Federal Army: Ministry of Defense is investing again in Vienna

The Council of Ministers decided to hand over the military part of the "Meidlinger Barracks", also known as the Heckenast-Burian command building. As part of the efficient site use and development planned by the Federal Ministry of Defense in the area of the Vienna site, four hectares of the barracks, which are no longer needed for military purposes, are to be sold to Bundesimmobiliengesellschaft mbH (BIG). The employees of the Federal Army were informed of this plan in advance and will move to new locations at the end of 2024. "With the proceeds from our barracks, we want to modernize other locations in Vienna. Our goal 'Mission Forward' will thus be consistently pursued and other construction projects of the Federal Army will be realized. New buildings and large-scale modernizations have now been possible in Vienna for more than ten years. Because only with well-equipped infrastructure can we create the basis for a more modern and operational Federal Army," said Defense Minister Klaudia Tanner. "With Federal Minister Tanner, the renewal of military properties in Vienna is gaining momentum for the first time in ten years. For example, we opened the new road for military facilities together with the Minister of Defense this year. Our Austrian Federal Army in Vienna is being modernized and this is an important step for our soldiers and employees," says the Viennese military commander, Brigadier Kurt Wagner. A total of 47,7 million euros, which will be made available as a result of this measure, will be used in future infrastructure planning as part of the "Reconstruction Plan 2032" and for the modernization of Austrian Federal Army properties. Milan: Ryanair wins lawsuit against Lastminute

In an appeal, a Milan court has dismissed the lawsuits brought by the OTAs Lastminute in Viaggiare against the low-cost airline Ryanair. The two companies had complained that the low-cost airline was of the opinion that they alone had the right to distribute their own tickets. The low-cost airline has signed a total of three official distribution agreements with OTAs in recent weeks. It is now cooperating with Kiwi, Weloveholidays and the Tui Group. It is taking legal action against other companies. Ryanair accuses the OTAs of charging significant surcharges on additional services such as checked baggage and of not providing passengers' contact details. The court in Milan confirmed that Ryanair's exclusive online distribution model was justified "in order to contain operating costs and eliminate the costs associated with intermediary ticket sales. This has contributed to the application of competitive tariffs - which undoubtedly also benefit consumers - and the possibility of having a direct communication channel with them when they need information and updates about flights. So no harm to users was found…”

Cologne/Bonn Airport is allowed to use the closed parking area again

Cologne/Bonn Airport is now allowed to use an area in the area of apron A that has been closed off by the authorities for a long time for parking aircraft. The corresponding planning approval notice has been served. In 2007, Cologne/Bonn Airport GmbH added a concrete section to apron A for parking aircraft. This had already been used since the 60s for parking machines on grass. This section was officially approved in 2007 on the basis of the legal situation in force at the time, without a planning approval procedure being necessary. In 2014, following a lawsuit, the Federal Administrative Court objected to the actions of the approval authority and prohibited further use of the section until an aviation law approval procedure had been completed. As a result, the airport decided in 2015 to initiate the planning approval procedure, which for the first time also included the implementation of an environmental impact assessment. "We welcome the fact that the planning approval procedure has now been completed. The measures contained therein are intended in particular to organize the operational processes at the airport in the best possible way for the benefit of our passengers and the airlines. For example, a part of apron A that has not been usable in recent years is now available again for parking aircraft near the terminal. This avoids unnecessary towing operations, saves resources and improves operational processes," says Thilo Schmid, CEO of Cologne/Bonn Airport GmbH. "The planning approval decision also secures the binding basis for the further positive development of the site and creates planning security. This is of central importance for the airport, but also for its partners and the companies located here and secures jobs in the long term," says Schmid.

Netherlands: DDA Classic Airlines decommissions historic Douglas DC-3

For financial reasons, the Dutch DDA Classic Airlines will have to stop operating the historic "Prinses Amalia", a Douglas DC-3, this year. Flight operations are to be discontinued on October 1, 2024. The PH-PBA was first registered for civil use in the Netherlands in 1946. Previously, this aircraft had the military registration 42-100971. In 1975, this Douglas DC-3 was initially decommissioned and taken to a museum at Schiphol Airport. It took a few years, but in 1994 the historic aircraft was transferred to the United Kingdom for restoration. In 1998, the DC-3 was ceremoniously handed over to the Dutch Dakota Association (DDA). Their DDA Classic Airlines is still responsible for its operation and maintenance to this day. At the beginning of last year, a sponsor who had supported the non-profit organization strongly for seven years was lost. In the meantime, the costs for the hangar, maintenance and insurance have also increased dramatically. You also have to pay high fees for using the runways at most airports. All in all, the costs are getting out of hand for the club's board of directors. It has now been decided that the PH-PBA will be shut down at the end of the 2024 summer season. This year, those interested may have their last chance to fly with this historically valuable aircraft. Incidentally, according to DDA Classic Airlines, even obtaining fuel is no longer so easy, as many airports no longer offer the Avgas required for the piston engines - and which contains a lot of lead. This means that you are

ÖAMTC test: Many high-visibility vests are defective

The ÖAMTC and its partner organizations have examined 14 high-visibility vests in terms of their reflective strength. The result is sobering: 30 percent of the models do not come anywhere close to fulfilling their purpose. ÖAMTC technician Steffan Kerbl: "High-visibility vests can save lives - if they work as they should. Inadequate vests, on the other hand, are life-threatening because, in the worst case, you only realize that you are not seen when it is too late." This applies to all road users: car drivers who, for example, get out of their car in the event of a breakdown, pedestrians, cyclists, children - for all of them, seeing and being seen is essential. 14 high-visibility vests for children and adults from online retailers were tested. "First, we carried out a quick test using a reference card to check whether the reflective strength of the reflective elements - often also called 'luminous strips' - complies with the legal standard. That was the case with nine of the 14 models, the rest did not reflect nearly enough light to meet the standard," explains Kerbl. A further test in a certified light laboratory confirmed the results of the quick test - only one children's vest that had previously failed passed the more detailed test under laboratory conditions. How well does my vest reflect? ÖAMTC recommends self-testing When buying a vest, you should make sure that there is a reference to the standard (EN ISO 20471) - usually a look at the sewn-in label is enough. If you order online, ÖAMTC expert Steffan Kerbl advises reading the product description carefully - if the standard is not stated there, you should look elsewhere. Regardless of whether you already have it, online or in the

IFES: Beond relies on VR headsets from Apple

The Maldives airline Beond, which specializes in pure business class flights, wants to loan its passengers virtual reality headsets from the manufacturer Apple. The aim is to present highlights about the island state, entertainment programs and advertising about the airline. Beond's planes are currently not equipped with state-of-the-art IFE systems. Apparently they want to take an alternative route, because management hopes that the Apple Vision Pro headsets will provide a better experience for travelers. They also claim that they will be the first carrier in the world to loan this VR product to passengers on board. There is an in-flight entertainment system on board, but this is repeatedly criticized because it is not state-of-the-art. According to Beond, this will be remedied by the Apple headsets. These will provide sights, landscapes and information about the Maldives. Furthermore, it will be possible to access films and games that are otherwise available in the built-in IFES via the VR headsets. In addition, Beond wants to present information and background information about its own airline, which is actually nothing more than self-promotion. The business class carrier was launched last year. In the DA-CH region, the first destinations served are Munich and Zurich. Due to the insufficient range of the aircraft used, a refueling stop is necessary. The start was bumpy, as demand was initially far below the economic limit. The flight schedule was therefore massively reduced, but Beond emphasizes that this is merely a matter of "seasonal fluctuations". In Europe, the company also wants to serve Milan-Malpensa in the future.

Winter travel destinations: These have the fewest flight delays and cancellations

For anyone wanting to escape the winter temperatures in Germany, AirHelp, the largest organization for air passenger rights, has investigated which destinations are easiest to reach without flight problems. In these places, passengers can not only count on sunshine, but also a relaxing flight. For this purpose, flight cancellations and delays in the winter months of December and January over the last two years were examined. Thailand and Qatar performed best among the sunny destinations. Thailand is one of the most popular travel destinations in the world: tropical beaches, ancient ruins and temperatures of up to 30 degrees attract many holidaymakers to the country in winter. Around 75.300 holidaymakers traveled from Germany to the Southeast Asian country in December and January - 19 percent of them were affected by flight delays. In addition to Thailand, Qatar is also a good choice for a trip in winter: here the cancellation and delay rate was also 19 percent. The two countries therefore share first place in the study. Although Thailand and Qatar performed best, one in five passengers had to contend with cancellations or delays. With a total of 24.300 passengers and a delay rate of 21,5 percent, Oman came in third. Here, holidaymakers can expect plenty of sun and minor delays during the German winter. Vietnam secured first place in winter 2022/2023 Whether impressive landscapes or culinary delights: If you want to escape the winter blues in Germany, Vietnam is the right place for you. Last winter, in December 2022 and January 2023, only 9,9 percent of the 24.800 passengers were affected by flight problems.
