatriots want to be cared for primarily in their own four walls - this would not be possible without relatives. Supporting caring relatives through the holiday campaign is particularly important to us as the state of Lower Austria and to me as the responsible member of the government," said State Councilor for Social Affairs Teschl-Hofmeister. In the first half of 2023, 231 applications have been approved so far. In the same period last year, there were 134. In recognition of those relatives who care for people and enable them to live at home, caring relatives receive 175 euros for a vacation taken in Austria. This amount is increased to 225 euros if the stay took place in Lower Austria. If the carer's actual and proven overnight costs are below these amounts, a subsidy will be granted in the amount of the actually proven costs. The funding is available to people who look after people in need of care (at least with care level 3) as the main carer. The campaign can be used once per person per year. "Caring for relatives is not only physically demanding, but also represents a major psychological challenge. That's why I'm pleased that we were able to approve 231 applications for relatives again this year, who were able to treat themselves to a well-deserved break and recharge their energy reserves," said Teschl-Hofmeister.

New Railjets: ÖBB “copy” Westbahn decision

A few years ago, the Westbahn was still laughed at for using Stadler-Kiss multiple units for long-distance traffic. The reason: This model is based on local trains that are used as S-Bahn trains in Zurich, for example. Now the ÖBB has also ordered 14 sets that are to be placed in direct competition with the private operator. For many years, the Austrian Federal Railways were not exactly supporters of electric multiple units for long-distance traffic. So it is not surprising that the Railjets used to date are locomotive-hauled push-pull trains. Only the 4010/4130 series were used in this transport segment for a longer period of time. 4011s were also in operation for a short time, but these were returned to Deutsche Bahn AG. The 4010s, which were very popular with passengers, were even referred to in internal manuals at the time as "electric locomotives for passenger transport". The strong focus on locomotive-hauled long-distance trains also has its downside, because apart from the Railjet sets, there is not a single control car. This means that Intercity and Eurocity occasionally use local trains, mostly in Cityshutle livery. These obviously do not offer the comfort that is usual in long-distance traffic. ÖBB order confirms Westbahn's previous decision Since it started operations, the private Westbahn has been using double-decker electric multiple units from the Swiss manufacturer Stadler. These were originally developed for the Zurich S-Bahn, but Westbahn uses further developments designed for long-distance traffic. Die-hard ÖBB fans initially complained about the Kiss multiple units, but now everything is changing, because the Austrian Federal Railways will also be using Stadler Kiss-3 multiple units in the future, and of all places, on the

Half-year figures: Munich with 16,6 million passengers

Munich Airport recorded around 2023 million passengers in the first half of 16,6. In direct comparison with the same period last year, there was an increase of 28 percent. The average aircraft utilization rate is said to have been 80 percent. However, in the first six months of the current year, the Bavarian airport was also around 25 percent below the performance it had in the record year of 2019. The utilization rate, on the other hand, is said to be a new record. The upward trend is also reflected in the increase in the number of flight movements: In the first half of 2023, over 140.0000 flight movements were registered. This was an increase of nine percent compared to the previous year. Bavaria's premium hub now offers 200 travel destinations in 60 countries worldwide. The airport's cargo business is also benefiting from the increasing air traffic in Munich: with a total volume of around 132.000 tons, tonnage increased by over four percent compared to the same period last year.

Innsbruck: Planned weather service closure made it into parliament

The Austrian air traffic control company Austro Control announced some time ago that the weather service, which was previously based at Innsbruck Airport, would be closed. In the future, this service will be offered centrally from Vienna-Schwechat. There has been considerable resistance to this for some time. There has even been a hearing on the matter in parliament. Hermann Gahr (ÖVP), in his capacity as a member of the National Council, brought this matter to the House of Representatives. From his point of view, it is not just about the six jobs in Innsbruck that are to be eliminated or relocated to Vienna from mid-2024, but also about flight safety. The Tyrolean airport is very specific due to its geographical location and pilots require special training to be allowed to take off and land here commercially. Due to the fact that Innsbruck Airport is surrounded by mountains, the weather can also be correspondingly "moody". Shortly after it was announced that Austro Control would in future offer the aviation weather service centrally from Vienna and that it would in future rely on sensors that would be evaluated centrally instead of the meteorologists working in Tyrol, there was considerable criticism from all conceivable sides. Airlines, the airport, the town hall, the state government, members of the National Council, the union, pilot representatives and many others are demanding that the ACG reverse this decision and continue to have aviation weather service employees at the airport in the Tyrolean state capital. Experts are extremely critical of ACG's plans. Uniso argues that the special geographical location is the reason. A meteorologist on site can simply detect short-term weather changes with his human senses and quickly pass the information on to the pilots. In Innsbruck it is quite common for the area

Numerous adventure opportunities in the Pielachtal and Melker Alpenvorland

The diverse leisure activities in the Mostviertel are very popular with guests and locals. In order to further promote this positive development, the Leader project “Experience area development in the Pielachtal and Melk Alpine foothills” is adding new attractions to the regional tourism offerings. The offerings around the Pielachtal and Melk Alpine foothills are diverse and range from the narrow-gauge festival to the Mariazellerbahn, the Dirndlkirtag and Pielachtal Advent to hiking opportunities and the many cycling and mountain bike routes in the Melk Alpine foothills. In order to make even more guests aware of the beauty and diversity of the region, modern marketing measures and communication tools are now being developed and local tourism offerings are being expanded. The overarching project goal is to sustainably increase the quality of regional tourism offerings through close cooperation between the organizations, municipalities and partner companies. “With these measures, we want to show opportunities for both locals and companies and thus make a contribution to tourism added value. This is intended to increase the number of overnight stays and also boost day tourism," explains Anton Gonaus, chairman of the Leader Region Mostviertel Mitte. Fortunately, the number of overnight stays in the Pielachtal is already on a very good path: in 2022, over 59.000 overnight stays were recorded. This exceeded the figures from 2019. This upswing is partly due to many new businesses in the region. In order to continue this trend and maintain quality, various attractions and tourist offers for the region are being implemented as project priorities: "For example, the Pielachtal Dirndlkirtag and the Dirndltaler Erlebniswochen are increasingly being planned and implemented together. In addition, we organize events around
