Nosebleed: Air Transat captain had to be replaced by an off-duty colleague

On November 22, 2023, the captain of Air Transat flight TS186 suffered such severe nosebleeds on the way to Punta Cana that he was no longer able to perform his duties. The passengers were lucky: another captain of the airline, who happened to be on board as a passenger, stepped in. The Airbus A330-200 took off from Toronto and at first everything looked like a completely normal vacation flight to the Dominican Republic. Suddenly, however, the captain on duty began to have severe nosebleeds, which he was only able to stop. After consulting his first officer, he declared himself no longer able to perform his duties. Another Air Transat Airbus A330-200 captain was in the passenger compartment. He was on his way on vacation. The first officer and the captain, who was restricted due to the nosebleed, asked him if he would be willing to take over as commander. He agreed and was in command from then on. In principle, it would not have been necessary to "complete" the cockpit crew, as the first officer is also a trained pilot, and for this very reason, if one of the two pilots should be absent for whatever reason, there are two pilots on duty. However, it often happens that if another pilot from the same airline with the appropriate type rating happens to be on board, he is asked for help when it is needed. In this specific situation, the first officer and captain thought it right to ask their colleague, who was actually off duty, for help.

Rental cars: continued high demand and rising prices

The rental car broker Sunny Cars has found that there is still high demand for rental cars. At the same time, the company is seeing prices rising again. The vehicles are particularly popular in Spain, Portugal and the USA. Rental car prices are rising again. After prices fell significantly in the fall, the price level has been rising steadily since October 2023. The average price in November was 464 euros - Sunny Cars last recorded costs of this amount in July 2023. Compared to the same month last year, however, it can be seen that the price level has fallen overall. In November 2022, prices were still around 514 euros. Greece is catching up: With almost five percent of all bookings, the country on the Aegean Sea is moving further up the top ten. The three leaders, however, remain unchanged: Spain is at the top of the scale, followed by Portugal and the USA. Around a third of all reservations were made through stationary travel agencies. "The rental car business remains a very short-term business even in winter," says Thorsten Lehmann, Managing Director of Sunny Cars. "The majority of all bookings in November were for the current month and December 2023." Only a sixth of the reservations received relate to the summer of 2024. While over 2022 bookings were received in November 37.000, the number is significantly higher this year with over 59.000 reservations. This strong start to the new financial year (beginning November 1, 2023) will go down in the history of Sunny Cars, because never before has the starting month been so high.

Ex-Schönefeld terminals: Ideas competition for reuse completed

Learning, working, exchanging ideas – in a district with a high quality of stay: Three renowned architecture and planning offices have developed creative and trend-setting concepts for the future use and design of the northern airport site. This marks the successful conclusion of an ideas competition launched by the airport company in August for the SXF 2.0 district at the former Terminal 5 of the BER. The airport company, which owns the land, was able to win COBE Berlin, FABRICations and MLA+ for this competition. All three proposals build on the history of the airport site and include the former Terminal 5 of the BER, for example, as a research-related event location or space for cultural encounters. The focus of the work is clearly on the broadest possible mix of uses for the commercial area, on conferences and meeting opportunities, prototyping and urban production, supplemented by temporary living and combined with art and culture. The future district is clearly geared towards ecology and sustainability. It offers flexible spaces for working and experimenting as well as green outdoor spaces with extensive offers for relaxation, meeting and exchange. All three offices also consider it important that the area is integrated into the community of Schönefeld in terms of both urban development and landscape. "I would like to thank the offices involved for their commitment and their inspiring ideas. All three designs have identified exciting possible uses for this aviation site with its proximity to the airfield. We see the concepts presented as very interesting, sustainable approaches for the further development of the area, which is still largely unused today," says Aletta von Massenbach, Chairwoman of the Management Board of Flughafen Berlin Brandenburg GmbH.

South Korea: Airlines must warn against illegal opening of emergency exits

Because passengers have repeatedly opened emergency exits without any apparent reason or even instructions from the crew, South Korea's Ministry of Transport now wants to oblige all carriers to explicitly point out that this is not permitted. An incident that occurred in May 2023 caused a stir. A man opened an emergency exit while approaching Daegu at an altitude of around 200 meters. Two other similar but less spectacular incidents have occurred this year alone. In South Korea, severe penalties are threatened.
