ASN: Aviation accidents in Russia have increased significantly

In 2023, the number of incidents in Russian air traffic increased significantly. According to an analysis by the Aviation Safety Network, there were 196 accidents, 25 percent more than the previous year. The organization attributes this exponential increase in particular to the lack of spare parts. Furthermore, Western manufacturers are not likely to provide support or supply components directly to Russian suppliers. It is also noteworthy that of the 196 incidents, an impressive 150 involved larger aircraft that are also used in passenger traffic. The organization also states that it is considered a safety risk that some airlines are obtaining "homemade" spare parts from Iran or having their aircraft serviced there. For the current year, 2024, an increase in accidents in Russian civil aviation is expected.

Vida and the works council are again calling on AUA staff to work meetings

The Vida union and the On-Board Works Council are once again calling on Austrian Airlines' flight crew to attend a staff meeting on Friday, March 8, 2024. Just last Friday, there was one that had a serious impact on flight operations: 138 flights were cancelled. For legal reasons, Austrian Airlines is not allowed to conduct negotiations on the new collective agreement itself, but must be represented by the Chamber of Commerce. In theory, the WKO and ÖGB could also conclude an agreement over the head of AUA management, but it is very unlikely that this will happen. Just last Friday, the On-Board Works Council and the Vida union held a staff meeting for Austrian Airlines' flight crew. This provided information on the current state of affairs regarding negotiations on higher wages. The event culminated in a spontaneous, symbolic warning strike. This has happened in exactly this form in the past. Now the flying AUA employees are again invited to attend a staff meeting on Friday, March 8, 2024, which is organized by the employee representatives. It is to be expected that many flights will be canceled again. This is exactly what is really getting Vienna Airport Director Günther Ofner, in his role as aviation trade group chairman in the WKO, riled up: "The main purpose of a staff meeting is to inform about news. The Vida union should please explain to the 15.800 passengers affected by the new disruption what could have happened within a week that is so important that it has to inform the AUA employees and in doing so

Thursday: Verdi also calls on security personnel in Hamburg and Frankfurt to go on strike

In addition to the rail strike called by the GDL union from Thursday, March 7, 2024, and the strike by Lufthansa ground staff starting on the same day, Verdi is also calling on security staff at Hamburg and Frankfurt am Main airports to stop work. The three industrial action measures mean that people who want to travel to/from or within Germany must expect significant restrictions. In many cases, it will not be possible to switch to rail connections due to the train drivers' strike. Affected travelers should contact their airline or Deutsche Bahn to check alternative options or - if possible - postpone their travel plans.

Verdi calls on Lufthansa ground staff to go on strike again

The next negotiations are scheduled to take place on March 13 and 14, 2024. Verdi wants to increase the pressure on the employer beforehand.

Galapagos Islands double tourist tax to $200
