Nuremberg: Swiss and Austrian Airlines are putting their presence to the test

At Nuremberg Airport, two connections to Star Alliance hubs are in serious trouble. Both Austrian Airlines and Swiss are putting their flights to the Bavarian airport under review. In other words, both Vienna and Zurich could be discontinued. The loss of the feeder flights to Munich, which were once offered by Lufthansa, was something both Nuremberg Airport and passengers could easily cope with. There are enough alternatives, especially with your own car, to get to Franz Josef Strauss Airport. Lufthansa itself has set up a so-called express bus, which can only be booked if you fly with the crane and/or a Star Alliance partner. According to reports, this has been well received by passengers after initial reluctance. However, it is a few kilometers further to Zurich and Vienna, so replacing it with a coach is definitely not an option. Both routes, which also function as a hub connection to the respective hub, are under review. Both Swiss and Austrian Airlines could discontinue these flights as early as the 2023/24 winter flight schedule. The Vienna route has a long history, which can be described simply as a back and forth. Austrian Airlines had handed it over to Eurowings and the aircraft used proved to be too big. It went back to AUA and due to the de Havilland Dash 8-400 being phased out, they have pretty much reached the same point. Air Berlin also once had this route in its portfolio, although in recent years it has mainly used turboprop aircraft from the Walter aviation company. Swiss has

Since the beginning of the year, 10,9 million (+39%) overnight stays have been counted. Vienna closed August 2023 with 1.646.000 overnight stays, an increase of 14% compared to the same month in 2022. In total, the establishments generated around 622 million euros during this period. With 320.000 overnight stays (+11%), Germany leads the list of the top 10 markets in August, followed by Austria (214.000, -2%), Italy (135.000, +18%), the USA (81.000, +5%), Spain (72.000, +19%), Poland (63.000, +23%), France (56.000, +15%), Great Britain (55.000, +11%), Israel (41.000, +26%) and Switzerland (28.000, +11%). The net overnight turnover of Vienna's accommodation establishments amounted to 110.245.747 euros in July - an increase of 29% compared to the same month in 2022. Amazon Air closes Leipzig/Halle location

So far, two Boeing 737-800 freighters have been stationed at Leipzig/Halle Airport under the Amazon Air brand. That will soon change, as the online company has decided to close the local logistics center. Just three years ago, Amazon opened the first regional air freight center in Europe at the airport. To do this, it stationed two Boeing 737-800F freight aircraft operated by ASL and built its own cargo center. This is now to be closed, and according to local media reports, around 400 jobs will be lost. This is not good news for MDF AG, the operator of Leipzig/Halle Airport, as Amazon Air is an important customer alongside DHL. It is expected that the airport will lose revenue amounting to several million euros per year. However, this is also seen as an opportunity, as the area previously used by Amazon will become free and could be rented to another customer. However, MDF AG does not yet have a successor for the online retail giant in mind. Since the Amazon cargo center was specifically tailored to the retailer's needs, it remains to be seen whether there is an interested party. In any case, Amazon wants to increasingly use freight routes by land in Europe, primarily by truck. The background to the US company's decision is probably that it may have miscalculated the volume or possible growth. Especially at the beginning of the Corona pandemic, demand was so high that it was hardly possible to get its own or rented cargo capacity. In the meantime, there has been a decline of around 70 percent.

Berlin Airport relies on artificial intelligence on the apron

At Berlin-Brandenburg Airport, so-called artificial intelligence is set to play a major role in handling operations in the future. The airport is the first German airport to use special software that is expected to lead to optimization. By using artificial intelligence, BER wants to increase service quality, punctuality and efficiency. At the same time, it sees itself as a pioneer, as it is the first German airport to opt for such a software solution. However, it remains to be seen whether this will prove its worth in the long term. "With stable processes and reliable flight schedules, an airport as an infrastructure operator contributes to a good travel experience for passengers. At BER, we are relying on an AI-based solution in the future to further increase the stability of the network and punctuality values. We expect the machine learning of the software to provide us with valuable insights that will give us additional impetus for further developing the processes in airport operations," explains Thomas Hoff Andersson, Chief Operations Officer at Berlin Brandenburg Airport GmbH. While the most recently introduced digital products at BER focused primarily on terminal operations, the focus is now on the 49 apron positions near the terminal at the capital airport. Together with the company Assaia, Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH is implementing a system across the board - the digital TurnaroundControl solution - with which handling processes on the apron are analyzed using self-learning software and relevant recommendations for action are given. This allows the work steps on the aircraft to be optimized, which leads to greater stability in the flight plan and increased punctuality. The product will be introduced gradually over the coming months. On the apron

New carwash service at Graz Airport

Graz Airport now has a new provider for cleaning motor vehicles, Parkwash24. The number of charging stations for electric cars has also been increased, the airport announced. While passengers are on their journey, they can have their vehicle washed and cleaned by Parkwash24. The service must be booked online in advance or can be used on site using a QR code key fob. A modern steam process means that only 3-4 liters of water are needed per cleaning and chemical cleaning agents are only used in exceptional cases. In order to be prepared for the increased demand for charging options for electric vehicles, Graz Airport partner APCOA has doubled the number of charging points in the parking garage. Charging stations are therefore available in the parking garage and in parking lots P0 and P1.
