Nuremberg: Solar relief supplies flown to Africa

Relief supplies are repeatedly sent from Nuremberg Airport, for example during the pandemic, since the beginning of the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine or after the devastating earthquake in Turkey. Now a delegation from the city of Nuremberg has transported an important component for a school's solar power generation to Togo in Africa. Since 2018, Nuremberg has had a project partnership with the two Togolese cities of Sokodé and Aného. As part of this, Stephanie Wimmer from the Office for International Relations flew from Nuremberg to Togo via Paris for almost two weeks with an inverter in her luggage. The specialist delegation also included Nuremberg's climate protection officer Wolfgang Müller and the chairmen of two associations of the Togolese diaspora in Nuremberg, who support the project partnership. Specifically, it is about the power supply of a vocational school founded in 1923 with German help. The students are between 15 and 16 years old and are completing their technical college entrance qualification or an apprenticeship there, for example as a bricklayer, mechanic or electrician. Since 2018, the German Society for International Cooperation (GIZ) has been financing the development of a dual training system like the one in Germany. With the support of the Bavarian State Chancellery, the city of Nuremberg had already installed several photovoltaic systems in the two cities, including the system at the vocational school. However, this was damaged by a lightning strike, so the inverter had to be replaced. Nuremberg Airport helped with the formalities for transporting the technical equipment and wished the relief effort all the best.

Medical emergency: Emirates had to stop over in Munich with its A380

On the way from Dubai to London-Gatwick, the Airbus A380 with the registration A6-EOZ operated by Emirates Airline had to make an unscheduled stopover at Munich Airport on September 12, 2023. The reason for this is a medical emergency that occurred on board. The superjumbo was on its way to London-Gatwick under the flight number EK15. Since one of the passengers was anything but well, the captain decided to report a medical emergency and request a landing at the nearest airport suitable for Airbus A380s. Shortly before landing, which took place at 12:49 p.m. local time, the transponder code was changed to 7700. This is the indication for a general emergency. A spokesman for the largest airline in the United Arab Emirates said of the unscheduled stopover in Munich: "Emirates flight EK 15 from Dubai to London Gatwick on September 12th was diverted to Munich due to a passenger's medical emergency." A medical team was already on the ground waiting for the sick passenger. They took over the traveler and took him to a nearby hospital for further treatment. After a short stop, the long-haul aircraft then left Munich Airport and continued the flight to London Gatwick. The medical emergency caused a delay. Medical emergencies of various kinds occur on board commercial aircraft time and time again. From heart attacks to sudden fainting spells to the birth of babies, pretty much everything has happened. Depending on the severity, the captain must then decide whether the flight can be continued or not.
