Eurowings records positive figures

The German airline Eurowings can now end the year with positive figures after nine months. Last year the German airline reported a loss of millions. The German airline Eurowings has achieved a positive result after nine months. Specifically, the airline generated an EBIT of 147 million euros, after a loss of 136 million euros in the same period last year. These recent developments are primarily due to the strategic realignment, which led to a 42 percent increase in sales. Sales increased to over two billion euros. Kai Duve, Eurowings Managing Director of Human Resources, Finance and IT, reports the following: “Our teams deserve the highest recognition: they left no stone unturned during the crisis, fundamentally changed the fleet and flight schedule - with many new impulses, particularly in the tourism sector. In this way we have developed from an airline with a strong focus on domestic German operations into a leading European holiday airline. This success is first and foremost a strong team effort by our employees, which will foreseeably lead us into the profit zone in 2023 as a whole. After all the difficult years, this is a historic milestone for Eurowings."

El Al converts B777 into Preighter

The airline El Al is converting passenger planes into makeshift freighters in order to be able to fly relief supplies to Israel. For the time being, a Boeing 777 has been converted into a so-called pre-carrier by removing the seats. A Boeing 737 that was recently added to the fleet has also been converted into a makeshift freighter. The plane flies unspecified goods from Europe to Israel twice a day. Amsterdam: Many flights have to be canceled due to squalls

Münster/Osnabrück Airport exceeds pre-crisis volumes

Münster/Osnabrück Airport handled a total of 2023 passengers between April and October 841.000. Compared to the same period last year, the number of passengers increased by 16 percent and exceeded the volume recorded in 2019. The reasons for the significant growth in passengers can be seen primarily in an extremely strong tourist flight schedule with a focus on high-frequency service to particularly high-volume destinations and in very good aircraft utilization. The most popular travel destinations during the summer months included Palma de Mallorca with 263.000 passengers, Antalya with 239.000 and the Lufthansa destinations Munich and Frankfurt with a total of 161.000 passengers. During the autumn holidays in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, the airport had 149.600 passengers. According to the company, October 2023 was the busiest month since 2011. The second week of October recorded more than 35.000 passengers, making it the busiest week at FMO in 12 years.

Quarterly figures: Brussels Airlines achieves new record

The Lufthansa subsidiary Brussels Airlines can report an adjusted EBIT of 2023 million euros for the third quarter of 72, 21 million euros more than in the same period last year. It has never earned that much in three months. The adjusted EBIT for the first nine months of the year thus amounts to 59 million euros. The airline can now confidently state that a record profit is expected for the full year 2023. Between July and September, Brussels Airlines carried 2,4 million passengers on a total of almost 18.000 flights, with a seat load factor of 85,2%. 91 destinations in 40 countries were served.

Gulf Air will be focusing heavily on the Chinese market in the future

China will play an important role in Gulf Air's future strategy. The carrier has announced that it will expand to the People's Republic from January 2024. "We are excited about the opportunity to expand our presence in the Asia-Pacific region with new flights connecting Bahrain to the cities of Guangzhou and Shanghai in China," said Jeffrey Goh, Managing Director of Gulf Air Group Holding. "China is one of the fastest growing economies in the world and a global tourism market. The country is key to our strategy of calibrated network expansion. These flights will offer passengers greater choice and more flexible travel experiences and open up new opportunities for trade, tourism and cooperation that will benefit both countries." The flight schedule has been designed to ensure convenient connections between China and the destinations in the Middle East and Europe that Gulf Air serves, and between these destinations and China. The flights are operated with Boeing 787 Dreamliner and two service cabins, a business class cabin with one of the most spacious premium seats and an economy class cabin with the most modern seats in the industry.

Zurich puts new baggage facility into operation

Zurich-Kloten Airport will partially put the new baggage sorting system into operation on November 6, 2023. The old system and its successor will operate in parallel for several months. After the changeover was intensively prepared over several months, it is now ready for operational use. Zurich Airport AG has taken various measures to ensure that the transition phase goes as smoothly as possible. For example, more staff will be deployed during the changeover to monitor neuralgic points on site. The new baggage sorting system was necessary because the old system has reached the end of its life cycle. With the new system, Zurich Airport is ensuring that baggage allocation will continue to function reliably in the future. In addition, there are new EU regulations on security checks for checked baggage. The new infrastructure at Zurich Airport, which costs around 400 million francs, will be in use for 20 to 25 years. It is equipped with the latest technology and has significantly better energy efficiency than its predecessor. By the end of January 2024, the baggage sorting system will have been converted to the extent that 100 percent of checked baggage at Zurich Airport will be checked in accordance with the new EU regulations. In autumn 2024, the old infrastructure in the connecting tunnel towards Dock E and the baggage sorting system in Dock E will be replaced. The complete replacement of the old system is expected to take until 2026. The final changes will be completed by 2027. The baggage sorting system transports and sorts the baggage of all departing passengers and assigns it to the correct flight. In total, the new baggage sorting system has a conveyor line of around 25 kilometers. It is powered by 5500 motors.

Lufthansa Technik expects record profits

Lufthansa Technik expects to achieve a record result in the current financial year. Management assumes that the highest figure of 554 million euros achieved in the previous year can be exceeded again. "The aviation industry is recovering much faster than expected. We are benefiting from this because, thanks to the great commitment of our employees, we are able to exploit many of the resulting opportunities for ourselves," says William Willms, Chief Financial Officer of Lufthansa Technik. "We had a very strong summer, especially in our components division. There is a great demand for materials on the market. We continue to score points with customers, among other things, with better material availability compared to competitors." The bottom line is that the result after the third quarter of 2023, despite headwinds from the dollar exchange rate development and high inflation, is already an adjusted EBIT of 459 million euros (+7 percent). Lufthansa Technik's revenue increased to 4,8 billion euros (+20 percent). Lufthansa Technik is also successfully securing business for the future: by the end of September, the company had signed more than 580 new contracts this year, and in 2022 the figure was around 700.
