Azores Airlines will not be privatized for the time being

The airline Azores Airlines was actually supposed to be privatized. But that is not going to happen, at least for the time being. The purchase offers that the regional government received as a result of the tender were not very exciting, because two interested parties offered almost exactly the same amount. In addition, there will be a dispute with the opposition regarding the regional government's upcoming budget. It has now been announced that the privatization of Azores Airlines is being put on hold for the time being. The sale of Tap Air Portugal has also stalled.

Black ice at airports: Passengers have these rights

Freezing rain and black ice are ringing in the new week in many places in Germany, causing disruptions and accidents. There were also disruptions at Germany's second-largest airport in Munich. The reason for the problems was the risk of slippery conditions, which made take-offs and landings too dangerous. 650 flights were canceled last Tuesday as a result. Winter storms and snowfall are expected to cause delays or even cancellations in air traffic in Germany even more frequently in the coming months. But air travelers are not defenseless against the weather or the airlines, as passenger rights expert Julián Navas from AirHelp explains: "Passengers affected by flight cancellations are entitled to alternative transportation or a full refund of the flight price. Airlines usually offer rebooking on an alternative flight. Domestic flights can optionally be rebooked onto a train ticket. If the airline does not take action on its own initiative or cannot offer suitable alternative transportation, the affected passengers can look for an alternative themselves and bill the airline for the costs. In order to ensure that their costs are reimbursed, affected passengers should not make any rebookings to bus, train or other flights without consulting the airline. If the delay is more than five hours or if the flight is scheduled to take place at a later time, the airline is also obliged to refund the full price of the ticket. If the delay is more than two hours, the operating airline must provide passengers with meals and drinks at the airport. In addition, two phone calls or two emails must be made possible. If necessary, the airline must also provide accommodation.

Münster/Osnabrück: Contract extension for Rainer Schwarz

The Supervisory Board of Münster/Osnabrück Airport has decided that the contract with Managing Director Rainer Schwarz will be extended early for another year. The manager will therefore be at the helm of the German airport until at least the end of 2025. "The extremely positive development of the FMO in the post-Corona period, both in terms of traffic and business management, shows that Prof. Schwarz has set the right course for the FMO. In the next two years, it is now important to continue and stabilize this course. In addition, important decisions must be made during this period for the transformation to a climate-neutral airport," said Supervisory Board Chairman Martin Sommer.

Ita takeover: EU Commission calls on competitors to comment

For several months now, it has been apparent that the EU Commission may not approve Lufthansa's entry into Ita Airways, which is to lead to a complete takeover in several steps, without significant conditions. Now the competition authority is calling on competitors to comment. Just recently, various unions appealed to the European competition authorities, in which, to put it simply, they demanded that the deal be approved as quickly as possible and with as few conditions as possible. The background to this is that a kind of preliminary procedure was carried out before Lufthansa officially registered, and it has been leaked that the EU Commission could impose significant conditions. For example, the surrender of take-off and landing rights for transatlantic traffic from Germany, but also at the Italian airports Rome-Fiumicino and Milan-Linate on short-haul routes was mentioned. Traffic between Italy and Germany and Italy and Switzerland in particular seems to be under close scrutiny, because on some routes there is little or no competition at all. There are also a total of six routes on which there is no competition at all. These are linked to the Ita hubs Milan-Linate and Rome-Fiumicino as well as the Lufthansa hubs Frankfurt and Munich and the Swiss hub Zurich. These routes seem to be of particular interest to the EU Commission. However, it is questionable whether there are any other airlines interested in flying on these routes, which are already frequently used by transfer passengers. The EU Commission officially announced that it is assuming that, after a preliminary examination, the intended deal will fall under the so-called merger control regulation.

London: British Airways announces Stansted comeback

After a long break, British Airways is resuming flights from London Stansted in the 2024 summer flight schedule. Three destinations will be served with Embraer 190s by its subsidiary BA Cityflyer, which otherwise mainly flies from London City Airport. From May 18, 2024, there will be scheduled flights from London Stansted to Ibiza, Nice and Florence on weekends. It was recently announced that BA Cityflyer will increase the capacity of its Embraer 190s from 98 seats to 106. For passengers, this means that legroom will be reduced. The BA subsidiary wants to expand its offering with the existing fleet, as more passengers can be transported per flight. London Stansted Airport has long played only a minor role for British Airways. The low-cost airline Ryanair dominates this airport. The IAG Group focuses on Heathrow, Gatwick and CIty airports in the capital of the United Kingdom. The last time there was activity from Stansted was on a small scale before the Corona pandemic. "I am delighted to welcome British Airways back to London Stansted and look forward to the start of scheduled flights from the airport in May next year," said Ciaran Brannigan, Commercial Director of London-Stansted. Another route that British Airways will serve from London's third-largest airport in the 2024 summer flight schedule is Calvi. However, this is not a scheduled route, but a charter order that will be fulfilled for the tour operator Corsican Places. The group subsidiary BA Euroflyer will serve the Agadir destination from London Gatwick Airport from March 31, 2024. This is the second Moroccan destination that the Gatwick branch will fly to.

Travel prices in the Czech Republic and Slovakia increased by ten percent

Interrupted only by the Corona pandemic, Czech and Slovak travel providers have been recording a strong increase in travel to warm water destinations during the cold season for several years. Statistics from Dvolena.cz show that seven percent more bookings were made in November and December 2023. In the two countries mentioned, these two months are considered to be the months with the highest bookings for the respective winter season. In contrast to Germany or Austria, the trend is traditionally that bookings are made at much shorter notice. The local airlines and tour operators had already adapted to this before the Corona pandemic. Nevertheless, the Brno-based Student Agency, the parent company of the rail and long-distance bus operator Regiojet, appeals to people to book early, as the range on the market is limited. As a rule, customers would book their Christmas and New Year's Eve holidays in November and early December. For those who want to travel in January, December seems to be the usual booking time. The most common vacation is between five days and two weeks. Four-star hotels with all-inclusive services dominate the accommodation, which corresponds to similar preferences as for summer holidays. The most popular destinations include the nearby exotics such as the Cape Verde Islands, Oman and the United Arab Emirates, as they offer an attractive mix of proximity and exoticism. Among the more distant exotic destinations, destinations such as Cuba, Vietnam, Zanzibar, Mauritius, the Dominican Republic and Thailand are popular because of their unique cultures and breathtaking natural landscapes. Student Agency also has to admit that there has been a setback in the area of Egypt trips, which are otherwise very popular with Czechs and Slovaks.
