Higher salaries for pilots: company agreement concluded at Discover Airlines

The works council of Discover Airlines was able to conclude a works agreement with management on pilot salaries. This is retroactive to January 1, 2024 and provides for higher salaries. The Cockpit Association is not entirely happy with the fact that only a works agreement could be concluded, but not a collective agreement. One of the criticisms is that the wage tables contain the remuneration that was demanded by the VC. According to Discover Airlines, some of these are also higher than the demands of the Cockpit Association. Both the VC and the Lufthansa subsidiary emphasize that they are still pursuing the goal of concluding collective agreements. The Cockpit Association has indicated that they could call for strikes again if no new offer is presented in the negotiations. To what extent the latest works agreement will influence the possible participation of the Discover pilots is currently completely unclear.

Bangkok: 63-year-old died in Lufthansa Airbus A380

On February 8, 2024, a tragic death occurred on board the Airbus A773 with the registration D-AIML on Lufthansa flight LH380 (Bangkok-Munich). A passenger was not feeling particularly well before departure, which is why he was examined by a doctor. The doctor was of the opinion that the 63-year-old German citizen was fit enough to take the flight. But during the flight, his condition suddenly deteriorated: the passenger initially spat blood. The cabin crew provided first aid and immediately called a doctor. Despite intensive efforts by the doctor, who happened to be on board, the passenger was unfortunately declared dead. The captain then decided to return to Bangkok. There, the long-haul aircraft was able to land safely and the Thai authorities took over the body. Lufthansa confirmed the incident, but did not want to comment on the circumstances reported in the Thai media regarding the spitting of blood. In any case, the local public prosecutor's office has opened an investigation, which is generally the norm in such cases. According to reports, the doctor who declared the passenger "fit to fly" will also be questioned after the autopsy.

Lufthansa Cargo is launching additional North American routes

The Lufthansa Group is expanding its cargo connections from Brussels and Frankfurt am Main to North America in the 2024 summer flight schedule. From April 3, 2024, Lufthansa Cargo will be flying from Frankfurt am Main to Chicago-O'Hare on Mondays and Wednesdays. There will be a stopover in Brussels for loading and unloading. From May 6, 2024, there will be a cargo-only connection from Frankfurt to Monterrey, with a stopover in Mexico City (Felipe Angeles). This route will initially be served once a week. Oman Air will join Oneworld in the second half of 2024

The airline Oman Air expects to be able to complete its planned entry into the Oneworld aviation alliance in the second half of 2024. Some time ago it was announced that the carrier would join the alliance around Alaksa Airlines, American Airlines and British Airways. It will be member number 14 of the alliance, which recently celebrated its 25th anniversary. The Russian S7 Airlines is not included because its membership is suspended due to the war in Ukraine and the resulting sanctions against Russia. Oman Air cannot yet give an exact date of accession, but it will meet all requirements from June 30, 2024. Admission is then expected to take place in the second half of 2024.

Flynas postpones Jeddah-Berlin indefinitely

The Saudi Arabian low-cost airline Flynas has postponed the start of non-stop flights between Jeddah and Berlin. The original plan was to start flying at the beginning of the 2024 summer flight schedule period. But that will not happen - at least not for the foreseeable future. The portal Airliners.de writes that sales for summer 2024 have been stopped and that flights will not be available in the reservation system until September 2024. Berlin-Brandenburg Airport told the specialist portal that it currently has no final confirmation of the start. Flynas did not want to comment.

Jetblue/Spirit merger: appeal hearing in June 2024

The Boston court responsible for the appeal hearing regarding the prohibited merger of Jetblue Airways with Spirit Airlines has announced that the case will be heard in June 2024. This means that the two carriers' hopes of a quick decision are fading. The planned merger was prohibited by the competition authority. A lawsuit was filed against this and a federal judge did not give the green light either. Jetblue Airways and Spirit Airlines are appealing against this decision. The US Court of Appeals for the First Circuit announced that it will deal with the case in June 2024. It has since become known that Spirit Airlines' financial situation is said to be strained. Jetblue Airways has since informed shareholders that it is preparing for the planned takeover not to be completed. At the same time, both companies are pushing - also publicly - for approval as soon as possible. But that is not what is looking like at the moment.

Qanot Sharq is expanding its presence in the EU

The airline Qanot Sharq intends to gradually increase its presence in the European Union from March 2024. To this end, three new destinations are gradually being added. From March 9, 2024, the airline will fly to Madrid twice a week with Airbus A330-300. On the outbound flight, there will be a stopover in Urgench. The return flights will be non-stop. On March 31, 2024, the Tashkent-Budapest flight will be reactivated and will be operated twice a week with Airbus A320s. As of April 3, 2024, Qanot Sharq will start non-stop flights between Tashkent and Milan-Malpensa, which will be operated with Airbus A321neos. The return flights will be operated with a stopover in Urgench. Two weekly rotations are planned for the time being. Non-stop flights between Tashkent and Prague (vice versa) will be operated at the same frequency with the same type of aircraft. The first flight is scheduled for April 18, 2024.
