Route permit withdrawn: Pegasus has to stop Istanbul-Podgorica

Arrested in Arlanda: Pensioner wanted to smuggle a large amount of gold

On Sunday, April 14, 2024, a man around 60 years old was caught at Stockholm-Arlanda Airport with gold bars with a total value of 1,7 million Swedish kronor (around 146.454 euros). According to official information, Swedish customs carried out a routine check and found the considerable amount of gold. According to the authorities, the man did not use the red channel, but the green channel, contrary to the regulations. Since he could not provide conclusive evidence of the origin during the check, the public prosecutor's office was consulted. The prosecutor ordered the provisional arrest and initiated an investigation on suspicion of serious money laundering. It is not generally forbidden to import gold in such large quantities, but travelers must comply with the law. In concrete terms, this means that the red channel must be used and it must be officially declared to customs officials there. Depending on the value, duties may have to be paid. In any case, proof of origin must be provided for amounts over 10.000 euros. If the suspicion of money laundering turns out to be true, it should be clear why the suspected perpetrator had no proof of the origin. If travelers are "caught" using the green channel, not only will they be subject to surcharges, but depending on the severity of the offense, they may face criminal proceedings, which can sometimes even result in a prison sentence.
