France: Air traffic controllers called on strike again

Another air traffic controller strike is looming in France, as the SNCTA union is threatening to call for a work stoppage on September 15, 2023 and October 13, 2023. Among other things, the demands include wage increases to offset high inflation. The sharp rise in energy prices following the Russian Federation army's military attack on Ukraine has led to an enormous number of "free-rider effects". Many producers and retailers have increased their sales prices, in some cases significantly, even though they were hardly affected by the expensive energy prices, which have since fallen again. In most industries, the lower costs are now not being passed on to consumers, so it is not surprising that some companies are posting record profits. From the perspective of the air traffic controllers' union, the permanently high prices, which are a major driver of inflation, are also leading to income being at least partially "devalued". An hour of work is worth significantly less than before the war began. As in other countries and industries, the employee representatives want to negotiate more money for their members. It is well known that the situation in France is generally tense in the area of air traffic controllers. In recent years, strikes have been called repeatedly. Due to the geographical location, these can disrupt flight schedules in almost all of Europe. Although a flight between Austria and Germany may not be directly affected, indirect consequences are possible if the planned aircraft is stuck in Spain, for example, and cannot take off due to a lack of French overflight permission or has to take a considerable detour. In any case, the SNCTA union wants not only air traffic controllers, but also air traffic control engineers,

Lounges: Priority Pass increases prices, sometimes significantly

The lounge access card provider Priority Pass is increasing the prices for paid use of the exclusive waiting areas outside of the included quota, sometimes significantly. It is particularly expensive in the United Kingdom, where they charge 20 percent more. Depending on which Priority Pass contract you have, a certain number of lounge visits are included. In the cheapest packages or with some credit card providers who give out such a lounge card as a bonus, it may also be the case that no free quota is included at all. You can get precise information, for example, in your Priority Pass account or from the bank that you received the card from. The latest price increases initially only affect those lounge visits that are outside of the included quota. If you have a Priority Pass that includes unlimited use, you are not affected at first. For each use that is not included, you pay between seven and 20 percent more than before. In the EU, Priority Pass charges around seven percent more, in the USA around 9,4 percent more, and in the UK prices are even being raised by 20 percent. Not only the place of use can play a role, but also the country in which the lounge card was ordered. There are occasional exceptions due to special contracts if the Priority Pass was obtained through American Express and other providers. Participants in the lounge program are currently receiving emails that should be read carefully, because the Hong Kong company is informing them of the price increases on October 1, 2023. Those people who pay for their cards independently, i.e. do not receive them through a bank, will soon also have to pay higher annual fees.
