Pakistan: Government wants to speed up PIA sale

The Pakistani government wants to speed up the sale of Pakistan International Airlines. This is not really being done voluntarily, however, as there is considerable pressure from the International Monetary Fund. Within a few hours, the new government got the plan for gradual privatization through the committees. There are also expected to be changes in the board of directors of the state-owned company. Background: Pakistan has received loans from the IMF. The terms of the contract also include the privatization of PIA. Now things are in a particular hurry, as the last tranche of the three billion US dollar loan is due to be paid out in April 2024. They obviously do not want to jeopardize this.

Ancona: Skyalps receives provisional PSO award

The regional airline Skyalps has been provisionally awarded the contract to operate three domestic routes from Ancona. Aeroitalia had previously withdrawn and terminated the contract with the public sector. From April 1, 2024, Skyalps will operate de Havilland Dash 8-400 flights from Ancona to Rome-Fiumicino, Naples and Milan-Linate. There will be daily flights to the capital, twice a week to Naples and 12 times a week to Linate. This is a kind of provisional emergency award, as the selection process for the corresponding tender is currently underway. The contract has therefore been temporarily awarded to Skyalps until May 15, 2024. According to reports, the interest of other providers is very limited, which is why it is expected that Skyalps will prevail. Aeroitalia has discontinued both the subsidized and the commercial routes from Ancona. Only a few flights were made to Vienna before they had to be stopped due to a lack of demand. From Ancona, mainly ATR72-600s from the Romanian subsidiary Air Connect were used.

New Pacific Airlines only wants to fly charter and wet lease

The US airline New Pacific Airlines is ending its scheduled flights and will only operate as a charter and ACMI provider in the future. The company only started last year. It announced long-haul destinations that would be served with Boeing 757s. So far, however, it has only started a few domestic routes. This will soon come to an end, as these are to be abandoned. This means that the original business model as a low-cost carrier has been abandoned, as New Pacific Airlines only wants to provide wet lease and charter services in the future.

He will submit a recommendation by April 7, 2024, but this is non-binding for both sides. Günther Ofner severely criticizes the AUA strike

Günther Ofner, chairman of the Austrian Airlines Aviation Trade Group at the Austrian Chamber of Commerce, has been fiercely critical of the strike that the Vida union is calling on its members who fly for Austrian Airlines to take. He even believes that the future of the Lufthansa subsidiary is in danger. "Negotiating means that the social partners approach each other in order to find a viable compromise. This time, however, the AUA on-board works council and the Vida union have only made impossible maximum demands, which they insisted on at all costs, regardless of the damage," said Günther Ofner, chairman of the Austrian Chamber of Commerce Aviation Trade Group, describing the union's blockade as "reckless action with serious consequences for thousands of passengers." He also added: "No one who bears responsibility for the future of AUA can meet the demand for a 40 percent salary increase, because that would be aiding and abetting AUA's economic suicide and would endanger thousands of jobs in the entire service chain of Austrian air traffic. "50.000 frustrated and angry passengers, including many families with school-age children who cannot go on their vacation as planned or are stuck abroad, and more than 15 million euros in economic damage to AUA - at the airport and to the service providers affected - are the dramatic consequences of this irresponsible action. I wonder where Vida's social, societal and economic responsibility has gone."
