Ita Airways and Lufthansa could have to give up slots in Linate

According to a report in the Italian daily newspaper "Corriere della Sera", the EU Commission is also concerned about the planned takeover of Ita Airways by Lufthansa because a monopoly could arise on some routes to Germany and Switzerland. The following destinations from Mainland-Linate are affected: Frankfurt am Main, Düsseldorf and Stuttgart. From Rome-Fiumicino, it is Frankfurt am Main, Zurich and Munich. From Linate, the focus is also on Hamburg and Brussels, and from Fiumicino, Brussels, because the market share is particularly high. This means that Lufthansa and Ita Airways are not only at risk of having to give up take-off and landing rights to competitors on long-haul routes, but also on short-haul routes. The coveted slots in Linate are particularly likely to be sensitive, because a lot was already lost when Alitalia switched to Ita Airways.

Germany: GDL calls on train drivers to strike again

Rail travelers in Germany will soon need strong nerves again, because the GDL union is calling on train drivers of Deutsche Bahn, Transdev and AKN Eisenbahn GmbH to strike again. The work stoppages are scheduled to begin on Thursday, December 7, 2023 at 22:00 p.m. and will last for 24 hours for the time being. With this measure, the GDL wants to increase the pressure, as it is demanding higher wages for train drivers in particular. It is to be expected that there will again be significant effects on rail traffic, so that many trains will be cancelled. The railway companies affected assume that at least some kind of basic service can be maintained. Travelers should therefore regularly inform themselves about the current status of their planned rail connection. If necessary, other modes of transport such as airplanes or buses should also be considered. The train drivers' union has been involved in a wage dispute for some time, which is being fought with tough tactics. The GDL has already called for a warning strike before the first round of negotiations. On November 24, 2024, union representative Claus Weselsky declared the talks a failure. Added to this is the fact that the GDL is competing with the EVG. The latter employee representative concluded a collective agreement with Deutsche Bahn in August 2023. However, the GDL's demands go far beyond this.
