Charter: Aegean takes on Heraklion-Erfurt

In the 2024 summer flight schedule, Aegean Airlines will operate a non-stop connection between Erfurt and Heraktion. This is a charter route on behalf of a tour operator. Tui starts the new financial year with black numbers

The travel group Tui was able to increase sales by 2023 percent to 15 billion euros in the first quarter of the current financial year (October to December 4,3). The listed group can report an adjusted EBIT of six million euros. Traditionally, this is negative due to the weaker winter season. Company boss Sebastian Ebel explains that the measures introduced are bearing fruit and that it has therefore been possible to make a profit. At the same time, Tui is also likely to have benefited from being able to enforce higher prices on customers. These were increased by an average of four percent. In terms of bookings, the volume was increased by eight percent. Ebel predicts that the current financial year - in terms of operating profit - will be able to end with an increase of at least 25 percent. If you look at the individual business areas, cruises stand out. In this segment, average rates rose by 17 percent to 204 euros. However, there were also fewer travelers on board, as compared to the previous period, a decline from 2,4 million to 2,3 million passenger days was recorded. In general, the Tui Group was also able to grow in the area of ​​​​own-operated hotels. The tour operators in Austria, Germany, Poland and Switzerland together recorded a profit of 1,3 million euros in the first quarter of the current financial year. By comparison: a year ago, this segment was stuck with a loss.

Annual figures: Play continues to be deep in the red

The Iceland-based low-cost airline Play posted a loss of $35,2 million last year. Revenue was $282 million. According to the airline, the loss was halved compared to the previous period. The airline had 1,52 million passengers on board, almost doubling the figure achieved in 2022. Nevertheless, the airline was operating at a loss of $20,7 million. The airline also announced that it had withdrawn from two leasing contracts that were supposed to lead to deliveries in 2025. Istanbul Airport wants to make three runways usable at the same time

Istanbul Airport is currently preparing to allow three aircraft to take off and land at the same time in the future. This will significantly increase the capacity of Turkey's largest airport. The new airport in the Bosporus metropolis is one of the largest in the world, but the runway system does not come anywhere close to making full use of the available capacity. The Turkish Transport Minister, Abdulkadir Uraloğlu, explained that intensive work has been underway since 2022 to ensure that three aircraft can use the runways at the same time in the future. The project is called "Simultaneous Independent Triple Parallel Runway Operations" and is intended to ensure that the existing infrastructure of the major airport can be used as optimally as possible. A side effect is that possible expansions can be put on hold because they are not yet necessary - at least for the time being. According to the Turkish Transport Minister, it will be the first European airport where three runways can be used for takeoffs and landings at the same time. The controllers are to be trained from March 2024 and trial operations are to start shortly thereafter. This measure is intended to increase the annual capacity of Istanbul Airport from around 90 million passengers to around 200 million travelers per year. The government also wants to give itself some breathing room, as the new Istanbul Airport is by no means finished. All current projects, including the expansion to six runways, are to be completed by 2028. The new system should also mean that the schedule can be extended for cost reasons. The metropolis of Istanbul currently has three commercial airports.

Airbus Canada sources aircraft doors in India

The previous record, which was achieved in 2022, was exceeded again in the 2023 season. According to Statistics Austria, Austrian campsites had around 8,3 million overnight stays last year, thus exceeding the record achieved in 2022 by six percent. However, the growth is not distributed linearly across the federal states; there are sometimes considerable differences. Camping was most common in Carinthia (2.532.941 overnight stays) - despite a slight decline in the number of overnight stays compared to 2022. Tyrol is just behind with 2.300.816 overnight stays. In third place is Salzburg (951.283), followed by Styria (716.583). In Upper Austria and Burgenland, camping was similarly frequent, with around 497.072 and 478.518 overnight stays respectively. Vorarlberg counted 455.223 and Lower Austria 292.896 overnight stays, while in Vienna 104.222 overnight stays were spent on campsites or parking pitches. In the 2023 camping season, site operators in eastern Austria in particular were able to enjoy significantly more overnight stays: they increased the most compared to the previous year - by around 40 percent in Burgenland and around 60 percent in Vienna.
