DeliveryMichel delivers medication by drone

For residents of the Michelstadt districts served by the LieferMichel pilot project, the year begins with two pieces of good news: They can continue to have small errands delivered conveniently and CO2-neutrally by drone and cargo bike. In addition, the range is being expanded to include non-prescription medication. The extension of the project until the end of March makes it possible to pursue the main project goals over a longer period of time. These goals include the implementation of safe drone flight operations in unrestricted airspace, even during the winter months, and the analysis of demand for delivery services in rural areas. With the Bären-Apotheke from Erbach, a product category that many residents have explicitly requested is now being added. The pharmacy is integrated into the LieferMichel platform and offers a selection of non-prescription medication. In addition, users have been able to choose from a large range of goods from the local REWE center since the start of the project. In addition, the Odenwaldbox, a provider of regional products, and SV Darmstadt 98 with a selection of fan articles have joined the platform over the course of the project. "We are always looking for ways and means to offer our customers an even better shopping experience and to improve local care options. Here in rural areas, the long distances often make it difficult for sick people to get their medication quickly. We are therefore very happy to be gaining initial experience with drone-based deliveries as part of the LieferMichel project," comments Frank Buffleb, pharmacist and owner of the Bären-Apotheke in Erbach.

Ita Airways entry: EU Commission before Phase II review

At the moment, it does not look as if Lufthansa will be able to avoid a Phase II review by the EU Commission when it plans to take over Ita Airways. The latest concessions may not be enough for the competition authorities. The Reuters agency reports, citing people familiar with the matter, that an in-depth review could be initiated, which could take up to another four months. Italian media also write that everything points to a Phase II review. Lufthansa is said to have offered the EU Commission the transfer of take-off and landing rights from/to Milan-Linate. However, the crane group does not want to make any changes on long-haul routes and this could be a thorn in the side of the competition authorities.

Trade unions: UFO board team is complete again

The flight attendants' union UFO has announced that the board team is once again fully staffed with seven members. Due to resignations, by-elections had become necessary. Now, through an internal board election, the by-elected board member, Sara Grubisic, has been appointed deputy chairwoman. Grubisic is a lawyer and practiced law for many years. She flies for Lufthansa as a purser. She has already been able to use her legal expertise to the benefit of the union in the UFO Principles Commission, which has been dealing with statutory issues of the organization since 2019, and in the UFO Collective Bargaining Commission at Lufthansa. Last year, she was elected to the Supervisory Board of the Lufthansa Group as an employee representative. For UFO, it was therefore out of the question that Grubisic would also be responsible for collective bargaining policy on the board side. Gisela-Annette Beeck Acosta and Kai Uwe Fuelle-Netzer were also elected to the board. Both fly as pursers for Lufthansa.

Preparing to join Skyteam: SAS starts Atlanta flights

The airline SAS appears to be already preparing for its upcoming move to the Skyteam airline alliance. From mid-June 2024, it will operate daily nonstop flights between Copenhagen and Atlanta. The choice of the US destination does not seem to be a coincidence, as Delta Air Lines has a major hub at this airport. The carrier in question is a future Skyteam partner of SAS. Thus, the addition of the Atlanta route can also be interpreted as a precursor to future membership in the aforementioned airline alliance. SAS is a founding member of the competing Star Alliance, of which it is currently a member. However, it will leave this alliance, as Air France-KLM is also a member of a consortium that has been awarded the contract to join. As part of the announcement, it was also stated that SAS will move to Skyteam, which also includes Delta, Air France and KLM. From June 17, 2024, SAS will offer daily flights between Copenhagen and Atlanta. It is quite conceivable that connections to the Delta hub could follow from other airports in Scandinavia. At the moment there are a few decentralized New York routes that are served with Airbus A321LR. It is likely that these will be coordinated with Delta in the future so that they fit optimally into the US airline's route network and travelers have feeder flights and connections available.

Toilet door on Spicejet flight got stuck: man had to wait in the toilet

Airplanes are often overbooked and one or two of those affected have probably already considered sitting on the toilet so that they can still fly. A man on a domestic flight in India was forced to use the toilet completely against his will. Shortly after take-off of Spiecejet flight SG-268, operated by a Boeing 737-800 with the registration VT-SGV, the passenger had to go to the toilet. He waited for the fasten seatbelt signal to go off and then went to a washroom to do his business. So far, everything was completely normal and everyday. But what happened next was more like something out of a bad horror film, because when the man tried to open the door again, it simply wouldn't open. It was stuck. After a few attempts, the passenger in this predicament pressed the emergency button to alert the flight attendants. They were there quickly, but they couldn't help, because the stubborn toilet door couldn't be opened from the outside either. A note was written under the door to the traveler, on which a reassuring message could be read. He was asked to stay calm, because they would be landing soon anyway and a technician would take care of his release immediately afterwards. That's exactly what happened. Why the door to the lavatory of the Boeing 737-800, which was on its way from Mumbai to Bengaluru on Tuesday, January 16, 2024, got stuck and couldn't be opened from the inside or outside is unclear. In any case,

USA: Court bans merger between Jetblue and Spirit

The planned merger of Jetblue and Spirit Airlines has become a distant prospect, as a US district judge has prohibited the planned merger. He thereby confirmed the view of the US competition authority. For the first time in 20 years, there has been considerable resistance to consolidation in the aviation industry in the United States. The matter is doubly complicated for Spirit Airlines, as the company initially wanted to merge with Frontier Airlines. This failed due to resistance from Spirit shareholders, who saw a better future with Jetblue. The competition authority, which is part of the government, has prohibited the merger. For this reason, the matter was brought before the courts. The responsible district court has not approved the merger. The ruling can be appealed, so the final word has not yet been spoken.

Freezing rain: Nothing worked in Saarbrücken

Due to severe winter weather conditions, the German airport Saarbrücken has suspended operations completely on January 17, 2024. All planned flights had to be cancelled. The service predicted that there could be heavy freezing rain in the region. There may still be delays and cancellations in Saarbrücken on Thursday, January 18, 2024.
