Austria: Good booking situation continues during the Easter holidays

"Across all federal states, bookings are generally good this Easter holiday. This confirms once again that our guests appreciate Austria's wide range of tourist offerings, from winter sports and wellness to art and culture and culinary delights - the mix of many holiday and leisure activities means that in these times of overlapping seasons, there is a suitable travel motive for everyone," says Tourism State Secretary Susanne Kraus-Winkler. A look at the mountain regions or at the city and country shows that bookings vary relatively widely from region to region. In the federal capital Vienna, bookings are good and at a stable level - the conference business has also started well. Burgenland, Styria, Upper Austria, Lower Austria, Carinthia, Tyrol and Vorarlberg are generally well booked at Easter. In general, it can be observed that the snow and slope conditions in higher ski areas are very good and these therefore have a very good booking situation - here, too, there is hope for further short-term bookings. The lower-lying ski areas tend to have less snow, although the slope conditions are still good in some areas. Here and there, however, guest bookings are still cautious - partly due to the mild weather - but skiers are currently often moving to higher-lying ski areas to be on the safe side. "Climate change will pose challenges in the medium to long term, especially in some lower-lying ski regions, when it comes to periods outside of the core winter seasons. In some regions, a 'hybrid' offer or flexibility is already being used: an offer that works not only on snow, but also on the 'green slopes'.

Because of oxygen cylinders: FAA imposes hefty fine on Spirit Airlines

The US Civil Aviation Authority intends to impose a fine of 146.500 US dollars on the low-cost airline Spirit Airlines. The FAA accuses the carrier of violating dangerous goods regulations. Specifically, it concerns the transport of oxygen cylinders on behalf of FedEx. In August 2022, a total of five cylinders are said to have been transported in the form of separate shipments within the USA. The corresponding offer for the service was made by Spirit Airlines employees. In any case, FedEx is said to have refused to accept one of the shipments at Detroit Airport because it was not only damaged, but also did not comply with the transport regulations of the US Department of Transportation. According to the FAA, appropriate stickers regarding flammability and the fact that oxygen can act as a real fire accelerant were also missing. The US Civil Aviation Authority also accuses the budget airline of not having the necessary additional training to handle dangerous goods, neither the employees who prepared the offers nor the employees involved in loading. The FAA has offered Spirit Airlines a civil fine of US$146.500. The company now has 30 days to pay or provide a statement. If it does not pay, an official procedure will be initiated. This could result in either an acquittal or a significantly higher penalty. The airline in question has not yet decided how it will proceed.

AUA: Ofner considers Vida’s wage demands to be “vastly excessive”

In his role as head of the aviation trade group in the Austrian Chamber of Commerce, Vienna Airport Director Günther Ofner is of the opinion that the strikes by AUA flying staff planned by the Vida union would not only be "vastly excessive" but even "a shot in the foot". In several rounds of negotiations, the employee representatives and Austrian Airlines, represented by the Chamber of Commerce, were unable to agree on a compromise. Now a strike by pilots and flight attendants is imminent. Ofner strongly criticises the plan, because he believes that demands of up to 40 percent more salary per month are "vastly excessive". AUA offered 18 percent, which is more than is usual in other industries, said the head of the trade group. In the media statement, Ofner also admits that Austrian Airlines has drastically increased ticket prices in recent years. In his opinion, higher wages would then have to be passed on in the form of higher prices, which would lead to a loss of customers. In his opinion, AUA employees would be “shooting themselves in the foot” and putting the 6.200 jobs at risk.

FAA places United Airlines under increased supervision

In recent weeks, United Airlines has hit the headlines due to numerous incidents that fortunately ended well. Now the US Civil Aviation Authority (FAA) has signaled that it is placing the Star Alliance member under increased supervision. This is a measure that the aviation authorities can take if they have certain concerns or if a number of incidents occur within a short period of time that should not have occurred. Just a few days ago, United's managing director went public and stressed that there were no safety problems whatsoever. The FAA obviously does not want to leave it at assurances, but prefers to keep a closer eye on the US airline. This is also having initial consequences for United Airlines, as the authority has declared that ongoing approval procedures can be continued, but no new ones can be opened because the company is under increased supervision. The FAA will only decide how to proceed in this regard once the current audit has been completed. A spokesperson for the agency said, among other things: "Due to recent safety incidents, the FAA is increasing its oversight of United Airlines to ensure that the company complies with safety regulations, identifies hazards and mitigates risks, and operates effective safety management." United Airlines employees were informed by the responsible manager on March 22, 2024, that they are under increased supervision by the FAA. For employees, this means that they must expect officials to be present at all times and to check work processes, manuals, aircraft, and infrastructure. United employees are asked to cooperate with FAA officials and comply with their orders or requests.
