Association Barig also criticizes the planned increase in the German ticket tax

The industry association Barig (Board of Airline Representatives in Germany) is strongly critical of the increase in air traffic tax planned by the German federal government. In this regard, it agrees with the Federal Association of the German Aviation Industry. “An increase in air traffic tax would be a fatal signal for air traffic, the German economy and Germany's connectivity itself. The fee burden on Germany as an aviation location is already enormous by international comparison. The consequences: Within Europe, Germany is at the bottom of the list when it comes to the recovery of air traffic after the corona pandemic. In other countries, the 2019 level has already been reached and in some cases even exceeded, but Germany is still lagging behind. New cost increases, such as an increased air traffic tax, would further exacerbate the situation and mean that the range of services offered by airlines in Germany will only develop very hesitantly. This can have far-reaching economic consequences. Air traffic is a key economic driver and secures mobility, logistics and the movement of goods as well as jobs. Especially in difficult times, which are characterized by inflation and volatile economic development, planning security and future prospects are valuable prerequisites for the prosperity of society as a whole. It is therefore highly absurd to place ever greater burdens on sectors such as air transport, as international connectivity is indispensable for economic recovery and global supply chains. In addition, the constant enormous increase in the cost of air transport also means that important investments, such as the decarbonization of flying, are being hampered. In addition, inevitably higher prices also restrict private mobility; this has a particular impact on family travel. In view of these considerable burdens on the economy and society, politicians should do everything they can to ensure that air transport is not

Annual figures: Frankfurt 15,9 percent below pre-crisis volumes

Germany's largest commercial airport, Frankfurt am Main, had a total of 2023 million travelers in the recently concluded year 59,4. In direct comparison with the previous period, the figure increased by 21,3 percent, but was 15,9 percent below the value achieved by Fraport AG in 2019. "2023 was another challenging year for the aviation industry, especially in Europe. In addition to the ongoing war in Ukraine, there were also airspace restrictions due to the NATO exercise 'Air Defender', which was carried out in Germany. The complex and interconnected system of international air traffic was also disrupted by a series of strikes in 2023, including strikes by French air traffic controllers. Despite these disruptions and in a joint effort with our system partners, we managed to further stabilize operations in Frankfurt last year. Our traffic performance for 2023 clearly shows that demand is recovering from the Covid 19 pandemic and that people's desire to travel is unbroken. That is why I am optimistic for the new year 2024,” explains Fraport CEO Stefan Schulte. Flight movements in Frankfurt increased by 2023 percent year-on-year to 12,6 takeoffs and landings in 430.436 (comparison 2019: minus 16,2 percent). Cumulative maximum takeoff weights (MTOW) also increased by 11,4 percent year-on-year to around 27 million tons (comparison 2019: minus 15,3 percent). Cargo handling (consisting of air freight and airmail) in FRA fell by 2023 percent year-on-year to around 3,9 million tons in 1,9 (comparison 2019: minus 9,3 percent). This slowdown was due, among other things, to airspace restrictions across Europe and the

Next stage victory for Al Jaber in the legal dispute against Austrian Airlines

Austrian Airlines and Mohamed Bin Issa Al Jaber have been involved in a legal dispute for many years. The entrepreneur originally wanted to join the carrier, which the then AUA boss Alfred Ötsch had publicly described as "rehabilitated". Shortly after the former general director's statement, however, it came to light that AUA was on the verge of bankruptcy. Initially, the deal was for around 80 million euros, which Al Jaber wanted to invest in Austrian Airlines. He was already publicly celebrated as the savior of AUA, but after he himself said he realized how dire the financial situation of Austrian Airlines really is, he withdrew his offer. A legal dispute lasting years followed in the form of mutual lawsuits and accusations. The matter could prove very expensive for Austrian Airlines and indirectly for the Lufthansa Group, because AUA lost in court last year. Last week, the Vienna Higher Regional Court rejected the airline's appeal. When asked, Austrian Airlines simply stated that the judgment was not yet final and that it could therefore not comment due to the ongoing proceedings. Al Jaber wants to claim up to one billion euros in damages. The sum is said to consist of direct and indirect losses that he suffered during the 15-year legal dispute. A significant part of this is likely to be legal and court costs, as these are enormous given the high value of the dispute. Long-standing legal dispute is not yet over "The courts have once again proven me right that the management of Austrian Airlines acted unlawfully and to the detriment of all shareholders - and ultimately also the
